A Cultural Treasure

The baton is now in your hands. It is up to you to secure the future of the San Diego Symphony for the next 100 years and for generations to come! Jahja Ling, Music Director

Only in the west, and only in this city, could there be a musical entity like our San Diego Symphony one that can hold the creative tension of being simultaneously in the vanguard of classical and popular music. We are not looking over our shoulder at anyone. Musically, artistically, the organization is thriving. Everything we ve dared to imagine over the last decade is coming to fruition. For this, I am grateful to so many. The history of the Symphony has been written by its music directors, musicians, staff, and notably, its patrons. Without the passionate dedication and generosity of our patrons, the San Diego Symphony could not hope to exert the growing influence it has achieved over the musical life of our great city and the world. Jahja Ling, Music Director We have one of the finest orchestras in the world. We present the world s greatest music, from the world s great composers, performed by some of the world s finest musicians. In 2009 the San Diego Symphony was designated a Tier One Orchestra. Now our challenge is to secure the financial resources necessary for maintaining our current momentum in a sustained and meaningful way. The Board recognizes the need for securing capital and endowment funding. We are asking the Symphony s loyal patrons to help us by playing a leadership role in this effort. Edward B. Gill, Executive Director

Through a rich mixture of innovative and educational programming designed to appeal to all ages and cultures, the Symphony makes music an integral part of the cultural fabric of the San Diego region. The Symphony performs a variety of concerts including classical and pops concerts as well as family concerts designed for young children and their families. The Symphony has been a cornerstone of the San Diego arts community over the last century; it is truly a cultural treasure. Our goal is to make certain this tradition continues for the next 100 years. The San Diego Symphony performed its first concert on December 6, 1910 and has since been committed to bringing quality music to the community. Under the dynamic leadership of Maestro Jahja Ling, the orchestra s Music Director, a new era of artistic excellence and achievement at the Symphony is underway. The Symphony performs nearly 100 concerts each year. Since taking the baton in 2004, Maestro Ling has elevated the Symphony s artistic profile by attracting world class musicians to San Diego, including talented musicians in the orchestra and revered guest artists. Now Maestro Ling passes the baton to you in the hope that you will help him, and the entire organization, position the Symphony for another century of outstanding symphonic music.

The presence of a world-class symphony infuses any community and its citizens with a vitality and energy that is unique and irreplaceable, and San Diego is fortunate to have just such an institution in the San Diego Symphony. Education and outreach are critical components of the San Diego Symphony s public profile, particularly to under-served communities and schools. With artistic expression, our greatest resource, leading the way, the San Diego Symphony s education and outreach programs invite people of all ages to explore the world of music. Through the Symphony s education programs, people gain a deeper understanding of the problems and triumphs of human beings in society in the context of music. Sustaining the San Diego Symphony s high level of quality and excellence requires resources, and to be a great institution the San Diego Symphony needs an enduring and strong financial base, now and in the future. Therefore, to achieve this long-term security, the Board of Directors has launched the San Diego Symphony Centennial Campaign. Its goal is to raise the funds required to adequately maintain the beautiful and historic Copley Symphony Hall, and to build an Endowment Fund sufficient to support the San Diego Symphony s outstanding performances, education programs, and operations.

The Centennial Campaign Since we moved to San Diego in 1966, Joan and I have attended and greatly enjoyed performances by the San Diego Symphony, first in the Civic Theater and now in the beautiful Copley Symphony Hall with its wonderful acoustics. Under Maestro Jahja Ling, the San Diego Symphony has become a truly outstanding ensemble, performing at a level comparable with the best that we encounter when visiting other parts of the world. We are pleased that we have been able to support such notable progress in the orchestra s first 100 years and look forward to enjoying both classical music and pops at a very high level as the San Diego Symphony enters its second century. We are also proud of the musicians and staff for all of the support they provide to many cultural and educational activities around San Diego, most notably the San Diego Opera and the San Diego schools. Please join us in ensuring the financial health of an organization that brings so much beauty to our lives. Joan and Irwin Jacobs

We invite you to take a leadership role in support of the San Diego Symphony s Centennial Campaign and help us secure the future of this magnificent gift, the San Diego Symphony. Joyce Grosvenor and Warren Kessler Campaign Co-Chairs This is your orchestra. With your help we can achieve our common goal, but first you must take up the baton and lead the way. A strong endowment is not a luxury, it is a necessity. A strong endowment will provide us with stability. It will enable us to recruit and retain top talent, educate children, perform the best and widest variety of music yearround, serve the broadest public, expand our pool of patrons and audience, tour the Orchestra, and sustain the kind of vision and character that has made us a leader in the arts community distinctive, confident, popular, and strong.

Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without. Confucius, Ancient Chinese Philosopher, 551 BC-479 BC Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. Plato, Ancient Greek Philosopher, 428 BC-347 BC Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife. Kahlil Gibran, Lebanese-American Poet, 1883-1931 To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable. Aaron Copland, American Composer, 1900-1990

Under the leadership of Honorary Campaign Co-Chairs Joan and Irwin Jacobs and Campaign Co-Chairs Joyce Grosvenor and Warren Kessler, generous gifts have launched the Centennial Campaign. Through these gifts, the community is now challenged to support the Symphony and its varied programs, allowing it to provide the people of San Diego and visitors to the area with the finest in musical expression. We are all holding the baton, because the future of music for the next generation and generations to come is in our hands.

Since 1984, the San Diego Symphony has been fortunate to call historic Copley Symphony Hall its home. The Hall was built in 1929 as a premiere movie house, then named the Fox Theatre. When it opened on November 8, 1929, 100,000 people watched the grand parade from Broadway to the Fox Theatre (at the time, San Diego s population was only 147,000). In addition to these record numbers, a trainload of Hollywood personalities came down to San Diego to join the festivities. Walt Disney premiered many of his movies here. Since being converted to a concert hall in 1985, the former Fox Theatre has been regarded as one of the finest classical music venues on the West Coast. Having a great performance hall is crucial to the artistic growth of a great orchestra. Over the years, Copley Symphony Hall has been well used and is now in need of renovations to modernize its infrastructure and to restore it to its original splendor. The Centennial Campaign will ensure that it remains an ideal performance venue for a Tier One Orchestra.

There are many giving opportunities available opportunities for you to name a musician s chair or a space in Copley Symphony Hall. You can help us by following the conductor s lead, just as the musicians do each time they take the stage, but this time YOU will be the ones making the music.
