Youth Orchestra Los Angeles
OUR MISSION Through Gustavo Dudamel s Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) program inspired by Venezuela s revolutionary El Sistema the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. Gustavo Dudamel rehearses with YOLA at EXPO It has been a dream to see YOLA grow and to watch how these students have changed on an artistic level, and also as citizens. Gustavo Dudamel, Music Director, Los Angeles Philharmonic YOLA at HOLA performs at Walt Disney Concert Hall
WHAT IS YOLA? Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) provides students ages 6-18 a strong musical and social foundation through participation in hours of programming each week. With sites in South L.A. (YOLA at EXPO), the Rampart District (YOLA at HOLA), and East L.A. (YOLA at LACHSA), YOLA engages students from more than 200 schools in L.A. County. Intensive music study is complemented by academic support, leadership opportunities, parent workshops, and performances - both in the community and in world-class venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. YOLA students perform side-by-side with the LA Phil The interdependence of the LA Phil s artistic and social imperatives find expression in YOLA, which is altering the course of young lives through the power of music. Deborah Borda, President & CEO, Los Angeles Philharmonic YOLA at HOLA Paper Orchestra YOLA students join the LA Phil tour to London

YOLA at HOLA is located in the Rampart District, one of L.A. s most densely populated and diverse neighborhoods. Founded in 2010, the program engages over 200 students ages Performance in Lafayette Park YOLA has shaped me to be a better leader and role model, and made me realize that I could be part of something greater in life. Raymond, age 14 YOLA at HOLA is a partnership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA).
Located east of downtown L.A., YOLA at LACHSA engages over 100 students ages High School students at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts act as mentors to their younger YOLA counterparts. YOLA at LACHSA s first day January 11, 2014 An orchestra is a community where the essential and exclusive feature is that it is the only community that comes together with the fundamental objective of agreeing with itself. José Antonio Abreu, Founder, El Sistema YOLA at LACHSA is a partnership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA).
6TH STREET YOLA neighborhood project Building Communities through Music WILSHIRE BOULEVARD HOLA RAMPART BOULEVARD With the YOLA sites at its core, the YOLA Neighborhood Project brings music into the lives of over 15,000 community members by creating concentrated networks of musical activity in South Los Angeles, the Rampart District, and East Los Angeles. Thousands of school children experience music through in-class residencies, field trips to Walt Disney Concert Hall and free concerts performed by LA Phil musicians in their schools, churches, and community centers. Thank you for changing our lives. We think differently now; we act differently. As a result, we want to do more things for our community and for Elementary school parent LACHSA 710 FREEWAY 10 FREEWAY
take a STAND Supporting Social Change Through Music A global movement of advocates for music and social change requires new forms of training and avenues for collaboration. Take a Stand, an innovative partnership of the LA Phil, Bard College and the Longy School of Music of Bard College provides pathways for professional development through international symposia, regional workshops and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Music Degree Program, situated in L.A. on the campus of YOLA at HOLA. Take a Stand will provide a platform of regular conferences and workshops for pioneering classical music educators and will develop a pool of artistically accomplished, socially conscious music Los Angeles Times teachers. Investing in L.A.: LA Phil IN THE community The LA Phil s education and community initiatives provide many points of access through which children, families, and concertgoers can engage in the appreciation and creation of music. Serving over 150,000 people from across Los Angeles socioeconomic spectrum, programs include specially designed concerts for families at Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, concerts in community settings, in-school residencies, after-school intensive orchestra instruction through YOLA, intensive training for high school composers, ways for L.A.-area youth orchestras to connect to the LA Phil, and pre- and post- concert talks. All of these programs are free or low-cost. LAPhil.com/Education
