4 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Dottie Hughes October 23, or THE LITTLE THEATRE LOOKS FORWARD TO THE NEXT FIFTY YEARS Things are looking up at the Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach as it embarks on its million dollar+ plan to expand and renovate its fifty-year-old building. Founded in 1947, the theater group moved to its current location when the building was built on land donated to the Little Theatre by Hannah D. Bonnet, former Mayor of New Smyrna Beach. At that time members and residents worked together to raise money to build the little red barn at 726 Third Avenue on the beachside. Today the volunteer run, not-for-profit community theater is in great need of more room to expand its programs and meet the needs of our growing community. Funded in part by a Volusia County ECHO matching grant award of $467,000 which includes cultural projects, the Little Theatre has already met the match, but seeks an additional $250,000 to complete the project. To accomplish this goal, a major fund raising campaign is being conducted. RKC Construction, Inc. of Orlando, FL is the general contractor for the project and in support of the theater is waiving its fee. Construction will begin after the completion of the season and a grand re-opening is planned for January With the addition of a second level and a new wing to the east of the existing building, the facility will increase its square footage from approximately 7,500 to 11, 800. The enlarged facility will allow a full-time children s theater program with after school fall and spring classes as well as summer camps and children s productions. With the budget cuts for arts in the schools, the theater will help bring the performing arts to the children of the community, says Dottie Hughes, President. Increased overhead fly space and wing space will allow the production of plays which cannot be staged in the present facility. A new rehearsal hall and conference room upstairs will provide room for rehearsals, classrooms for theater education programs for all ages, and future black box theater productions. The facility will be handicapped accessible both upstairs and down with additional wheelchair seating for patrons and handicapped restrooms on both levels. The existing first level will be completely renovated with a new wing added to the east side at the rear of the property which will have a scene shop downstairs and a rehearsal hall on the second level. The rear west wing will contain a scene shop downstairs and a costume room and a prop storage area upstairs. The lobby will house the box office and expanded rest room facilities. Stairs and an
5 elevator from the lobby will access the second level where an office, conference room, and the lights and sound booth will be located. On the second level a gallery hall with local artists work will lead to the sound proof rehearsal hall at the rear of the building. The Little Theatre is seeking support from members of the community by attending plays, supporting fund raising events, financial contributions, or donation of construction expertise and materials. Two fund raising events are planned at the Little Theatre for November. A Jazzy Affair: An Evening with the Harold Blanchard Trio will be Sat., Nov. 8 starting at 6:30 p.m. with hors d oeuvres, drinks, and a silent auction, followed by the unique jazz style of the Harold Blanchard Trio at 8 p.m. Bill Cook with MC the event. Tickets are $30 and available at the Little Theatre box office, Mon-Fri. from 1-4 pm or call for information. Premiere Model Management presents Glitz N Glamour, a pre-holiday extravaganza, on Sun. Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. to benefit the Little Theatre. Chris Harris, owner of Premiere, will be the MC and the program features children and adult models displaying fashions as well as talent as they dance and sing to Holiday music. Tickets are $15 which includes dessert, coffee, and punch. Call or stop by the Little Theatre or contact Premiere Model Management at For further information on the above events, call or visit
6 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Dottie Hughes May 8, or LITTLE THEATRE TO BEGIN RENOVATIONS Long awaited renovations and additions to the Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach s 50-year-old facility are scheduled to begin in July with a grand reopening planned for January Due to budget constraints, it has been necessary to scale back the original plan from a two-story building to single story. RKC Construction, Inc. of Orlando is the general contractor for the project and in support of the Little Theatre has waived its fee. Today the volunteer run, not-for-profit community theater needs more room to expand its programs and meet the needs of our growing community. In the spring of 2003 the Little Theatre was awarded a $467,000 matching grant by the Volusia County ECHO program. This program, funded by the taxpayers, provides financial aid for bricks and mortar projects that showcase Environmental, Cultural, Heritage, and Outdoor assets countywide. Preliminary cost estimates were approximately $800,000 and with a building fund of $233,500, the ECHO grant, and cash flows from the current season it was believed that would cover the project. During the summer and fall of 2003 construction drawings were completed and the project was put out for bid. However, due to more extensive retrofitting requirements of the existing structure to meet current building codes, the bids came back significantly higher that expected. The project team then looked at ways to scale back the project. Since current building code allows the existing auditorium walls and rear stage wall to remain untouched if the remodeling does not go higher than the existing structure, it was decided the building could remain one story in order to cut costs. Without two stories, a substantial amount can be saved by not installing an elevator. With this in mind, a proposed design change was submitted to the Volusia County ECHO staff for a single story project. ECHO approved that change in April The single story project for this summer will become Phase One of a multi-phase remodeling project spanning a number of years. Scaling back to Phase One allows the Little Theatre to keep the ECHO grant and get many needed improvements while it is necessary to postpone others. Bill Roehrborn, project coordinator, said, The biggest disappointments are no fly space over the stage and no dedicated scene shop for tech work. Also, there will be no office space or meeting room above the lobby. Phase Two is designed to
7 address these problems. On the plus side, we will have a rehearsal hall/children s theatre classroom as well as wing space for the stage. The lobby will be updated with new and expanded bathroom facilities. Our actors will enjoy new dressing rooms, make up room, and green room. There will be small prop storage and costume storage above the rehearsal hall. All new walls and footings will be sized for eventual upgrade to the original two-story project. In the next phase the rear wall of the stage and the two side walls of the auditorium will be upgraded to the current code. As funds are raised, the following will be added: stage roof raised to provide for a fly loft, the roof raised to provide for a higher proscenium and better lighting angles, and a second story added to the lobby with upstairs light booth, meeting rooms and office, and a black box theatre over the dressing rooms at the rear of the building. Financial help from the community is still needed. A gift to the Little Theatre Building Fund is tax deductible and 100% goes directly into the fund; there are no overhead or administrative costs. For further information call or visit The season will begin in January 2005 with Chapter Two, a comedy by Neil Simon scheduled for January 14-23; the musical Meshuggah-Nuns! By Dan Goggin February 18-March 6; a Michael Perker farce, Whose in Bed With The Butler? April 1-10; and The Sugar Bean Sisters, a comedy by Nathan Sanders May Season tickets are $47 for all four plays. For information, contact the Little Theatre.
