Investing in the College of Human Resources and Education

The College of Human Resources & Education: A State of Minds EDU: short for education, those three letters cap web addresses for the vast majority of schools, setting them apart by their calling. We take those letters and that calling to heart at the WVU College of Human Resources & Education (HRE). We are EDU at WVU. We educate students for careers in human development, supervision, teaching, and research. We drive the conversation for education reform in the state. And we utilize resources to advance education in a rapidly changing society. Our 30,000 alumni work throughout West Virginia and around the country as teachers, guidance counselors, principals, and superintendents as well as reading, special education, hearing, and speech specialists. Our graduates are prominent leaders at all levels of local, state, and national education. Every resident in West Virginia has been, or will be, touched by an HRE graduate. We are the building block of education the place that shapes this State of Minds. We recognize that revolutionary changes in technology and significant social, political, and environmental issues dramatically affect how today s students learn and what they must know. Together, with your help, HRE will rise to the challenge of preparing professionals to educate today s students to become tomorrow s successful global citizens. 1

Priorities for Tomorrow The best way to educate K 12 students is to prepare smart, driven, and exceptional teachers and allied professionals the type needed to effect change. This is the vision at the College of Human Resources & Education. Through this campaign, we ask you, alumni and friends who believe in this vision, to invest in the following priorities. across the nation, for graduates with advanced degrees, and so we look particularly to increase support for our master s and doctoral programs. You can be a part of advancing this goal by creating a named scholarship endowment with a gift of $25,000 or more. An endowment can be accomplished by making a one-time gift, pledges, and planned gifts. 5 Scholarship Support We are committed to educating leaders of character: those who will build not only great schools but also responsible citizens. As part of a flagship, land-grant university, HRE provides academic programs that are affordable, accessible, and nationally recognized for quality. Through the campaign, we seek scholarship funds to help recruit and retain promising students. We recognize the growing need, in the state and Investment Total: $700,000 Research and Program Support At HRE, we take seriously our role in driving the educational agenda and shaping the policy conversation. Home to a number of cuttingedge programs, we seek partners to strengthen their important work and dramatically improve students lives. Your campaign gift can establish an endowment to support initiatives including educational leadership, early childhood learning, reading intervention studies, speech and audiology, school counseling and guidance, the Program Evaluation Research Center (PERC), or STEM education, to name a few. You can also choose to invest in a research endowment that would give students the opportunity to conduct research and travel to conferences to present it, simultaneously

6 increasing their scholarship and raising the profile of HRE. In addition, you can choose to support funding for internships, field experiences, guest lecturers, and outreach projects across the college. Investment Total: $1.2 Million New Schoolhouse To train the next generation of leaders, teachers, and allied professionals, HRE needs more capacity and more space. Plans on the drawing board call for an addition to the front of Allen Hall that would provide much-needed additional square footage and technology upgrades. The new space would include a home room for students, where they could meet, study, and collaborate on projects. Guidance counseling would gain its own space; specific graduate studies classrooms and seminar rooms would provide the technology necessary for distance-learning. Technology upgrades would include a wireless network throughout the building in addition to computer labs with the latest educational technology. In addition, a renovated Allen Hall will feature a comprehensive and accessible clinical setting for reading, audiology, interventions, speech, and educational research (RAISE). The counseling programs will also benefit from dedicated space for observation and research labs, while STEM graduate programs will benefit from a new laboratory. The Allen Hall addition and renovation offers many opportunities for naming spaces, which can also be part of an endowment to support research, scholarships, or programs. Investment Total: $5 Million

With your help, we can attract high caliber scholars and students to generate the knowledge and innovation that will serve the future needs of education, human services, and society in West Virginia, the nation, and the world. Dr. Lynne Schrum, Dean

A State of Minds: Creating Thought Leaders for Tomorrow 8 Education is the foundation that has always supported a brighter future for West Virginia, America, and the world. If we want to prepare students who are ready to contribute to the state and nation s economic development, we must ensure they are well educated. At the WVU College of Human Resources & Education, we make this happen daily by developing programs that impact West Virginia, by preparing students for their lives as teachers and clinicians, and by doing these things within an innovative, 21st century environment. We do this by helping individuals who are ready to make a significant impact on the health and education of others. As educators, we have a commitment to life-long learning. As graduates and friends of our programs, it s our responsibility to extend a hand and help support the next generation in achieving their goals. This campaign is an opportunity for us to do just that: with your help, we can attract high caliber scholars and students to generate the knowledge and innovation that will serve the future needs of education, human services, and society in West Virginia, the nation, and the world. HRE programs and faculty change the lives of our students and people in West Virginia and beyond. Our students learn by teaching in area schools; our clinics provide direct services to families. In addition, our students will then be ready to impact children and families for decades to come. I ask you to join me in supporting A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia s University by making a gift to HRE. In the end, education is a community enterprise and a partnership. Our promise lies in the transformative power of education; fulfilling that promise depends on you. Lynne Schrum, Ph.D. Dean
