Guide to Norwegian Ports NORWEGIAN GOVERNMENT SEAMEN S SERVICE

How to use the guide This guide is intended to give seafarers useful information on facilities in ports. The guide is divided into main port areas, while smaller ports are described under the port area where they belong. When you know the name of the port or the dock your ship is calling at, please check the index on the last pages of the guide. The guide does not give a complete survey of the area you are visiting. The intention is to give you some basic information, and tell you where to pick up more detailed knowledge about what s on. Calling your home country: Telephone charges in Norway are among the cheapest in the world. When calling to a foreign country dial 00 and then the country code and the telephone number. Public telephone boxes accept 1, 5, 10, 20 kroner coins, or telephone cards that can be purchased locally. You have to pay a small fee. Norwegian Maritime Authority Please note that in this booklet the Norwegian Maritime Authority is abbreviated to NMA. Office hours Banks: Most banks open at 09.00 am and close at 3.30 pm, Monday - Friday. Closed Saturday. Thursday is normally late closing day. During the summer, from 15 May to 15 September, the opening hours are normally from 09.00 or 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. All banks operate a cash dispenser (ATM) where it is possible to withdraw cash using your credit-card. Shops Opening hours for shops vary a lot. Small shops may close as early as 4 pm, while department stores may close as late as 6 or 8 pm. Saturdays: The usual closing time is 3 pm or 6 pm (dept. stores). Oslo Oslo county Oslo is the capital of Norway, and has approx. 605,000 inhabitants. It is situated at the end of the 100 km long Oslo fjord and the city was founded in 1048. Halden Østfold county The city of Halden is situated 116 km southeast of Oslo, and has approx. 29,300 inhabitants. The port was built up around the export of timber in the 16th century. Halden has played an important part in the defence of Norway. The city has burnt down four times since the 16th century, but due to large trade and shipping industries it was quickly rebuilt. It covers an area of trade with approx. 53,000 inhabitants, and is situated 91 km southeast of Oslo. The sawmill industry has been the corner stone of Sarpsborg. Railway: Sarpsborg station. Fredrikstad Østfold county Fredrikstad is situated 91 km southeast of Oslo at the outlet of the river Glomma. The city has approx. 74,800 inhabitants. After its foundation in 1567 it has been burnt down and rebuilt several times. The main industry was originally related to the timber trade and agriculture. Drammen was the most important timber port in Norway as early as the beginning of the 16th century. Today the port is dominated by big auto liners and reefers. The main port is situated at the outlet of the Drammen river, close to the city centre.
