This will later be trimmed to an 18 square. 2. Fold the fabric in half and mark the fold line with a Chaco Liner. Repeat to create the opposite fold line. 3. Position the four Peacock Templates on the chalk lines and pin. The feet of the opposite peacocks should be approximately 5 ½ apart from each other. (See the sewn sample for placement.) 4. Hoop the tear away stabilizer along with the blue fabric, centering one template in the hoop at a time. 5. With the embroidery machine on, retrieve the Peacock design. Position the needle over the center cross hair mark on the template. Embroider the design. Repeat for the other three peacock templates. 6. Pin four Flower Templates to each of the four corners, being careful to center evenly in each corner between the two peacocks. 7. Hoop the tear away stabilizer and spray with temporary spray adhesive. Center one of the flower placed templates in the hoop. Finger press to smooth the templated fabric in the hoop. {Designer s Gallery Project} Jacobean Birds Wall Hanging Page 4
8. Retrieve the Flower design and center the needle over the cross marks on the template. Embroider the design. Repeat for the other three corner flowers. Save these templates for later use. 9. Merge two of the flower designs onto the embroidery screen and position the designs to fit in the center between the four Peacock designs. Option: If you merge two Flower designs onto another page in CustomWorks, you can then print a template to help with the placement of the design. Embroider the designs. 10. Trim the center embroidered section to an 18 square, being careful that the designs are centered. 11. Cut two, 3 strips from the first lavender print from the width of the fabric. From these strips, cut two 18 pieces. Pin these pieces to each side and sew in place using a ¼ seam allowance. 12. Pin the remaining strips to the top and bottom of the center section. Trim the edges to maintain a square. 13. Cut three, 3 wide strips from the second lavender fabric. 14. Pin the strip to the side edge and stitch using a ¼ seam allowance. Trim the end and repeat for the opposite side. 15. Attach the top and bottom sash in the same manner using the second lavender fabric. {Designer s Gallery Project} Jacobean Birds Wall Hanging Page 5
16. Pin the flower templates onto the sashing sections, centering from top to bottom and from left to right. (See the illustration below for placement.) 17. Hoop the stabilizer and spray with a temporary spray adhesive. Place the templated fabric in the center of the hoop, being careful that the cross marks line up with the side markings on the hoop. Reposition the design as needed on the embroidery screen for perfect placement and rotation. Embroider the design. Repeat for the other three flower designs. 18. Place the Corner Flower Templates on each of the four corners just outside the center section. (See the illustration above for placement.) 19. Repeat for the other three Corner Flower designs. 20. For the backing of the quilt, cut a piece from the second fabric 3 wider than the front of the quilt. Place it right side down on a flat surface. Cut a {Designer s Gallery Project} Jacobean Birds Wall Hanging Page 6
section of batting the same size as the backing fabric. Place the embroidered section on top of the batting. Tip: Between the layers, spray with a temporary spray adhesive to hold the layers together. 21. Quilt the layers together using a stippling stitch. 22. From the first lavender fabric, cut 2 ½ wide bias strips by the length of the outer edge of the wall hanging. Piece the sections together using a 45 angle. With wrong sides together, fold the binding strip in half along the length and press. Starting in the middle of one side, leave a 6 tail of binding loose &, align the raw edges of the binding with the edge of the quilt top. Begin sewing the binding to the quilt using a ¼ seam allowance. Stop ¼ from the first corner. Remove the needle from the quilt and cut the threads. 23. Fold the corner upward and then back down, even with the edge of the quilt. Begin sewing ¼ from the edge. Repeat for all corners. 24. Fold the binding to the back of the quilt and blindstitch the binding to the back.
