4 Advent 2013 Fabric Banner instructions These instructions will help worship planners create a banner from fabrics and other materials available at fabric stores. There are three banner/artwork designs provided for the season: the first is a colorful and simple wordless design representative of the mystery of God s dwelling, the second features the same image, but with the inclusion of the theme statement; the third option is meant as a complement to the first design for those congregations who choose to make two banners to hang opposite one another in the worship space. Banner #1 Banner #2 Banner #3 The banner technique described in these instructions is quite versatile, especially in terms of fabrics selected. You can choose simple solid cottons, printed quilt fabrics, even elegant bridal fabrics (artist s preference). The designs can be used for construction in felt fabrics, or even paper with paint for simplicity and cost considerations. NOTE: The following instructions detail the creation of banner #2 which features the full visual with text. If you are making banner #1 or #3 please modify by skipping any steps that do not apply to the design you are working from. To make a 44 x 88 banner, you will need: Projector Tape measure Large sheets of paper/newsprint for patterns Masking or scotch tape Fabrics all wide: o 2 ½ yards black/dark gray/deep plum fabric for background (7.5) o 4 shades of purple/blue fabric letter A being the darkest shade, D the lightest (these are indicated on the pattern for Banner #1, and apply to all three designs): A ¼ yard center of heaven burst at top of banner (.5)

5 B 2 ¼ yards (if you piece together: 1 ¼ yards) for 2 nd ring of heaven burst, 3 long rays, mosaic squares for on golden rays (6) C ½ yard for 3 rd ring of heaven burst (1) D 2/3 yard 4 th ring of heaven burst and dove background (1.5) o 3/4 yard burgundy fabric large circle behind dove and mosaic squares on purple rays (1.5) o 1/2 yard deep pink fabric small circle behind dove (1) o 1 ½ yards pale yellow fabric heaven burst rays, dove rays and mosaic squares on heaven burst and on purple rays (3.5) o ¼ yard orange fabric mosaic squares on purple rays and on gold dove rays (.5) o ½ yard white fabric (dove only) (.75) o 1 ¼ yards white fabric (lettering only) (2.75) o 2 ½ yards canvas fabric (7.5) 25 yards 17 wide ultra-hold iron-on adhesive (like Heat-Bond) Note: The numbers in parentheses following each fabric indicate the amount of iron-on adhesive needed for that color of fabric 7 yards ½ wide double fold bias tape purple or black for finishing the outside edges of the banner Fabric glue Scissors and stick pins Fabric pen or pencil Sewing machine Black thread Rotary cutter with mat and yardstick Mini-iron (used for appliqué work - handy for ironing down mosaic tile pieces) Iron and large ironing surface such as a table layered with blankets 45 + dowel or curtain rod for hanging banner Decorative cording or fish line for attaching to dowel/rod for hanging 1. Utilizing the Advent Banner Pattern PDF, set up the projector with the image of the pattern you need. Using the tape measure, position the projector so that the size of the projected banner equals 44 x 88 against a large empty wall. 2. Now tape large pieces of paper to the wall to make patterns of the large background shapes using the projected image. (You may need to piece some sheets of paper together for the largest shapes). Make patterns for: One A shape (this appears as three pieces, but is one piece) One B1 shape (this appears as four pieces, but is one piece) Three long B2 shapes One 2 x 22 B purple/blue rectangle for mosaic tiles One C shape (this appears as three pieces, but is one piece) One D shape (this appears as two pieces, but is one piece) One D dove shape (one solid shape for dove base) One large burgundy circle (not a ring) One 2 x 27 burgundy rectangle for mosaic tiles One smaller deep pink circle One 4 ½ x 44 rectangle for the orange fabric for mosaic tiles

6 Eight small pale yellow rays (these appear broken up by the overlapping shapes they all emerge from the center of the deep pink circle) Three pale yellow rays emerging from the top of design One pale yellow rectangle 8 x 44 for mosaic tiles Three white dove pieces (will overlay pale purple outline shape) NOTE: You do not need to make a pattern for the black background fabric.) If you are using a design with text, letters will be traced/cut later - leave the projector set up. Now set the patterns aside. 3. Cut the canvas fabric into a rectangle 44 x 88. This will serve as a backing and will give the banner weight and body. Now cut enough iron-on adhesive to completely cover the canvas and iron it on according to the adhesive s instructions and remove the paper backing. 4. Cut the black fabric into a rectangle 44 x 88 and lay it on top of the adhesive covered canvas. Iron it onto the canvas, again according to the adhesive s instructions. 5. At this point you will need to determine how your banner will be hung/displayed. To make a simple top rod pocket, fold the top edge of the banner over 2 ½ (this dimension should accommodate the rod or dowel you plan to use for hanging) and sew a pocket for the dowel/rod using the black thread. This will not be easy stitching as you are going through many layers of fabric. Use a needle for denim or heavy-weight fabrics and take it slow, or do it by hand with a thimble. 6. Lay each pattern piece onto its respective fabric. Cut enough iron-on adhesive to cover each fabric s pattern or patterns and iron it onto the fabrics. Do not remove the paper backing. Now pin each pattern onto its fabric with adhesive and carefully cut out. 7. Remove the pins, pattern, and the paper backing from each piece and assemble them on the black background. Using care not to move the pieces, iron them onto the background. 8. To create the mosaic look, you will now cut squares from the following fabrics: B purple/blue four ½ rows, 22 long, cut into ½ squares burgundy five 3/8 rows, 27 long, cut into 3/8 squares orange ten ¼ rows, 44 long, cut into ¼ squares pale yellow one 1 row, 24 long, cut into 1 squares pale yellow six ½ rows, 44 long, cut into ½ squares pale yellow nine 3/8 rows, 44 long, cut into 3/8 squares pale yellow one ¼ row, 24 long, cut into ¼ squares Working closely off the banner image, use the fabric pens to mark out lines on which to lay the various colors of mosaic tiles. Lay down 3-4 tiles spacing them as far apart as they are wide along a line, and iron in place using the mini-iron. Continue with another 3-4 tiles along the same line, and so on. 9. Cut enough iron-on adhesive to cover the white fabric indicated for the lettering/text and iron it on (Do not remove the paper backing). Tape the fabrics up on the wall. Using the overhead projector and the fabric pen or pencil, trace each letter from the banner s design onto its respective fabric. 10. Cut out each letter and remove the paper backing. Carefully position the letters on the banner. Using a ruler or straight edge to align the bottom of the letters in each row is helpful. You can also take measurements from the image projected by the overhead to know how far apart or how far from an edge the letters should be positioned. Using care not to move the letters, iron them onto the banner. 11. Using fabric glue, edge the sides and bottom of the banner with the bias tape. The bias tape should sandwich the banner s edge and give a clean finished look.
