CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 1. Start ECView Pro 3. Wait for the ECView Pro platform to launch and the client window to display. Figure 12: Client Running 24

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 2. Set the SNMP Profile 2. SET THE SNMP PROFILE The ECView Pro Discovery engine can retrieve data from devices using SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, or SNMPv3. Access to devices using SNMP v1 and v2c is controlled by community strings. SNMPv3 access uses username/password authentication, along with an encryption key. The SNMP Read-only community string is like a user ID or password that gives an access on the statistics of a switch, router or other managed device. ECView Pro sends the community string along with all SNMP requests. If the community string is correct, the device responds with the requested information. If the community string is incorrect, the device simply discards the request and does not respond. The ECView Pro default community strings are public for read-only access, and private for read/write access. If network device community strings are not the same as the ECView Pro defaults, you must modify the device settings, or add a new SNMPv1/v2c profile. The same also applies for SNMPv3 access profiles. To modify or add an SNMP profile, follow these steps: 1. Select Preferences from the ECView Pro File menu. Figure 13: Open ECView Pro Preferences 25

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 2. Set the SNMP Profile 2. Expand the ECView Pro menu tree in the Preferences window, then Access Profiles, and then select SNMP Profiles. Figure 14: SNMP Default Profile 26

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 2. Set the SNMP Profile 3. Click Modify or Add to edit or create an SNMP profile. Figure 15: SNMP v1/v2c Profile 27

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 2. Set the SNMP Profile Figure 16: SNMP v3 Profile 4. Set the community strings for SNMP v1/v2c, then click Save. For an SNMP v3 profile, set the user name, authentication, and privacy details, then click Save. 28

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 3. Set a Discovery Seed Device 3. SET A DISCOVERY SEED DEVICE The Seed Device is the IP Address of a device from which the discovery of network devices will begin. Normally, the seed device will be a core router in the network. It is important to select a device that is connected to all IP subnets in the network that need to be managed by the NMS system. Any IP subnets that are not connected to the seed device will not be able to be automatically managed by the NMS system and will need to be included manually. NOTE: Both the PC running the ECView Pro server and the selected seed device should be at locations in the network where they can reach all devices that need to be managed. NOTE: The seed device and all devices in the network that need to be discovered and managed with ECView Pro must have SNMP and LLDP (or other discovery protocols) enabled. To select a seed device, follow these steps: 1. Select Preferences from the ECView Pro File menu. Figure 17: Open ECView Pro Preferences 29

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 3. Set a Discovery Seed Device 2. Expand the ECView Pro menu tree in the Preferences window. Figure 18: ECView Pro Preferences Window 30

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 3. Set a Discovery Seed Device 3. Expand the Discovery menu and click Protocols. ECView Pro has a built-in discovery support for non-snmp devices as well as non-managed devices. The ECView Pro Discovery engine can find devices that use Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) and Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), in addition to SNMPv1, SNMPv2c and SNMPv3 devices. Figure 19: Discovery Protocols 4. Select all the discovery protocols used by devices in the network, then click Apply. 31

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 3. Set a Discovery Seed Device 5. Select Discovery from the Preferences ECView Pro menu. Figure 20: Discovery Seed Device 6. Set the seed device IP address, click Apply and then Start Discovery. 32

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 4. View Device Discovery and Mapping 4. VIEW DEVICE DISCOVERY AND MAPPING The Discovery Engine of ECView Pro is responsible for discovering the topology of the network, that is, all elements that are residing in the network. In addition, the Discovery Engine also gathers basic information about devices, such as the IP address, MAC address, sysoid, and system Description. This gathered information is then used by the mapping feature of the ECView Pro platform to layout a graphical representation of the network topology. The maps show how devices are connected, and let you view the status of each device in the network. The mapping feature has pre-programmed map layouts to represent different diagrams of the network topology. The settings and the look and feel of the mapping feature can be modified through Preferences options. To discover network devices and view topology maps, follow these steps: 1. If not already displayed, select Dashboard from the ECView Pro Tools menu. After you have set the appropriate SNMP profiles and configured the Discovery seed device, the ECView Pro platform should display an active Dashboard. 33

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 4. View Device Discovery and Mapping Figure 21: ECView Pro Dashboard 34

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 4. View Device Discovery and Mapping 2. From the Tools menu, select Mapping to show the topology mapping. The Map View of the ECView Pro platform represents the graphical topology of the network. The Main Map shows all the IP Subnets in the network discovered from the seed device. Figure 22: Show Mappings 35

CHAPTER 3 Getting Started 4. View Device Discovery and Mapping 3. Double click a subnet icon to show the detail network mapping. The detailed Map View displays all the discovered devices within the selected subnet.
