NEMA demonstrates air ambulance evacuation capability in Abuja F or easy and fast movement of patients to any part of the country for medical attention, the National Emergency Management Agency air wing has demonstrated a medical air evacuation exercise capability from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to the National Hospital Abuja. Speaking at the demonstration exercise, the Head NEMA Airwing, Captain Ibrahim Mamman explained that the exercise signified the launch of air ambulance for Nigerians. The air ambulance can be used to transport patients with critical and traumatic health situation from anywhere the individual is, he said. As a matter of fact, the jet can go anywhere in the world; it has the mile range of 3000 miles. The demonstration, which was the first of its kind, would enhance e a s y, f a s t a n d c o m f o r t a b l e movement of patients to any part of the country for medical attention. He said there were also plans to expand the project to make other air ambulances available to all parts of the country. He commended the Director-General of NEMA, Sani Sidi, for championing the project. Also speaking at the demonstration exercise, the Director Aeromedevac Consulting Services, Keith Trower, said his organization has been working with NEMA since 2014, adding that a team has trained the first medical crew including flight doctor and nurse that will help manage patients while on air till they get to their destination, adding that the company had developed specific air medical transport system to help medical challenges globally. Captain Ibrahim further appreciated President Goodluck Jonathan for the support given to the agency which involves the aviation and medical sectors. The Chief Medical Director of National Hospital Abuja, Gaff Momoh, said that air ambulance was for easy evacuation of patients from any part of the country, while the trauma center of the hospital was commissioned with the aim of managing emergencies. The air ambulance is to move patients from wherever they are in the country and still land at the appropriate time within a very short notice" He noted. FG distributes relief to Chibok, Mousa IDPs in Abuja The Federal Government has distributed assorted relief assistance to the IDPs from Chibok and Askira/Uba of Borno State that are presently in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. F l a g g i n g o f f t h e r e l i e f distribution in Kuje Area Council of FCT, Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, affirmed the commitment of the President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan to support the displaced persons while expediting efforts towards the restoration of security in their communities to enable them return home soonest. T h e M i n i s t e r w h o w a s accompanied by the Director General o f t h e N a t i o n a l E m e r g e n c y M anagement Agenc y (NEMA) M u h a m m a d S a n i S i d i, s a i d government was also concerned about the education of children affected by the security challenge in the North east and therefore has concluded arrangement to move some of them to various Unity Schools in the country under its Safe School Initiative. She assured the IDPs from Chibok of continual humanitarian supports of the Federal Government through NEMA, noting that other displaced persons including those living in the FCT are already benefitting from similar gesture. Responding on behalf of the IDPs, spokesperson of Chibok community in the FCT, Mr Gapani Yagana appreciated the Federal Government for the continued support given to them. The distribution of relief to the displaced persons from Mousa community of Askira/Uba Local Government of Borno State was done in Orozo, a suburb of Abuja by the National Emergency Management Agency on behalf of the government. The Agency's Director General who was represented by the Abuja Operations Coordinator, Ishaya Isa Chonoko advised them to remain law abiding He assured them of the concern of the Federal Government to their plights. The items distributed to the IDPs were food and non-food items including rice, grains, sleeping materials, clothing and sanitary items. Speaking on the IDPs in the FCT, Chonko said though they were not living in any formal camp but with friends and relations, NEMA has been distributing relief items to them upon their discoveries and requests for assistance. Insurgency: NEMA moves to assist victims returning to liberated communities in Adamawa State The National Emergency M a n a g e m e n t A g e n c y (NEMA), at the behest of the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has started moving into communities liberated from Boko Haram insurgents to assist returnees to rebuild their lives in Adamawa State. The Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani Sidi, set up a committee with a charge to carry out assessments and determine the i m m e d i a t e n e e d s o f p e o p l e displaced by insurgency who are returning to their communities upon the restoration of peace and order by the military. The committee will fo l l o w u p i m m e d i a t e l y w i t h appropriate relief materials to assist in the initial rehabilitation of the returning victims. Seven of eight local government areas occupied by Boko Haram insurgents in Adamawa State have been liberated by the military. Those liberated so far are Mubi North, Mubi South, Hong, Gombi, Maiha, Ganye and Michika, local government area. The committee has started its work at Gombi Local Government with a boost from the Minister of Youth Development and former governor of Adamawa State, Mr. Boni Haruna, who accompanied the team on the exercise. Others who were with the NEMA committee included Dr. Rejoice Chama, Commissioner for Health, Adamawa State, Mr. Peter Salihu Gogura, Commissioner for H o u s i n g a n d U r b a n Development,officials of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency and the Nigerian Red Cross Society. Fire disaster: NEMA takes campaign to Anambra traders The National Emergency M a n a g e m e nt Ag e n c y, NEMA, South-East zone, h a s h e l d a o n e - d a y sensitization/ simulation exercise for traders at the popular Eke market in Awka, Anambra State. The exercise was against the backdrop of fire incidents in several markets in the area, such as the popular Onitsha main market, that of Nnewi, Eke Awka, Ariara market in Aba, Abia State, Enugu timber market, among others. T h e S o u t h - E a s t z o n a l coordinator of NEMA, Major James Eze, who led the exercise at the Eke Awka market, explained that the event was aimed at strengthening p r e p a r e d n e s s, p r e v e n t i o n, mitigation, and timely response in addressing fire outbreaks in markets in the state. According to him, market fire is human-induced disaster that exposes victims to risk of injury, death and destruction of property. The simulation exercise is in line with NEMA's preparedness and response strategies, also aimed at increased synergy among response agencies in Anambra state. Eze further stated that the exe rc i s e was to e n s u re t h at stakeholders, especially first responders were fit, ready and able to provide prompt professional services meant to reduce casualties during fire incidents. W e k n o w t h a t d i s a s t e r management is demanding, and requires a lot of determination and c o m m i t m e n t t o a c c o m p l i s h ; therefore, we must understand the various roles lead and support Agencies ought to play in managing disaster and building community resilience. Some of the benefits of the simulation exercise include to enlighten the traders and the public on how best to curtail market fire, to re-define and fortify the roles of Emergency Response Agencies, during fire emergencies and to expose the traders and the market leaders to the consequences of market fires. This is even as NEMA continues to assess damages in communities occupied by Boko Haram, including Mubi. Speaking in his palace when he received a Federal Government delegation led by the Minister of Youths Development, Mr Boni Haruna, the Emir advised his people to be vigilant and law abiding and assist the government towards the maintenance of security in the area. He urged returning residents to give all the necessary cooperation to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) assessment team as t h e y g o r o u n d t o c o n d u c t a s s e s s m e n t. H e t h a n k e d t h e President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for his concern about the condition of the displaced people and his assurances of support to assist them return to normal life. The Youths Development Minister said his visit with the NEMA team was to assess the return of peace in the area and to convey the assurances of President Goodluck Jonathan to support the returnees through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to settle back in their homes. The Minister said the commander of the Army Battalion based in Mubi had assured that the soldiers have cleared the town and made it safe for law abiding citizens to return to their homes. Leader of the NEMA assessment team, Musa Zakari, said the Director General of the Agency, Muhammad Sani Sidi had directed them to carry out the assessment for immediate deployment of necessary support for the returnees to start rebuilding their lives. The assessment team met with a returnee, Mr Bitrus Yohana and his family of ten, who came back after several months of displacement. Mr. Yohanna appreciated the Federal Government and the military for the restoration of security in the area. He as well as other formerly displaced persons now back and trading in Mubi Market, called on other displaced persons still taking refuge elsewhere to return home. The Minister and NEMA officials also visited Mubi market where business activities have picked up and other places that included the Adamawa State University and State General Hospital. It would be called that Mubi was at one time declared as the capital of Boko Haram caliphate by the insurgents. PINE distributes relief in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States The Federal Government has distributed humanitarian items to persons affected by insurgency through the Presidential Initiative For North East (PINE) to compliment the efforts of t h e N a t i o n a l E m e r g e n c y Management Agency (NEMA). F l a g g i n g o f f t h e r e l i e f distribution to the IDPs in Fufore, Adamawa State, Chairman of PINE, Professor Adesoji Adelaja, said the relief support was aimed at providing succour to the displaced persons in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States. He said the gesture was one of the multia p p r o a c h a d o p t e d b y t h e government to properly address the plights of the persons affected by the security problem. The Chairman of PINE who was represented by the Programme Development and Implementation Associate of the initiative, Alhaji Mohammed D a n j u m a s a i d t h e F e d e r a l Government was determined to sustain the relief supports. He assured the IDPs that efforts were already being made to enable them return home with the on-going military operation to flush out the insurgents from their communities to restore normalcy, law and order in those areas. He said the National Emergency Management Agency and Nigerian Red Cross have been requested to assist in the distribution o f t h e i tems to t h e I D Ps i n collaboration with the various officials of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno State Governments.
