3 FOREWORD In this thirteenth edition of the directory is contained the list of accredited/re-accredited or approved programmes offered by the Polytechnics, Monotechnics and similar tertiary technological institutions in Nigeria whose graduates can be awarded the National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), and Full Professional Diploma (Post-HND) as the case may be, in accordance with the provision of the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act 16 of August 1985 and Act 9 of The directory has continued to be an authoritative source of information to all persons - students, employers, guidance counsellors, registration councils, the NYSC Directorate and other organisations about the status of the programmes offered by Nigerian Polytechnics, Colleges of Agriculture and similar institutions and their admission requirements. The directory covers 1664 different programmes which are offered in the Polytechnics and Monotechnics, and for which national curricula have been developed by the Board. Only the programmes listed against the institutions as approved/accredited/re-accredited are nationally recognised as ND, HND and Post HND as the case may be, as at January The directory in addition to printed copies has been rendered on CD ROMs and is available on the Board s website at I congratulate heads of the institutions whose programmes have maintained accreditation status and are listed in this edition of the directory for ensuring that the programmes offered by their institutions met the national minimum academic standards as laid down by the Board. It is also hoped that all programmes listed as approved to run will earn accreditation when they are visited in the fourth semester of the commencement of the programme. It is hoped that institutions that run programmes whose accreditation or approval time has expired will endeavour to make all necessary arrangements in order to make them recognized before the Board expunges such programmes from the directory. 16 In exercise of the powers conferred on it by the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act (No.16, of August 1985), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has granted accreditation to the various programmes offered by Nigerian Polytechnics, Colleges of Agriculture and similar tertiary technical institutions which are contained in this directory. Institutions offering the programmes can award the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) or Full Professional Diploma [Post-HND] as appropriate, to graduates of the programmes. The Accreditation granted to a programme is with effect from the date indicated against the programme. All programmes granted Accreditation would be subject to Re-accreditation after five calendar years. 16

HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION INTO A PROGRAMME The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) conducts all direct admissions into the National Diploma (ND) programmes offered by all polytechnics and similar tertiary institutions in the country, except for candidates who enrolled in the appropriate preliminary national diploma courses. Usually, a prospective candidate for national diploma programmes applies to JAMB for application form, writes the matriculation examination and on the basis of his/her score in the examination and other criteria that may be laid down by the Proprietor of the institution a candidate may be offered provisional admission. The final admission of the candidate, however, depends on his/her meeting the minimum admissions requirements as laid down by the NBTE. In the case of admissions into other programmes offered by the polytechnics, namely, the Higher National Diploma (HND) and the Preliminary National Diploma (Pre-ND) the following procedure may apply; Application forms are usually obtained from the individual institution for a fee. The forms could also be obtained from the NBTE Secretariat Kaduna or the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja. Completed forms are returned to the institutions. Many institutions now provide on-line application/registration. Admission of a candidate into a programme is the prerogative of the Academic Board of the institution which must ensure that the candidate meets the minimum entry requirements for the programme as laid down by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) below: B. GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENT INTO NATIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES. The minimum entry requirements for the ND Programmes are as follows: 1. SSCE/GCE ordinary level or its equivalent with credit passes in four subjects relevant to the programme at not more than two sittings; 2. Four credit passes in relevant subjects obtained at the final examination of an NBTE recognised preliminary ND Programme offered in a Polytechnic or similar Post-secondary technical institution. 3. The National Technical Certificate (NTC) or National Business Certificate (NBC) with pass in a trade plus four relevant academic subjects and at least a pass in English Language. 4. A satisfactory score in the MPCE examination, which is conducted annually by JAMB. 5. Holders of the Advanced National Technical Certificate (ANTC) may be given enhanced placement in the ND Programme provided they have also met the minimum entry requirements into the ND programmes and obtained good grades in the ANTC Examinations. Admission Requirements into Pre-National Diploma Programmes For the Pre-National Diploma programme, the entry requirement is four GCE O Levels or SSCE/NBC/NTC ordinary passes in not more than two sittings in subjects relevant to the 76

77 programme including English and Mathematics. Specific admission requirements for the Pre- ND programmes are as follows: Pre-ND Science & Technology 1. GCE O Level or SSCE ordinary passes or their equivalent in English Language, Mathematics and two subjects from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or all the three science subjects depending on the ND programme in which the applicant will finally enrol. 2. National Technical Certificate (NTC) with a pass in a trade and four relevant academic subjects in English Language, Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry and one of the following: Technical Engineering Drawing, General Metal Work, General Woodwork, etc. Pre-ND Business Studies 1. GCE O Level or SSCE ordinary passes or their equivalent in English Language, Mathematics and any two of the following: Economics, Commerce, Geography, Business Methods, Principles of Account, Government. 2. National Business Certificate (NBC) with a pass in a business trade, Mathematics and English Language and two other relevant subjects from the list shown above. C. 85 D. GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR HND PROGRAMME Applicants who possess the following qualifications may be considered for direct admission into Higher National Diploma Programmes: 1. The National Diploma with a minimum of lower credit pass in the discipline obtained from an NBTE accredited programme plus a minimum of one-year Post-ND cognate work experience in the field of specialisation. 2. A limited number of candidates with ND at pass level and a minimum of two years post-nd work experience may also be considered.; 3. For the HND Bilingual Secretarial Programme, a pass in the relevant language at the SSCE/GCE or equivalent qualifications will be an advantage. This is in addition to 1 2 above. All candidates will be expected to pass an intensive 16 weeks language course prior to the commencement of the programme.
