Mathematics Intervention and Programs Grades K 12 Program Audience Purpose Requirements SNAP Math Recovery Council Assessment Kindergarten SNAP is an assessment tool used to determine if students have developed the skills and processes associated with early childhood mathematics. SNAP replaces the math portion of the KPA. Each kindergarten student participates in SNAP three times during the school year. Training and Materials Currently, HCPS purchases training, assessment materials, and student folders. Training sessions are conducted by the Math Recovery Council/HCPS personnel. Each kindergarten teacher attends at least 1 day of training. Implementation SNAP consists of a series of structured interview questions. Kindergarten students are interviewed individually. The time required to complete each assessment depends on student responses to the interview questions. Add+Vantage MR Math Recovery Council Assessment Grades 1 5 Add+Vantage MR is an assessment tool used to determine if students have developed the number and operation skills and processes associated with grade level outcomes. Students who may have deficiencies in mathematical understanding as demonstrated by poor performance on classroom assessments and teacher observations are candidates for Add+Vantage MR assessment. Training and Materials Currently, HCPS purchases training and assessment materials. Training sessions are conducted by the Math Recovery Council/HCPS personnel. Math specialists attend 4 days of initial training and 3 days of follow-up training. Implementation Add+Vantage MR consists of a series of structured interview questions. Math Recovery Math Recovery Council Intervention/ Grades 1 2 Math Recovery is an instructional program that addresses deficiencies in student understanding of number and operation. Early childhood students identified through SNAP and/or Add+Vantage MR assessments are candidates for the Math Recovery program. Training and Materials Currently, training and materials are provided by the Math Recovery Council at a cost of $1,100 per teacher. Math Specialists attend 10 days of training. Math Specialists may choose to complete requirements to become certificated Math Recovery teachers. Math Specialists choosing this option will work with a mentor teacher. Implementation Instruction occurs in a one-toone setting or in small groups of fewer than 5 students. Instruction is provided daily in 30 minute sessions. Afterschool Achievers: Math Club Great Source Intervention/ Grades K 8 Afterschool Achievers: Math Club is an engaging extended day program designed to strengthen, refine, and extend student understanding of mathematics concepts. Any elementary or middle school student who would benefit from additional time to explore and internalize grade level mathematics concepts are candidates for Afterschool Achievers: Math Club. Summer Success Math Great Source Intervention Grades K 8 Summer Success Math is an engaging instructional program designed to prevent slippage that occurs when school is not in session for an extended period of time. Any elementary or middle school student who would benefit from additional time to explore and internalize grade level mathematics concepts are candidates for Summer Success Math. Teacher materials are packaged in grade level kits that cost $265. Student books are specific to each grade level. Student books cost $5.50 each. Recording Pads are packaged by grade level and cost $39.95. Materials for Spanish speaking students are available. Knowing Mathematics Houghton Mifflin Grades 4 6 Knowing Mathematics is an instructional program that focuses on number and operation skills and processes. The program also includes measurement, geometry, and data analysis units. Reading, role play, and discussion of mathematics content are integral to the success of the program. Pre-tests, unit tests, and post-tests are included in the program. Students who demonstrate mathematical understanding that is 2 3 years behind their peers are candidates for the Knowing Mathematics program. Navigator America s Choice Intervention/ Grades 3 8 Navigator is a module-based instructional program designed to address student misunderstandings about mathematics concepts and processes. Students who demonstrate that gaps in their learning hinder their learning of grade level mathematics outcomes are candidates for the Navigator program. A screening test is used to determine student need. Student performance on classroom assessments and teacher observation determine candidates for screening. Each teacher participates in 1 day of initial training. This training is included in the initial cost. Materials are packaged as follows $8,500 4 learning modules, 2 sets of teacher materials, 32 concept books, and 1 day of training $10,500 6 learning modules, 2 sets of teacher materials, 32 concept books, and 1 day of training $1,026 learning modules purchased the initial 4 or 6 module package; two instructor sets and 30 student sets are included in each module purchase group setting of 10 14 students. Ramp Up to Algebra America s Choice supplants Middle School Mathematics: Course 3 Grade 8 only Ramp Up to Algebra is an instructional program designed to address student misunderstandings about mathematics concepts and processes. Student learning is accelerated so that the student is ready to begin algebra in ninth grade. Enrollment in this Ramp Up to Algebra is limited to students who have not earned a MSA score of proficient across two or more years. Each teacher participates in 3 days of initial training. Training for 30 teachers is included in the HCPS purchase. Follow-up training is available for teachers and administrators. Currently teacher and student materials are provided by HCPS. Instruction occurs in class groups not to exceed 25 students. Instruction is provided 90 minutes daily throughout the school year. Cognitive Tutor Algebra Carnegie Learning Intervention supplants UCSMP Algebra Grades 9 12 Cognitive Tutor Algebra is a text and internet-based program that builds algebra understanding through real-world contexts. Students and teachers receive immediate feedback regarding student performance. Students who did not begin their formal study of algebra in middle school are enrolled in Cognitive Tutor Algebra in ninth grade. Each teacher participates in 3 days of initial training during the summer. Internet-based applications are included in the HCPS purchase. Algebra/Data Analysis HSA Resources created by HCPS In conjunction with MSDE Grades 9 12 Algebra Data Analysis HSA Resources is a collection of learning units aligned with Maryland Core Learning Goals 1 and 3. Units are designed to be completed independently by individual students under the direction of a teacher. Students who failed the Algebra/Data Analysis HSA but earned the minimum Algebra/Data Analysis score that contributes to the composite HSA score required for graduation and passed their algebra course are candidates for independent study. Algebra/Data Analysis HSA subscores for individual students are analyzed to determine which students should complete which learning units. There is no cost for these materials. Students are to complete work independently. Minimal instruction and mentoring occurs in a one-toone setting before or after school. Students retake the Algebra/Data Analysis HSA at the next administration. Algebra/Data Analysis HSA Resources created by HCPS in conjunction with MSDE Grades 9 12 Algebra Data Analysis HSA is an instructional program that blends online instruction with test preparation. The online component of the program was developed by the Maryland State Department of Education. Students who passed their algebra class, but did not pass the Algebra/Data Analysis HSA and did not earn the minimum Algebra/Data Analysis score to contribute to the composite HSA score required for graduation are candidates for this program.
