WELCOME TO HILBRE SIXTH FORM WE ARE PROUD OF OUR SIXTH FORM AT HILBRE AND WELCOME YOU TO THIS BOOKLET TO GIVE YOU INFORMATION ABOUT OUR CURRICULUM, EXPECTATIONS AND SUCCESS THAT WE HAVE EXPERIENCED. 2017 TO 2018 WILL BE AN EXCITING YEAR AS WE HAVE DEVELOPED A FOUNDATION YEAR TO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT MORE STUDENTS TO REMAIN IN EDUCATION. Our level 3 courses have also been reviewed and we see some interesting additions that we feel meet the needs of all of our learners. We are an all-inclusive sixth form and have been able to support the progress of a range of students. We have bespoke pathways for our most able students who have gone on to read Medicine, Earth Sciences and Law at Russell Group Universities. We have careers advice that has allowed our hard work and diligent students to take advantage of opportunities that has now enabled them to progress to coveted apprenticeships in the NHS and Land Rover Jaguar. We also have a support package for students with additional needs who have been able to be successful and progress to higher education. We believe our sixth form is a happy purposeful place where all our students can experience success and looking forward to seeing what we have to offer, Jane Whisker Deputy Headteacher The sixth form leaders have high expectations of learners, which leads to excellent attitudes. The broad, engaging sixth form curriculum and the support they receive means learners do well and their attendance is high. Careers education and guidance are excellent and learners are very well prepared for their next steps. All move on to further or higher education, employment or training. SIXTH FORM LIFE We recognise that it is important that students are successful academically and also given the opportunities that will enable them to reach their potential and follow their chosen career. We have high expectations of students regarding progress, attendance, punctuality and effective use of their personal study time. We have a dedicated supervised Directed Study Area where students are timetabled to complete independent study. Students are afforded many wider opportunities to develop their leadership and team-building skills including The Duke of Edinburgh Gold award, Volunteering abroad, Subject Peer Mentoring, and Work Experience. Our students are actively involved in fund raising activities for nominated charities and regularly collect donations for our local Food Bank. The Student Leadership Team arrange wellbeing and socialising activities and encourage students to be involved with sporting, drama and music events and of course the Sixth Form Prom! The Hilbre High Sixth Form in the Big Apple! They have also organised debates, inviting local Members of Parliament to a Question Time event. We regularly arrange field trips and visits abroad to destinations including New York, Poland, Iceland and South Africa. We pride ourselves in developing all round students and believe that through the care, guidance and support we provide, each student will flourish during their time in Hilbre Sixth Form. CAREERS SUPPORT Work-related learning, Careers and Enterprise education are significant facets of the development and preparation our students undertake in readiness for joining the highly competitive worlds of work, training & Higher Education. Activities are very varied but include mock interviews with external employers, visiting speakers from industry and local universities, visits to universities and industry, and visits to the regional Higher Education fair. Work-related learning includes compulsory work experience in Year 12, which is invaluable for UCAS, employment, and apprenticeship applications. This initiative is further supported by an Apprenticeship Evening each January at which students and parents/carers can meet employers and relevant training organisations. All students in the Sixth Form are able to use support from the school s full time Careers Development & Guidance Co-ordinator, Francis Trought. Support available varies from assessing work experience placements for health and safety, to outlining individual careers guidance and wider career pathway options. Where appropriate, this can include employment, apprenticeships, Higher Education and support to help the transition of pupils with additional needs.
