UWA STUDENT GUILD TAVERN DESIGN COMPETITION $1000 FIRST PRIZE // CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR DESIGN BUILT INFORMATION PACK & RESOURCES: WWW.ALVASTUDENTSOCIETY.ORG SUBMISSIONS CLOSE 4:00PM, 29TH AUGUST 2014

UWA STUDENT GUILD TAVERN DESIGN COMPETITION PROJECT BRIEF The Client The Site The Architect Name Tom Henderson Gary Morris [Winning Scheme locum tenens] Company UWA Student Guild UWA Student Guild Tavern Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Visual Arts Address Building 329 M300 35 Stirling Highway CRAWLEY WA 6009 Cameron Hall M300 35 Stirling Highway CRAWLEY WA 6009 Building 681 M433 35 Stirling Highway CRAWLEY WA 6009 Contact +61 (08) 6488 2295 +61 (08) 6488 2318 +61 (08) 6488 2582 Email president@guild.uwa.edu.au hello@guild.uwa.edu.au alva.admin@guild.uwa.edu.au THE BRIEF The Tavern, situated on the ground floor of the Cameron Hall Building facing east towards the Swan River, has been a place for students to congregate with their colleagues for more than 30 years. While the needs and wants of regular students at UWA has dramatically changed over time, the Tavern however has sadly remained the same. The tastes of students and the usage of the Tavern have also changed dramatically and as such the Tavern is in need of a significant update. In May 2014, Guild Executive commissioned a report from the Tertiary Access Group (Attachment A) to look into the Tavern and see how it compared to other student-run establishments around Australia. The summary has confirmed the need for some significant thought in the way in which the Tavern is utilised with the opportunity to explore the food and service arrangements. In response, the UWA Student Guild (the Guild ) has called for students currently enrolled at the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Visual Arts (ALVA) at UWA to propose schemes to reinvigorate the Tavern, with consideration to the recommendations put forward by TAG and the Guild Director, and requirements as set by the 101st Guild Council (Attachment B). The Guild is considering a refurbishment to the interior Tavern service area and the external Beer Garden to improve the look and feel of the venue. While these are not strict considerations, they would very much like to see a design that creates a welcoming and cosy atmosphere that makes the Tavern a destination to hang out and chill with friends. It is one of the only parts of the university which students can claim sole patronage, and designs that are student friendly and inviting are encouraged. Apart from the considerations set out below, the designs may take on any designs cues. 1

The Guild is considering the Tavern reinvigoration as a multi-stage development: Stage Time Frame Development Stage 1 Immediate (Semester 2, 2014) Removal of Fencing / Entrance Gates Stage 2 Short-Term (2015-2017) Furniture, Courtyard and Tavern Renew Toilet Fittings Renew Window Dressings and Paint Move Stage Location Carpet Ceiling Stage 3 Long-Term (2018 - Beyond) Shenton House Courtyard between Shenton House and Tavern Future vacant Cameron Hall opportunity CONSIDERATIONS The following considerations should be taken into account when submitting a design for this project: The Bar: The refurbishment of the Bar area has only recently been completed - it would be beneficial if it can be incorporated into the design proposal. Structural Changes: The ability to complete significant structural changes will be challenging and outside the scope of this project. As such, the current Tavern footprint will remain the same. Liquor Licensing: As mentioned in the preamble, the fencing is still under investigation. However, it is envisaged that the tavern will require a barrier of some variety. It is recommended that the design proposal alters the current fencing arrangement. University Approval: As mentioned above, any major structural changes will require a higher level of University and City of Subiaco approval. All minor works will still need to be run by the University to ensure they meet basic safety requirements. Time Line: Ideally design, approval and construction will be complete by the O-Day 2015. Construction time are limited to non-student/non-operation times, and as such mid-semester break and summer break are the only construction times. Design proposals that can be completed in stages (started and completed within construction periods) will be commended. Flexibility: The design proposal must take into account the current uses of the Tavern, quiz nights and small club events, and maintain the pool tables (unless an adequate reason can be provided for their removal). THE BUDGET The total budget is estimated to be $80,000 pending Guild Council approval. This is to include but not limited to - all architects, documentation and administration fees, construction materials, finishes, furnishings and GST. SITE VISIT A site visit will be held at 2:30pm 3:30pm, Wednesday 6th August 2014. Attendance at this site meeting is not essential, though highly recommended. Tom Henderson, Sophie Giles and (members of The Jury) will be in attendance and able to answer questions in regard to maintained and future uses of the spaces. 2
