1 The Center of Theological Inquiry In cooperation with The Program in Law and Public Affairs, Princeton University Inquiry on Law and Religious Freedom for research scholars who welcome the dialogue between law and religion Academic Year in residence in Princeton, NJ ONLINE APPLICATION WINDOW: Sept. 1, 2013 Jan. 15, 2014 With support from the John Templeton Foundation The Center of Theological Inquiry invites applications for membership in its interdisciplinary residential research team exploring questions of law and religious freedom. About the Research Team The Program Year and Residency Requirements Team Membership: Positions and Qualifications o Research Fellows in Legal Studies o Research Fellows in Theology Financial Support and Work Space How to Apply Online and Deadlines Selection Process and Notifications ABOUT THE RESEARCH TEAM In the modern world, religious diversity has made religious freedom both a demand of individual conscience and a requirement of social peace. The question for law and society has often been, How much religious freedom can we allow? New inquiries in history, anthropology, psychology, and sociology suggest that religion remains essential to human identity and social cooperation, even in a modern, pluralistic society. Perhaps, then, the question is also, How much religious freedom do we require? Answering those questions involves critical thinking about both law and religious commitment and invites constructive efforts to reconcile laws that preserve religious freedom with the requirements of many different religions. This raises a series of interrelated questions that call for theological inquiry in an interdisciplinary context:
2 Do religious traditions sustain their own distinctive ideas of religious freedom? What internal limits do religious traditions impose on religious constraint? What forms of public activity (worship, education, charity, etc.) are essential to religious life? Is there a general understanding of religious freedom that can be formulated as a universal human right? Or does religious freedom necessarily take different forms in different contexts? How does the right to religious freedom relate to other rights? THE PROGRAM YEAR AND RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS Research team members will be resident scholars at the Center of Theological Inquiry (CTI), an independent research institution in Princeton, New Jersey. Appointments will be for the academic year from September 1, 2014 to May 31, Exceptional proposals of high relevance to the inquiry may be considered for only one semester in residence. The research program includes a weekly colloquium at which members share work in progress. There will also be symposia and consultations with leading scholars, including Jeremy Waldron, David Hollenbach, John Witte, and Nigel Biggar; and numerous opportunities for structured and informal discussions with other members of the research team and scholarly colleagues from other institutions. Members of the research team will have access to library facilities, and each member will have a study at CTI s Henry R. Luce Hall for daily work and a fully furnished residence in Princeton at CTI s Vella Handly Templeton Residences. Fellows are expected to make Luce Hall at CTI their regular place of work at least four days a week during the fall and spring academic terms, to participate in the weekly colloquium, and to attend other events that are part of the Inquiry s program. They are welcome, but not required, to participate in events in the Princeton academic community that do not conflict with the Inquiry calendar. Fellows must secure prior approval from the Director of CTI for lectures, conferences, or other personal or professional obligations that require extended travel away from Princeton or absence from scheduled Inquiry events. TEAM MEMBERSHIP: POSITIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS The research team will include scholars in (1) legal studies; and (2) theology or related research disciplines. To that end, applicants may apply for any of the following positions: Senior Research Fellow in Legal Studies (1 position) Research Fellow in Legal Studies (4 positions) Research Fellow in Theology (4 positions) Junior Research Fellow in Legal Studies (1 position) Junior Research Fellow in Theology (1 position) Funding for these fellowships has been made possible by support from the John Templeton
3 Foundation. The following outlines the criteria and qualifications for each position. For all Fellow Positions Each applicant should propose a research project that is relevant to the Inquiry on Law and Religious Freedom and open to interdisciplinary discussion in theology, law, humanities, and the human sciences. Applicants are also encouraged to provide evidence of collaborative or interdisciplinary work in professional or academic settings. CTI does not support off- site research, the development of curricula or teaching materials, work in professional practice, direct advocacy of causes, or academic work in residence in other places. The Inquiry is designed to give fellowship recipients a year in residence at CTI for scholarly reflection in a collegial, interdisciplinary setting. Successful applicants will propose a project that is at an appropriate stage of development to benefit from these opportunities and to enrich the work of the other resident scholars. Fellows in Legal Studies CTI invites applications from outstanding faculty members, independent scholars, lawyers, and judges, with a demonstrated scholarly interest in legal issues relating to religion. The program is open to all regardless of citizenship or religious practice or beliefs. The Senior Research Fellow in Legal Studies will assume a leadership role working with Robin Lovin, CTI s Director of Research, who will be the Senior Research Fellow in Theology. Together they will share overall responsibility for leadership of the inquiry. This position will be filled prior to selection of the other Research Fellows so that the individual can participate in the latter selection process. Applicants should note the earlier deadline for this position. Any applicant not selected for the Senior position will be included in the general selection pool unless the individual notifies CTI that he or she does not wish to be considered. Research Fellow applicants in Legal Studies should have a demonstrated expertise in law and religion. Applicants should have a PhD or Juris Doctor or the equivalent terminal degree. The applicant should work centrally on law and religion issues but need not be based at a law school or legal studies program. Junior Research Fellow applicants in Legal Studies should be recent recipients of the J.D., or Ph.D. or equivalent research degree who do not yet hold a tenured academic appointment. They should have an advanced research project beyond their dissertation and be prepared to assist the Senior Research Fellows in their leadership of the research team. Fellows must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by February 1, 2014, including a successful defense of their dissertation.
4 The CTI fellowship program is independent of the Program in Law and Public Affairs (LAPA) residential fellowship program at Princeton University. CTI Fellows will be welcome to attend many of the LAPA Fellows programs to the extent that they do not conflict with the requirements of the CTI Program. Fellows in Theology Research Fellow applicants in Theology, including scholars in related disciplines, should hold full- time academic positions at an accredited higher education institution. Junior Research Fellow applicants in Theology, including scholars in related disciplines, should be recent recipients of a Ph.D. or equivalent research degree who do not yet hold a tenured academic appointment. They should have an advanced research project beyond their dissertation and be prepared to assist the Senior Research Fellows in their leadership of the research team. Junior Fellows must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by February 1, 2014, including a successful defense of their dissertation. FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND WORK SPACE Research fellowship awards will vary according to the current salary and other circumstances of individual fellows. Typical awards are one- half of an individual s current salary for the term of their appointment at CTI, up to a cap to be determined by CTI. This may be lower than half salary for those who are highly compensated at their home institutions. Additional compensation may be available for the Senior Fellow. Junior Fellows will receive up to $40,000 for two semesters in residence at CTI. Fellows and accompanying families shall reside in CTI housing in Princeton. The Templeton Residences provide fully furnished townhouses located three miles from Luce Hall, the home of CTI s program. The residences are on a quiet street with parking, play areas for children, and proximity to local schools. All Fellows pay a monthly housing fee plus utilities (approximate cost $1,250 per month) for use of the townhouses and should include the cost of local transportation in budgeting. To the extent that this level of assistance from CTI does not cover all living expenses, including housing fee, utilities, travel and insurance, fellows are encouraged to seek funding from other sources. They must take care, however, that any other awards they may accept do not conflict with the residency requirements of the Program. CTI will provide each resident fellow with an individual study at Luce Hall, the home of the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton. Wireless internet service and printing and copying facilities are provided for use by the resident scholars. Resident scholars are required to provide their own laptop and/or desktop computers.
