PAGE 1 OF 6 Q: How Can I Check My RS-422 Port or Converter To Verify Operation? A: Perform a Loopback test using a Terminal program that lets you Open a serial port to send and receive characters. To check both inputs and outputs, the outputs are connected to the port inputs as shown in the table below. Loopback wiring is shown in Figures 1 to 8. RS-422 ports and converters that support 2 channels will have connections for only Receive and Transmit. A 4 channel device will add connections for the RTS and CTS handshaking channels. A 8 channel device adds DTR and DSR and CD or RI. CD and RI are typically supplied only by modems, outputs on the DCE device, inputs on the DTE device. Windows 95/98/SE/ME/2000 or NT 4.0: Use ComTest from our Website to check serial ports assigned Com1 or higher under Windows. It can access Com ports 1-8, including USB serial devices. ComTest has simulated indicator lights for line status for RTS, DTR, CTS, DSR, and CD. It will let you set the DTR and RTS line high or low to check the inputs, or set DTR & RTS high to power a port powered device or check loopback connections on devices which don't use handshaking. ComTest Features are listed starting on page 5 of this FAQ. MS-DOS: Use Simpterm from our Website to check motherboard or ISA based serial ports under DOS. Do not use SimpTerm with Windows. Download & Install The Program 1. Before starting, make a Directory Folder (such as Test) on your hard drive to use when downloading the program. 2. Go to the B&B Electronics Mfg. Co. Website. http://www.bb-elec.com 3. Select Support 4. View the right sidebar for Most Popular Downloads, Software 5. Select ComTest 6. Download into the directory (test) you previously made. 7. Quit your web browser. 8. Open the directory (test) you downloaded to. 9. Double-click com_test.exe 10. After file extraction is done, close the DOS window. 11. Double-click Setup within the Test folder. 12. Click Next, then Click Next. 13. Select destination directory. (default is C:\Program Files\B&B Electronics) 14. Click Next.

PAGE 2 OF 6 15. Click Finish button after Installation Complete message. Note: If operating under Windows, a Com port number must be assigned by Windows, and it must not be used by a serial mouse or open by another application. CONNECTIONS: Make your Loopback connections for Transmit & Receive. Make sure you connect the TD(A)- to the RD(A)-, and the TD(B)+ to the RD(B)+ and in a similar fashion for the other channels. It is usually easiest to wire a matching DB9 or DB25 connector according to the pinouts. See Figures 1 to 8 for specified models. To check devices with CTS & RTS and DTR & DSR make those connections as well. Note: Pin numbers are molded into the connector. To locate pin #1 on the male connector hold the connector horizontally with the row with the most pins on top, the upper leftmost pin is #1. On a female connector, the upper rightmost is #1.

PAGE 3 OF 6 USING COMTEST TO CHECK SIGNALS 1. Start ComTest from your Programs menu under B&B Electronics. 2. Select the Com port number you want to check. ComTest will only show Windows based Com ports that are not in use. If another program is using the port, it will not be available. Please close down any other programs that may be accessing the port. If another program is using the same IRQ number that port is using, you will not be able to use both ports at once unless both devices are PCI or USB based. 3. Accept the default baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, the program will use the same settings for input and output, so any setting works with the same port. 2 Channel Devices 4. Type some characters in the upper window. The same characters should appear in the lower window. Note that the enter key value will be shown in brackets as <0D> If you are checking a RS-422 port of device that supports only 2 channels (TD & RD) you are finished if the data is returned in the lower window. If the device requires RTS to enable the transmitter, go to step 5, then repeat step 4. If data is not shown, try another port to identify the port you have actually looped back.

PAGE 4 OF 6 4 Channel Devices 5. Next use Options, check RTS to set the RTS indicator red, view the CTS indicator becoming red, then uncheck it and view the indicators becoming dark. If this works properly, the RTS output and CTS inputs are looped back and working. 8 Channel Devices 6. Next check DTR. Check that when DTR is checked on Options, the DTR indicator and DSR and CD indicator lights are red. Uncheck it to lower it and view the indicators going dark. CD will only change when the CD line is connected to DTR, and DSR only change when connected to DTR. If data is shown in the lower window when typed in the upper, and the DTR and RTS lines change the DSR, CD and CTS lines, the RS-232 Port & RS-422 Converter is most likely fine. Actual signal levels on the A & B lines can be statically checked with a DC voltmeter or oscilloscope. The B line will be positive (about 4 to 5 VDC typical, but at least 200 mv if the line is loaded by 120 ohm termination resistors) relative to the A line, when not asserted, or opposite polarity when asserted. With a dual trace scope in DC coupling mode, with one channel on Data A, and the other channel on Data B, the two lines can be seen as opposite levels, when A is high, B is low and vice versa. ComTest features listed on next page.
