4 Installation and Setup Installation and Setup To install the barcode scanner The MS830 and MS833 laser scanners are low cost barcode readers capable of reading both Sony and Odetics format tape labels. When installing the barcode scanner, ADC utilizes the serial interface, for compatibility with the existing software. Reference the manufacturer documentation for information on other configurations of the barcode scanner. RS232 Interface To use the scanner as a RS232 serial interface, a RS232 interface cable and a power adapter are required. Note: If a customer has a workstation without a serial port, the scanner can be installed with an off the shelf USB to serial cable 1. Make sure the scanner s cable has the right connector and pinout for the RS232 port of the host device. If the pinout is different from device, swapping pins is necessary to achieve proper communication. 2. If the host device has power output at RS232 interface port, the scanner can be powered by connecting that power line to pin 9 of the scanner connector. If there is no power at RS232 port, An AC adapter is needed. Plug the adapter into the connector at the end of the interface cable. 3. 5 Installation and Setup If necessary create the appropriate cable for connecting to the host machine. For details on required ADC cabling see section: Barcode Scanner Cabling. 4. When the scanner is powered, a long beep sound indicates the scanner is ready to use. Barcode Scanner Cabling DB9 RS-232 Adapter cable The barcode scanner can communicate via a standard RS-232 serial interface using the adapter cable included with the barcode reader. DB9 RS-422 Adapter cable A cable can be made with the following pinouts and an RS232/RS422 Adapter, such as a B&B Converter. It is necessary to use an RS-422 to RS-232 converter for control. The Pin outs are noted in the chart below. A custom RS pin to 25-pin cable will be needed to connect to the converter. Wire the DB9 ADC Adapter to the RS232 port on the barcode scanner. 2. Place the DB9 connector onto any available COM1 or COM2 port on the back of the workstation computer. Device Controller Connection: 1. Wire the DB9 ADC Adapter to the RS232 port on the barcode scanner using an external 422 to 232 converter. 2. Connect the scanner to the desired RS422 serial port on the serial card of the ADC Device Server. DO NOT connect to the COM port of the Device Server Imagine Communications Corp. 6 Installation and Setup NOTE 1: Serial Port # is your option and port # designates the device number in the ADC NOTE 2: The appropriate driver must be available and configured in device server software. 7 About Configuring the Barcode Reader Configuring the barcode reader requires the user perform two operations: Scan a Setup Chart of barcodes: IAC200405, 4600E2JC0000, 4C6. to setup for ADC operations. Then use the UniTech setup program to ensure/confirm the configuration of the barcode reader. Note: The application can output this sheet of barcodes. 8 Running the Scanner Configuration Manager Once the barcodes have been scanned to perform the configuration, use the Scanner Configuration Manager utility to ensure all configuration parameters are properly set. Reference manufacturer documentation for more information on this utility. The following procedure is summarized from manufacturer documentation. The manufacturer calls for uploading the Current Settings hierarchy from the device to the Scanner Configuration Manager utility, reviewing/editing the configuration, and then, if changes were made, downloading new configuration to the device Imagine Communications Corp. 9 1. Follow manufacturer procedures to load and start SCMSetup.exe. The icon to the left appear on the desktop: for details.. Reference Manufacturer CD and Installation instructions 2. Click on the SCM icon. The Scanner Configuration Manager screen similar to the following is displayed: 3. Click the upload icon ( ). The Upload Setting dialog is displayed. 4. In the Upload Setting dialog: a. Enter the scanner product number (e.g. MS830). b. Select By RS232 Interface radio button c. Click OK. The LED on the top of the scanner flashes during the upload process. 10 Ensuring Required Setting Changes For each or the following Settings, ensure the designated attribute changes are made: Under 'Device' Device = 04 Serial Wedge Under 'Beeps and Delays' InterBlock Delay = 3 seconds Under 'RS232' Baud Rate = Parity = Even Data Bits = 7 Under 'Scanner Port' Terminator = Enter Label Type = Positive and Negative Preamble = "<04><*>" To Review Settings 1. On the Scanner Configuration Manager screen click on any of the selections under Current Settings to view its Attributes 2. Double-click on any of the Attributes to review/edit the setting for that attribute. An Edit Setting dialog appears displaying the name of the selected attribute and it s current value. 11 3. If any configuration settings were changed, click on the Download icon ( ). The LED on the top of the scanner flashes during the download process. The new configuration is downloaded to the device. MS833 Note: For the MS833, save (download) the configuration without making any changes. This will ensure the configuration is set correctly. 4. On completion the system prompts to perform an optional Quick Test. ADC-100 Device Server Set-Up If directly connecting the barcode scanner to the Device Server, use the Configuration Tool utility on an automation workstation, such as the Media Client workstation, to configure the barcode scanner. 1. On the Client workstation, select the Configuration Tool icon on the screen. This launched the Configuration tool. 2. Enter password: harris (lowercase), and then click OK Note: harris is the default setting. Customers may designate a different setting. 3. Select (highlight) the appropriate Device Controller/Server. 4. Right click on the Device Controller/Server entry and them from the popup menu select Configure Devices. 5. On the Configure Devices screen: a. Expand the entry located in the right-hand pane: Barcode Reader. b. Select (highlight) the appropriate barcode type. (i.e. Unitech MS830) c. Drag the selected barcode type from the Available pane and drop it onto a target Channel ## listed on the Configure pane. d. The Name and Device columns for the Channel entry are updated to indicate the device dropped. 6. On the Configure pane: a. Select (highlight) the dropped device. b. Right click on the selected entry. c. From the popup menu select Properties. 7. On the General tab of the Properties dialog: a. Specify the Device Name Imagine Communications Corp. 12 b. (If required) under Tape Options, specify the Odetics Type Label Length (selection range: 4-8). 8. On the Serial Port tab of the Properties dialog specify the port on the device server that the barcode scanner will connect to. 9. Select Apply. 10. Select OK. 11. From the menu bar select File > Save Devices. This saves the configuration. 12. Exit the Configuration Tool. Application Status Display Test Read a barcode to confirm the barcode reader is connected and functional. Driver Configurations To confirm barcode reader operation for configurations using the Unitech MS830 driver: On startup the Air Client application Device Status window for the barcode reader device reads UNKNOWN until a barcode is read. Read a barcode. The status display changes to Read. After about 15 minutes without any labels being read, the status returns to the UNKNOWN status. Known Issue: For MS83x Driver Configurations approximately 15 minutes after a barcode is successfully read the status will go to UNKNOWN until a subsequent barcode is successfully read Media Client Set-Up (direct connection) If directly connecting the barcode scanner to the Media Client Workstation, use Media Client to configure the barcode scanner Imagine Communications Corp. 13 To Setup the Barcode Reader 1. From the Client desktop select the Media Client icon. 2. From the Media Client menu bar select Properties > Barcode. The Barcode Printing Properties dialog is displayed: 3. On the Barcode Printing Properties dialog: a. Check the Barcode Reader checkbox. b. Use the dropdown to select the connection port on the workstation (typically, Com1 or Com2). c. The Barcode Reader tab is displayed. 4. On the Barcode Reader tab: a. Specify the Type of reader : Use the dropdown to select PC-Wand. b. Check the option: Specify Spot Type for Database Inserts This operational configuration setting is not a device requirement. c. Specify the Default Selection for spot type. Use the dropdown to select S (single), M (multisegment), or L (library box) This selection is required only if Specify Spot Type for Database Inserts is checked. This operational configuration setting is not a device requirement. 5. (Option) Check Preview. This allows previewing of a scanned label. 6. Click OK Imagine Communications Corp. 14 To Confirm Barcode Reader Status on Media Client Once the barcode reader has been set up, it is a good idea to review the barcode status on Media Client to ensure the device is connected. 1. From the toolbar located on the left side of the media Client window, select the database icon ( ). This opens the Database Window. 2. Select the Barcode Reader tab. PC-WAND Driver Configurations 1. Review the barcode status displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. BCR Status should read No reader PC-Wand and Error should read none. 2. Read a barcode. The status display changes to Barcode Read OK. 3. A few seconds after a label is read, the status will return to the No reader PC-Wand status. MS83x Driver Configurations To confirm barcode reader operation for configurations using the MS83x driver: 1. On startup the application status display reads No reader PC-WAND until the first time a barcode is read. 2. Read a barcode. The status display changes to Waiting for Read, followed by Barcode Read OK for a few seconds then returns to No reader PC-WAND Imagine Communications Corp.
