Numonics OEM edition driver edition 6.12 for Windows 9x-XP Due to the authors removing key facilities from this driver it cannot be used with the EasyGrid system. Install the earlier 6.09.01 or 6.09.03 diver or contact Visual Precision for a copy of the professional driver Numonics OEM edition driver edition 6.09.01 & 6.09.03 for Windows 9x-XP It is assumed at all stages of the guide that no other digitiser drivers are installed on the computer. If a previous driver has been installed, this will require to be fully removed before installation of the new driver. Please consult the guide for your previous driver relating to uninstalling it from your system. If you are installing to a new computer drivers for a digitiser will not be present. In all instances, this guide relates to versions 6.09.01 and 6.09.03 of the driver and although perhaps similar in appearance does not relate to any previous or subsequent versions of the Numonics OEM driver. Please contact us for additional guidelines should you have a different version (note: version 6.12 is not suitable for use with EasyGrid due to it s lack of facilities). There are two stages involved in the implementation of the driver: installing the driver from the CD supplied and configuring the driver. Using these instructions it is a relatively simple task and should be completed in approximately 10 minutes. The WinTab compliant driver is supplied on a single CD ROM and installation must be from the disk. Under the terms of the Numonics OEM Licence the software can be loaded to one computer per purchased licence. If you wish to alternate your digitiser between several computers additional licences must be purchased. CONNECT THE DIGITISER During the installation process the tablet is polled to check for communication. Please therefore connect the digitiser to the computer by the cable supplied with your digitiser. This is standard serial cable. If you have misplaced your data cable please contact Visual Precision Ltd to purchase a replacement. The data cable should be connected between the digitiser RS232 port and the RS232 port on the computer (also referred to as a Com port) sometimes identified with a backplate stamp: 10101. When connecting to the computer serial port make a note which port is used as this must be stated later on during the installation and configuration routine (the port is most likely to be Comm1 if there is only one port, if there are two ports these should be labeled or stamped on the computer backplate as 1 and 2). The digitiser should be in factory default settings. Please refer to your digitiser manual if the digitiser is anything but brand new out of the box and ensure it has been reset to factory defaults. STAGE 1 - INSTALLING THE DRIVER 6. Ensure the digitiser is powered up and is connected to the computer via it s data cable (see above) also ensuring the digitiser puck (cursor) is also plugged in. A puck caddy is generally provided with the digitiser to give safe storage to the puck when not in use the puck can be parked in this during the install routine. 7. If not already on, switch on the computer and log-in to Windows in the usual manner (you must have local Administrator rights enabled to allow the installation of the new drivers if not, contact your computer Administrator). After installation only Power User rights are required. 8. Insert the disk into the CD drive. Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-11

9. The CD should autostart. If this function is disabled on your computer, locate and run the setup.exe file in the root folder of the CD 10. You will be presented with a number of on screen prompts. Follow the on-screen instructions using the following step guide as reference. Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-12

The InstallShield Wizard system will start the decompression checks necessary for the installation to take place and will start by interrogating your Windows installation to enable it to install the correct versions of the software. Bar should progress as Operating System version is checked Second screen also features a progress bar. The install system will automatically advance once the bar is at 100% Once Windows variables have been checked the installation process continues when the Next button is pressed. Click Next Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-13

The WinZip self extracting utility will then decompress the necessary files to your hard drive. Click OK to continue and confirm the Windows\Temp folder can be used for the temporary file location. Ensure both check boxes are ticked so that any previous installed files (perhaps from an earlier install attempt) are overwritten and that the install process can continue automatically once the files are unzipped. Confirmation this is a Numonics edition driver Click OK to continue If the folder location is acceptable, click Unzip to continue Ensure both check boxes are ticked During the decompressing procedure, a progress bar will display the current position of the decompressing task and the files being installed. Progress bar showing current files being decompressed Once unzipped, a success dialog will display. Click OK to proceed to the next stage. Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-14

The initial setup screen will then display during which time several background checks are also carried out by the installer this could take several seconds so do be patient an hourglass cursor will be seen whilst additional information is being collected The driver Licence Agreement is then displayed for acceptance or rejection select I Agree to continue with the installation (if you don t agree the install process will halt and exit) Select I Agree and click OK to continue Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-15

Confirm your name and business name (if you trade under a business name of course). The serial number field is completed automatically. Complete your Name and Company details Press Next button and confirm settings a second time To correct details select Back If details are acceptable, press Next to continue In the Setup Files dialog, select to Install accepting the default path whenever possible. The other options are greyed out and are not applicable to this version of the driver. Select install Press Next if all is acceptable Use Browse button to change the installation folder path (we suggest the default be accepted however) Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-16

Next, select both the model of the digitiser and the Communication port being used to connect the digitiser to the computer. The comm port settings can be changed after installation has been completed but it is easier to get it right at this point (see later in this section on how to change the comm port settings if you have no connectivity). Select the correct comm port (usually Com1 if there s only 1 com port on the machine) From the drop down list, select the digitiser being installed. The table below will assist if you have any doubt regarding the model type. If in doubt, call Visual Precision for model confirmation. If using the keyboard to select the model, cursor down to the model required and press ENTER to select Actual digitiser Select from list AccuGrid A1 with stylus or 4 button puck Numonics AccuGrid Series 2436 AccuGrid A1 with 16 button puck Numonics AccuGrid Series 2436 (16 button) AccuGrid A0 with stylus or 4 button puck Numonics AccuGrid Series 3648 AccuGrid A0 with 16 button puck Numonics AccuGrid Series 3648 (16 button) The Verification dialog confirms your selections. Press Next if all is acceptable or else choose Back and make the necessary corrections. Where choices have not be specified a Not Applicable (N/A) tag will show. Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-17

Ensure this is the model you selected before continuing Having confirmed the choices for installation, the install process will start copying files across to the computer and a progress dialog will be displayed. Progress will display here The necessary files will then be installed a Restart prompt given on the completion dialog. Eject the CD and click Finish. Your computer should restart automatically. Eject CD and click Finish to reboot. Close your other programs first if there are any still open. Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-18

Once restarted, your computer should display an additional entry in the Programs menu from the START key, namely Virtual Tablet, plus a desktop icon and systems tray icon for the Tablet Manager. At this stage, moving the puck or stylus on the surface of the tablet should result in movement of the mouse pointer in the Windows display (albeit slowly). If no movement is detected, first check that the digitiser is correctly configured as per the first section in this guide, then check that it is connected properly to the computer. If this is all in order it may well be that the incorrect Com Port has been specified during the installation (see next section on how to change Comm port settings). CHANGING COM PORT SETTINGS If the mouse pointer cannot be controlled (moved) by use of the digitiser puck, it may be that the incorrect comm port was selected at installation time. To change which Com Port the driver polls during communication continue as follows (this only needs to be done if you have NO communication between the digitiser and the computer): 1. Double click the Tablet Manager icon on the desktop 2. Select the System Tab 3. Select Com2 (if you originally had selected Com1) by clicking the radio button 4. Click Close button to complete Select Com2 if there is no response using Com1 and try again 5. Try the digitiser again. If there is still no pointer activity try setting to another port or physically move the data cable to another comm port on the back of the computer. Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-19

6. If this fix didn t work we recommend you change the Com Port setting back to Com1 before continuing with other technical support. If you have no mouse pointer control at this stage and have tried all comm port combinations, check the correct digitiser size has been selected during the install. If this is still correct, uninstall the driver (insert the CD again and run the setup.exe file an uninstall option will be offered as you progress through the setup screens). After uninstalling, re-install the driver again after first rebooting. If still no connectivity with the tablet call Visual Precision support for further assistance. Once installed correctly (mouse pointer movement can be made from the digitiser) the driver will require to be configured to make it suitable for use with your EasyGrid system. It is not essential that EasyGrid is installed at this stage, as the default driver settings only will be configured. IF EASYGRID HAS BEEN INSTALLED DO NOT RUN THE PROGRAM YET. RUNNING THE PROGRAM AT THIS STAGE WILL CAUSE THE DRIVER TO ASSIGN THE WRONG DEFAULT VALUES TO THE EASYGRID TASK. IF EASYGRID HAS BEEN INSTALLED AND LAUNCHED, THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS SHOULD BE DIRECTED AT THE EASYGRID TASK IN THE DRIVER SETUP AND NOT THE DEFAULT TASK. STAGE 2 - SETTING THE DEFAULT TASK (configuring the driver default settings) In basic terms the following changes will be made to the Tablet Configuration : The tracking mode Sensitivity of the tracking mode The button actions To proceed continue as follows: 1. Launch the Tablet Manager either from the Start key, desktop or system tray Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-20

2. Select the Tasks tab and then click the Default Tablet option (if it s the only option it should be highlighter automatically). We shall configure the default setting for the Tablet Manager to the settings needed for EasyGrid as they are most probably the most common digitiser applications you are probably using. Other application settings can still be set up and recorded by the Tablet Manager for use with other systems (like EasyEarthworks ) SPECIAL NOTE: If EasyGrid has already been run at this stage it will already have been assigned the default values from the Default Tablet task. In this case, EasyGrid should be launched from it s icon so that it appears in the Tablet manager Task list and all changes documented below should be made to the EasyGrid task and NOT the default task. Select the Default Tablet task only if EasyGrid hasn t yet been launched If EasyGrid HAS already been launched since installation of the WinTab driver, launch EasyGrid again and select it (it will show here in the window) Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-21

3. Next select the Pointer tab and uncheck the Absolute check box Absolute setting should NOT be checked 4. Next, select the Button Tab and define the button actions. Select each button here. Please note: the list entries have no bearing to the button numbers printed on the surface of the digitiser puck After selecting the button, select it s action here from the drop down list using the printed tables in the guide as reference To ensure the driver works correctly, each button on the puck must be assigned a unique button Action. The following tables give guidance as to the button settings required for correct operation. Please select each button from the Button List and set it s corresponding action from the Action List. Please note: the button numbers referred to in the tables are not the physical buttons as marked on the pucks, they are the button numbers referred to in the Tablet Manager dialog. Currently, EasyGrid has 6 functions that can be assigned to the puck (buttons) of which 4, 5 or all 6 (depending on your puck type) can be assigned to the puck buttons. Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-22

Although the puck has 16 buttons only 6 functions are currently available within EasyGrid and it is therefore not necessary (if only EasyGrid is being used) to assigned button actions to all buttons. The buttons shown in bold case are the ones we suggest will be used in EasyGrid and it is therefore only necessary to configure these buttons (although it does no harm to check the configuration of the rest whilst you re in the setup dialog) 5. Having set the cursor setting, select the Load Template option by right clicking on the tablet Manager icon in the systems tray. Uncheck the Ignore WinTab Positioning Unless Locked entry on the Manager tab by using the Space Bar Select the Ignore WinTab Positioning Unless Locked line and press the Space Bar to untick the line (you may have to move the blue cursor highlight off the line to see whether the tick has been removed) This completes the settings for the Default Task. When EasyGrid is launched, a new task will appear in the Tablet Manager task window (it s not necessary to look) and this will inherit the default task settings (that we have just set up). Configuration of the driver is complete. Please REBOOT your computer to conclude and test the installation. When EasyGrid is launched for the first time it s icon will appear as an entry in the tasks section of the Tablet Manager tasks window and the task will inherit the default settings we have just made (to the Default setting option no less). You can see this by opening the Tablet manager window (double click the Tablet manager icon on the desktop) and then launch EasyGrid. Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-24

As EasyGrid is launched, it s task appears in the task Window of the Task tab (visible only if you have the Tablet Manager running). The EasyGrid task will inherit the default settings from the Default Tablet mode previously set up. Finally, and to complete the installation and configuration, test the operation of the digitiser (without running EasyGrid ). The test is relatively simple and should be done on the Windows desktop: Test 1: Place the puck on the surface of the digitiser does it move the mouse pointer on the monitor screen when it moves? If it does, great, you have communication. Test 2: Does the pointer react as though the puck were a mouse i.e. If the puck is lifted off the active surface of the tablet to the extent that the pointer is no longer controlled by the puck (referred to as out of proximity) and then replaced on the tablet surface in a different position, does the mouse pointer reconnect or does it jump to a new position on the screen? If it jumps to a new position the driver is working in Absolute mode (not desirable) and requires to be reset (see previously about setting the driver for Relative mode). If it doesn t jump position it s working in Relative mode which is the desired mode. Test 3: Do the buttons react as Left Mouse (Primary click) and Right Mouse (Secondary Click) modes. This is tested by holding a button down and moving the mouse. A marquee should appear on the screen (if you are on the Windows desktop) if a left mouse button is held down and the puck moved, and a context (local) menu should pop-up on the screen when the button has been pressed and released. VTI Professional generic driver edition 6.12 for Windows 9x-XP It is assumed at all stages of the installation notes that no other digitiser drivers are installed on the computer. If a previous driver has been installed, this will require to be fully removed before installation of the new driver. Please consult the guide for your previous driver relating to uninstalling it from your system. If you are installing to a new computer drivers for a digitiser will not be present. In all instances, this guide relates to version 6.12 of the driver and although perhaps similar in appearance does not relate to any previous or subsequent versions of the Virtual Tablet Interface Driver. Please contact us for additional guidelines should you have a different version. There are two stages involved in the implementation of the driver: installing the driver from the disks supplied and configuring the driver. Using these instructions it is a relatively simple task and should be completed in approximately 10 minutes. The WinTab compliant driver is supplied on two 3.5 floppy disks and installation must be from the disks. Under the terms of the VTI Driver Licence the software can be loaded to one computer per purchased licence. If you wish to alternate your digitiser between several computers additional licences must be purchased. Copyright Visual Precision Ltd 1995-2009 3-25
