5 Overview Many of Omega Well Monitoring's gauges terminate with a LEMO or an Amphenol connector. The USB adapter is a hardware device manufactured in two configurations, as illustrated in Figure 1. The purpose of the adapter is to bridge communication between tools equipped with a LEMO or Amphenol connector, and the USB port on a computer. (For further information about software and installation instructions needed for Omega Well Monitoring equipment that plugs into the USB adapter, refer to the specific guide supplied with the tool.) USB driver software is required to allow communication between the adapter and the computer in the first place. These instructions and the files provided with the USB Driver Software installation program apply to Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7 and can support any of the following devices: USB Download Adapters Tension USB Interface SRO USB Interface Depth USB Interface A software wizard will guide you through the installation of the required program files and of the two USB drivers. Detailed installation procedures follow. NOTE: Omega Well Monitoring USB Drivers are labeled under the name, Canada Tech. The Canada Tech label will change in the near future to reflect the Omega Well Monitoring name. To avoid any confusion, all references made to the Canada Tech label refers to an Omega Well Monitoring product. CAUTION: You must have administrative rights to install software on the computer on which you want to add this USB Driver software; if you don't, the installation will fail. 24 3. Troubleshooting Guide Problem Solution 1. "I receive a message that the software is corrupt." or "The dog ate the CD." (Same as "I lost the CD.") 2. The installation failed. "Cannot Start this Hardware." If there are difficulties installing the driver, such as error screens or missing required files, go to the Omega Well Monitoring website and download an up- to-date version of the USB Driver Software. (Refer to the steps described in 1.1.A.) Re-trace your steps starting with 2. Removing the USB devices routine first. Once completed, repeat all the Installation Procedures. Remove USB Devices as explained in Section 2 and repeat all the Installation procedures. 3. "I plug in the USB Download Adapter" but nothing happens." The drivers are probably already installed; Check through the Device Manager; this is what you should see. If the list does not include the highlighted entries, USB Download Adapter, or USB Download Cable, and USB High Speed Serial Converter, proceed with all the steps outlined in 2.2 Removing USB Devices, and then repeat all the Installation Procedures. S R O S o f t w a r e O p e r a t o r s m a n u a l Page 21 of 26
25 4. "I plugged in the USB Download Adaptor and now my system is frozen. I can't do anything, not even move the mouse pointer!" 5. Everything is installed correctly, and now I've plugged in a memory tool, but when I'm using: ToolBox software to connect to the device, I get a "Cannot find tool - is tool properly connected message. Gateway software to connect to the device, I get a Communication Error message. What's wrong with my installation? Shut down the computer using the power switch. It appears that the device that you are plugging in while your system is live conflicts with something else already using the same resources. Next time, make sure that the USB Download Adapter is plugged in to the computer before you turn on the computer. (Also see no 5.) Our memory tools are designed to be backwards compatible with the oldest operating systems and as such function on COM ports 1 through to 9 only. During the installation process, by default the Wizard automatically assigns the next available port number on your computer to the newest USB device being installed. This number can be different for each individual installation, depending on the other devices already installed (printers, cameras, etc). If the port number assigned to the USB Download Adapter is equal to 10 or higher, the port number must be changed manually. If you have administrative rights on your machine, proceed as follows: (Otherwise, please contact your System Administrator.) 1. From Device Manager display the port number as explained earlier, 2. Right-click USB Download Adapter, select Properties. 3. Click the Port Settings tab, choose Advanced. 4. In the COM box, use the drop-down list to select an available port in the range of one through to nine inclusively. If all ports in that range are listed as "In Use" you will need to free one of them by re- assigning its current device to a port higher than 10 first, then repeat steps 1 through 4 above. (If you need further assistance to perform this advanced Windows task, consult the Windows online Help system.) S R O S o f t w a r e O p e r a t o r s m a n u a l Page 22 of 26
