ENGLISH FOR UNIVERSITY STUDY Home to students from over 140 countries, the University of Surrey is set in the heart of the English countryside, on a safe and beautiful lakeside campus in the pretty town of Guildford. It is just 33 minutes from Central London by train and close to both Heathrow and Gatwick International Airports. The Guardian University Guide 2015 positions the University of Surrey as 6th overall in the UK. With over 130 undergraduate degrees and 150 postgraduate taught programmes covering a range of subject disciplines, the University has an excellent academic reputation offering a wide variety of subjects and provides students with great potential for future success. The School of English and Languages The School of English and Languages, which is part of the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate taught degrees as well as a number of high quality English language programmes. Year-round full-time English preparation courses: October to June (10, 20 or 30 weeks) English for University Study is an English language preparation programme for international students whose first language is not English and who are intending to begin a degree at a British university. Students study for 21 hours a week and are placed in classes according to their level and needs. On all three courses students will receive individual support from administrative and academic staff including one-to-one tutorials. While most English for University Study students continue onto summer pre-sessional courses and degrees at Surrey, some choose to study with us before beginning degrees at other British universities. ENGLISH FOR UNIVERSITY STUDY English for University Study 1 and 2 English for University Study 1 and 2, starting in October and January, focus largely on language development in order to help you gain the IELTS score which you need to progress onto your degree or a summer Pre-Sessional course. Academic English and study skills which are needed on a degree course are also introduced. These cover areas such as presentation and discussion skills, longer academic essays, and listening and note taking skills for lectures. There is a combination of continuous and final exam assessment on both courses. English for University Study 3 English for University Study 3, starting in April, places a much greater emphasis on academic English and is therefore also suitable for students who already have the IELTS score they need for their degree course but who want to be well-prepared for their studies. As well as continuing to improve your general English level, you develop your research, critical thinking and academic writing skills in order to produce a longer fully referenced academic essay. There is continuous assessment throughout the course. SUMMER PRE-SESSIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMMES OVERVIEW Our Pre-Sessional English language programmes are designed as intensive English preparation for international students planning to study on a degree programme at the University of Surrey and who wish to improvetheir language skills, or for whom successful completion of a presessional course is a condition of their degree offer. Our programmes last 12, 8 or 5 weeks depending on your level of English language. If you attend and successfully complete any of the Pre-Sessional English language programmes, you will be able to progress directly onto your chosen University of Surrey degree without the need to re-take any external language tests. Our Pre-Sessional programmes help you to:» Begin your degree course with confidence» Research and complete academic assignments» Develop academic writing and study skills» Engage in critical thinking and independent learning» Improve language and fluency» Learn time management and other organisational skills» Participate in seminars and give presentations» Learn about university life at Surrey» Become familiar with all learning facilities Summer Pre-Sessional Courses include a varied social programme designed to help you settle into life at the University, make new friends and explore British culture. Examples of activities include:» Day trips to places of interest e.g. Brighton, Oxford, Windsor» Sporting activities» Cinema and theatre visits» Welcome and Farewell parties Summer Pre-Sessional English Language Programmes Entrance Requirements The Pre-Sessional course you should follow depends on your incoming language proficiency and the level you need to achieve for your chosen degree. The tables below indicate the length of Pre-Sessional study you need, based on the difference between your current IELTS level and the English language requirement for your degree course at the University of Surrey. Prospective students need to have fulfilled these requirements before the start of their course. They are designed to take students up to the level of English ability required by the University of Surrey. There is a combination of continuous and final exam assessment. Pre-Sessional 5 (PS5) This is an intensive programme in which students complete academic assignments and give presentations, have access to all University facilities and are able to learn how to make the most of their time at the University of Surrey. It is a great opportunity to ensure that you are fully aware of the requirements for success during your studies at Surrey even if you already have a high level of English. Pre-Sessional English for Management (PSEM) 5 Weeks PSEM is specifically designed for students going on to study any of the Masters level Management degrees at the University of Surrey. The major s of this programme are drawn from key Management areas such as Strategy and Marketing. In addition, you develop the necessary academic skills required to complete written assignments and reports as well as discussion activities and oral skills. GENERAL INFORMATION Accommodation University accommodation in self-catering, single study-bedrooms is available for summer Pre-Sessional students. However, you are strongly advised to apply early. Students on all 3 EUS courses should apply as soon as possible because accommodation is limited and in high demand. En suite (private bathroom) or standard (shared bathroom) is available, and up-to-date information about accommodation fees can be found on our web pages. Please complete the accommodation section of the application form. Alternatively, you can also arrange your own accommodation off campus.
