Master student recruitment at LMU Recruiting and Marketing - Non existence of tuition fees plays not an important role in recruitment activities (in LMU brochures not even mentioned) but there are some side effects : - The non existence of tuition fees attracts applicants whose main selection criteria is the cost of tuition need of stricter selection criteria in admission - And: in many cases demand exists without explicit recruitment activities (effect of existing tuition fees in competing countries?) - Effects are ambiguous ( avalanche of low quality applications) - No strategic regional distribution of applicants - Currently no real ongoing discussion about introducing tuition fees at LMU Slide 11
Master student recruitment at LMU actors and activities Recruiting and Marketing - Recruiting efforts mostly organized by coordinators within the departments using DAAD publications (https://www.daad.de/deutschland/studienangebote/internationalprograms/en/) and specialized fairs - Websites of the programs - Selection procedures: online application, interviews, tests - International Office project: Fostering English taught courses visibility measures Website www.lmu.de/international/etc and brochures - Complementary activities of the International Office within GATE activities (www.gategermany.de) and Bavarian Internationalization (www.study-in-bavaria.de/en) activities lately participating in postgraduate fairs in India, China, Latin America Slide 12
Recruiting and Marketing Language policy at LMU - English taught courses are not considered automatically international courses (English mot an sufficient condition to be called international) - English as language of tuition and as means of communication in university live is supported by central measures (see ETC project) - At the same time: there is no central (top down) strategy of introducing English as language of tuition for certain type of courses (i.e. Master Courses). Some aspects: - The variety of disciplines and courses (English is not adequate for all disciplines and levels) - Multilingualism is supported (using only English can not be considered as multilingualism) - German as academic language is still important in some disciplines as Philosophy, Law, German studies - Use of English at LMU is triggered by academic needs (reflected and sustainable) Slide 13
