HELSINKI - FINLAND World Design Capital 2012 Smart Choice!

Metropolitan Area Metropolitan Area Helsinki Espoo Vantaa Lahti

HELSINKI - The World Design Capital 2012 is growing rapidly. Helsinki Helsinki - Smart Choice! Helsinki will be the World Design Capital 2012. At the same time it will introduce major urban development projects. Sustainable urban planning and architectural design play key roles in this dynamic hub for international business. Consumer confidence in Finland is higher than the EU average and banks are forecasting faster growth for Finland than expected. This will contribute to a successful Design Capital year for Helsinki. For example, the world-renowned Art and Design City will unite design, media, and technology businesses in the Arabianranta shore district. Another important innovation, the Aalto University, merges economics, art, design, and technology. Design will also be a central element in the new urban developments. The development of shore, port, and railway yard areas will radically alter the city during the next decades. These areas of several hundred hectares, together with other major projects, will create 4.5 million m² of new residential floor area and almost 2.5 million m² of business premises, representing new homes for more than 100,000 people and jobs for tens of thousands. Suurpelto - Smart Living The Metro heads West Espoo Suurpelto is a new 325-hectare garden city for 10,000 residents. It is superbly located in the middle of Espoo with excellent traffic connections. An international campus will offer life-long learning, and shops, culture, events, and fitness will all have their place in Suurpelto. Innovative service concepts, such as an automated waste collection system and service halls for delivering daily consumer goods, have already been built. Over 600 homes are under construction and the first 300 citizens are already living in their new homes. Suurpelto will be completed around 2020. The Helsinki Metropolitan Area s Metro is set to continue from Ruoholahti via Otaniemi and Tapiola to Matinkylä in Espoo. Eight new stations will be built along the line: two in Helsinki and six in Espoo. Metro extension adds to area appeal The beneficiaries of fast and reliable public transport will include the business world, the area s inhabitants, and the student community. City traffic systems have a notable effect on urban structure and land use. The West Metro is expected to be a shot in the arm, not only for area s development, but also for mobility and the use of services along the route. The west metro in brief Length 13.9 kilometres 2 parallel underground tunnels, 8 stations Over 100,000 passengers a day 1,500 commuter parking spaces for private cars 2.5 5 minute train intervals Open for traffic in late 2015 Mr. Jussi Eerolainen Real Estate Department Tel. +358 50 594 2767 jussi.eerolainen@espoo.fi www.lansimetro.fi

Access the Next Generation Hub between East and West Vantaa The Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport is located in the City of Vantaa. The award-winning airport has the fastest flight connections between Asia and Europe via recently extended and passenger-friendly terminals. Located just north of neighbouring Helsinki, the Finnish capital, Vantaa is rapidly becoming Finland s international business hub. With the best possible location in Finland for fast, easy flight connections, the city will be further served when the Ringrail network becomes operative in 2014. Vantaa has invested 148 million euros in the Ringrail line, which will also connect the Helsinki Airport with downtown Helsinki. This line, with its Aviapolis station, will be the latest feather in the cap of the Aviapolis area the most attractive business location in Finland. Companies such as Kodak, Philips, GM, and Nike, just to mention a few, have already chosen to locate close to the airport. The Aviapolis area is a globally acknowledged example of how an airport can energise a regional economy. New office developments of 400 000 m2 are also being planned Marja-Vantaa, the future Urban Hometown residential area, is just 5 minutes by train from the airport. The largest new residential development in Finland, it will be home for 30,000 residents. It will also have over 26,000 jobs, in offices and large factories along the Ringrail. The City of Vantaa is also proud to present Finland s best corporate catering service. The service concept has been voted the best in Finland several times. Lahti Lahti Region Lahti The Lahti region is part of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The City of Lahti has more than 100,000 inhabitants and the province 200,000 inhabitants. The location of the Lahti Region is ideal in relation to southern Finland s population and business clusters; half the population of Finland lives within 2 hours of Lahti. The region s central location, close to the growing markets of southern Finland and Russia, provides a cost-effective business environment. The City of Lahti is urban but close to nature. It is also culture- and design-oriented, and is famous for its sports and laid back ambience. Five metropolitan cities, including Lahti, have been nominated by ICID to be the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012. The Lahti region has a solid foundation in the cleantech industry, thanks to extensive research facilities and a local concentration of cleantech companies. The city itself in- tends to cut carbon emissions with the help of the Green City project. Cleantech, mechatronics, the grain cluster, and the furniture industry are dominant sectors and strong points for the entire region; a comprehensive education system also makes it easy to find skilled employees. Turku city centre in focus the next step in the development of the Aurajoki waterfront will be a unique shopping quarter and leisure time area: The Fortuna block Turku The aim of the Fortuna block development project will be to create a commercial design hub in the heart of Turku; a unique shopping quarter that serves as a vibrant entertainment and recreational area, as well as a window into south-western Finnish know-how, culture and history. The redevelopment is closely linked to the general development of the Turku city centre and enhances its dynamic character. The block is a new, one-of-a-kind attraction for visitors in the vicinity of the Aurajoki River. The shopping centre planned for the block spotlights renowned international, Finnish, and especially regional craft and design businesses, products, and services. The Fortuna courtyard at the centre of the block will be a cultural trade area. The focus will be on local handicrafts and industrial art: design, including art textiles, ceramics and glass art, jewellers and clockmakers, craft shops, art galleries, as well as fashion, design, and gift shops. Various events will be arranged frequently in the block to bring added value for commercial interests. The development plan for Fortuna block has been drawn up by the property development company Saraco D & M Oy. To accomplish this, there are plans for many significant development projects in the very heart of the city. Tulli: An old warehouse area will create a great brownfield location for any new use. Underground parking: Favourable geological circumstances in Tampere s central area make constructing underground functions fairly easy and economical.
