Intermodal transport plays a key role, both in terms of transport and the environment, since it unites the strengths of each individual mode of transport to offer customers an even better and even more environmentally friendly overall product. In intermodal transport, cargo is transported by environmentally friendly rail on the main leg, and pre-carriage and onward carriage are handled by truck. DB Intermodal Services GmbH is a 100 % subsidiary of the Industry Sector Intermodal of DB Schenker Rail. As a specialist for complementary intermodal transport services, DB Intermodal Services provides essential on-site services along the maritime intermodal transport chain. Services include: Providing empty and loaded container depots (depot services) Offering delivery services (trucking) Operating transshipment terminals in Germany (terminal services) DB Intermodal Services offers its customers numerous pre-stacking and storage areas in the port hinterland for temporary storage of their freight. Renowned shipping companies and forwarders as well as important rail operators already benefit from the availability of storage and services without the investment risk. Through its new container storage concept for loaded containers, DB Intermodal Services also enables port transshipment operations and transshipment terminals to be more efficient. This is possible because load units are stored in hinterland loaded container depots instead of the usual transshipment facilities. In com - bination with our delivery services we can offer our customers better reliability and punctuality for their transports. DB Intermodal Services currently operates four trans - shipment terminals in Germany. To even better meet the needs of customers with an international focus, DB Intermodal Services has aligned its transshipment and service facilities with international traffic flows and now increasingly also offers these services in European countries outside Germany. Rail car and load unit management throughout Europe is another of the company s primary tasks for the Industry Sector Intermodal of DB Schenker Rail. DB Intermodal Services ensures that about 12,500 carrier cars Europe-wide are available in the right place at the right time according to customer requirements. We also offer customized solutions for loading equipment logistics. Our rail car leasing and management services are already available outside of Germany. How do empty and loaded container depots work? Attractive depot services Germany-wide Through its nationwide network of container depots, DB Intermodal Services offers its customers storage for empty and loaded containers close to the trans - shipment terminal. We offer an equivalent high level of quality, uniform billing of services as well as standardized depot reports at nine locations. On request, information can also be transferred directly to the customer s system using EDI. Another advantage is the standardized contract form within our network. In addition, central depot administration in Mainz ensures direct and standardized communication with our customers, giving us one face to the customer. Since 2008 we have also provided storage space for loaded containers in our depots. These loaded container depots relieve port terminals and transshipment terminals, which have limited storage capacity. The port industry, operators and end customers alike benefit from this service. When fewer load units need to be stored temporarily, the transshipment capacity of transshipment facilities increases. Storage near the consumer or producer also improves the punctuality of deliveries. At the same time, reducing the time forwarding companies have to wait to receive their containers boosts efficiency along the intermodal transport chain. 2. Transport The containers then travel by train from the ports to the hinterland. Trains on many routes reach their destination overnight. 4. Depot The depot is usually located in the immediate vicinity of the transshipment terminal. In addition to longer-term storage of containers, depots also offer other services such as container cleaning, repair and dispatching. Since both empty and loaded containers can be stored temporarily before they are delivered to the consignee or before they are transported to the port by rail, a distinction is made between empty container and loaded container depots. 4 1 Seaport terminal Depot loaded container 2 1. Arrival Cargo shipped in containers arrives at the port from abroad, e.g. from Asia. The cargo is transferred to rail at the port. Check-in Depot empty container 6 3 Maintenance and repair Transshipment station In addition to storing empty containers in empty container depots, DB Intermodal Services also offers temporary storage for loaded containers in loaded container depots. These depots free up storage space at ports and transshipment terminals. 3. Transshipment Once the containers arrive at the transshipment terminal, a crane transfers them to a truck, which then usually transports them directly to the consignee. When a depot is used, for example if the customer wants to receive the cargo a few days later, the loaded containers are first transferred by truck to the loaded container depot. 6. Returns Unloaded containers are returned by truck from the customer s site to the empty container depot, where they are stored on behalf of shipping companies. They can be retrieved for new transports to be loaded by customers or dispatched to other depot locations. 5. Delivery Once the customer is ready to receive the cargo, it is delivered by truck. The Trucking Department of DB Intermodal Services handles this service. Storage in close proximity to the customer essentially guarantees deliveries on time. 5 Customer In this way DB Intermodal Services makes rail-bound intermodal transport even more attractive and contributes greatly to achieving the corporate and environmental policy aim of reducing CO 2. A few DB Intermodal Services locations also offer storage for customs consignments transported in the DB Schenker Rail system by using the simplified transit procedure. In addition to reducing administrative work, this method saves the customer from having to pay for additional customs documents. We organize this service together with local forwarders, which allows us to provide our customers optimized and reliable transport service for the last mile based on extensive local knowledge. We keep special equipment like multifunction, gooseneck and explosion-proof chassis at our depot locations for rail operators, shipping companies and forwarders to ensure that containers are transferred safely from one mode of transportation to the next. International terminals we re there where our costomers are The focus of the Industry Sector Intermodal at DB Schenker Rail is to expand and improve the range of services on offer. Services also include further developing existing terminal locations and tapping new markets, which DB Intermodal Services does by developing and implementing innovative concepts for terminal locations abroad. Activities are already under way in Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Czech Republic, Italy and Spain, and more activities are already in planning. As part of a joint venture, Deutsche Bahn has also been involved in establishing 18 terminals and logistics centers in China since 2007. The various tasks related to international terminals are grouped and handled by a single source: DB Intermodal Services. This ensures that the infrastructure in the transshipment and depot area required for supporting the transport chain is available nationally as well as internationally, it meets the required standards and operations management corresponds to customer requirements. 10
