2 nd Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, New Delhi,2007.Nov.7 Japan- SAARC Special Fund Cooperation Program for Promoting Regional Initiatives for Regional and Sub-regional Cooperation on Disaster Risk Reduction Cooperation for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in the SAARC Region Koji Suzuki, Executive Director Asian Disaster Reduction Center Recommendation adopted in the International Conference on Japan-SAARC Cooperation held on July 31st, 2006 in Bangladesh with a financial support of Japan-SAARC Special Fund. Feasibility Study on Satellite Application on DRR Assess current status of hazard analysis, vulnerability mapping and risk assessment in each of the eight countries of South Asia Identify strength and critical gaps in infrastructure, resources and capacities in each country Develop common format of Vulnerability Atlas for South Asia Assess the technical, financial and human resources required for undertaking the study Assess time required for the development of the proposed atlas Recommend the most appropriate strategy for preparation of Digitized and Vulnerability Atlas Integrating Spatial Data on Physical, Socio-Economic and other related data Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge and Coping Mechanism of Different Communities Living in Multi- Hazard Zones of South Asia Select 3 countries from island, mountain and continent area in SAARC region. Collect the indigenous knowledge and coping mechanism against natural hazards. Review the applicability of the knowledge and mechanism to other communities with similar characteristics Document the selected indigenous knowledge and mechanism for dissemination 1

Provide Value Added Information for Disaster Risk Reduction (1) Associating additional data Satellite image alone sometimes could not give sufficient information for the diverse needs of disaster risk reduction. The combination of satellite information with GIS data, such as digital map, topographic data, elevation data, population distribution, etc. could be the solution. Thank you for your Attention (2) Applying damage assessment with satellite A damage assessment information after a large scale disaster would be very important for rescue and evacuation activities as well as recovery planning. 5
