Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan. A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is required for all staff and students unable to self-evacuate in an emergency. Provision for staff/students/visitors who are unable to selfevacuate is the responsibility of the organiser of the class/lecture/event/meeting. Disabled Access Guide for the Thomson s Land Building. This building has not been designed for, but has been adapted for the use of persons in wheelchairs, persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. Thomson s Land was built in 1930 as a school which had both primary and secondary departments. The Thomson s Land building now houses The Graduate School which was established to provide a focus for postgraduate education and to represent the needs of our postgraduate students. The School offers postgraduate students excellent library, computing and study facilities to the postgraduate body. Regular seminars and events help promote a stimulating research environment for students and academic staff. Location. The Thomson s Land building is located within the Holyrood Campus in central Edinburgh; this area is well served by public transport and is accessible by car. The building is within two miles of the city centre and four miles of the main halls of residence at Pollock Halls. The campus lies between The Canongate and Holyrood Road, about half a mile west of the Scottish Parliament Building. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city Centre. The nearest bus stops are located on The Canongate approximately 160 metres from the Thomson s Land building. Numerous bus services stop on The Canongate. Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from www.mybustracker.co.uk. Persons with mobility difficulties arriving by vehicle can access the Thomson s Land Building from Holyrood Road. Pedestrians can access the Thomson s Land Building from St John Street. Page 4.

Thomson s Land Building Location Map image. Please note that there is currently a single access route to the Thomson s Land Main Entrance. This route starts at an access point on St John Street. The route has a compacted gravel surface and incorporates short gradients. Page 5.

Parking. The Holyrood Campus has numerous parking bays but no free parking; all parking bays being permit or pay and display. Pay and Display Parking. The closest City of Edinburgh Council pay and display parking is available on St John Street. Please note that St John Street is on a steep gradient and offers limited dropped kerbs. See Location Map. Disabled Parking Bays. There are currently no disabled parking bays located within close proximity to the Thomsons Land Building. There is ample parking available on St John Street for disabled badge holders. Please note that St John Street is on a steep gradient and offers limited dropped kerbs. Parking bays located on St John Street image. University Car Parks. There are currently no University Car Parks located within close proximity to the Thomsons Land Building. There closest University Car Park is located to the rear of St Leonards Land. This car park has a smooth tarmac surface and an ample number of parking bays. See Location Map. If you do not hold a valid permit and require use of a University parking bay, it is recommended that contact is made with your host or the Transport & Parking Office prior to making your journey. Outside Access. Thomson s Land has a single entrance. Entrance 1. This entrance is located to the front of the building on a fairly level tarmac surface. Entrance 1 consists of a secure set of timber double doors. These doors lead to a small vestibule area with a recessed matwell and a set of automatic sliding double doors. The external doors open inward and remain open during normal building opening hours. All doors will permit the passage of a wheelchair. Please note that a swipe card is required to gain access to the building outside of normal opening hours. The swipe card point is located to the right of the external doorway and is above the recommended wheelchair accessible height. Entrance 1 image. Internal sliding doors image. Internal Access. There is ample manoeuvring space throughout the building and all corridors incorporate wide doors with door handles at a wheelchair accessible height. The majority of doors within corridors are held open to promote ease of access. Access to the Second Floor. Please note that there is no level access to the Second Floor of building. Access to the Second Floor is via the main staircase. Internal Ramps. There are two ramps located within the main corridor on the Ground Floor of the building. The ramps have a smooth vinyl surface and a moderate gradient. There is a rest stop between the two ramps but there are no contrasting surfaces or handrails. See Ground Floor Plan for location. Access to Old Moray House. There is internal access between Thomson s Land and Old Moray House on the Ground Floor. See Ground Floor Plan for location. Please note that there is no level access between the two buildings. The access point is located adjacent to the platform lift and consists of a narrow set of manual timber doors. These doors lead to a secure single width door and a flight of steps. All doors open inward and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. Old Moray House access point image. Access to Paterson s Land. There is access to the Paterson s Land Building from the Ground Floor of Thomson s Land. See Ground Floor Plan for location. Please note that there is no level access between the two buildings. The access route to Paterson s Land consists of three flights of stairs and a single width timber door. The stairs incorporate rest stops between flights, contrasting nosings on steps and a handrail to one side. The door at the base of the steps opens outward and incorporates door handles at an accessible height. Please note that this access point is not for public use. Staircase to Patterson s Land image. Reception. The Old Moray House reception is located to the side of Thomson s Land and serves the entire Holyrood Campus. Please note that the entrance to Old Moray House is currently only accessible via a gated archway from the Canon Gate. See Location Map. Access point from the Canon Gate image. The reception entrance is located to the front of Old Moray House on a shallow paved gradient. The entrance consists of a single width automatic sliding door and a set of external double doors. The external double doors are held open during normal building opening hours. The automatic door will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporates a raised threshold. The reception desk is within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user but it is currently not equipped with an induction loop system. Lifts. There is a single platform lift within the Thomson s Land Building. See Ground Floor Plan. The platform lift provides level access between the Ground and First Floors and remains active at all times. There is a small ramp leading to and from the platform lift on both the Ground and First Floors. Doors to the lift are operated manually and incorporate door handles at a wheelchair accessible height. Platform Lift image. Stairs. There are two staircases located within the Thomson s Land Building. See Floor Plans for locations. The main staircase is located within the main lobby and provides access to all floors. The second staircase is located adjacent to the platform lift and provides access between the Ground and First Floors. Toilets. Toilets are available on floors as follows: Standard Male and Female toilets are located on the Ground Floor. The accessible toilet is located on the Ground Floor. The accessible toilet incorporates the following: There is right hand lateral transfer space. There is limited manoeuvring space. There is an emergency pull chord. The door opens outwards. The width of the accessible toilet door is suitable for wheelchairs. There are suitable dropdown and support rails for transfer. The tap type is lever operation. There is no coat hook.
