Benjamin Van Loggem Foundation Studies, Bachelor of Architectural Studies I embarked on a holiday overseas, and during this time I had an opportunity to reflect on my goals and aspirations. I enjoyed my job as a landscaper as it had afforded me the opportunity to gain inspiration from some magnificent homes during various stages of the building process. On returning to Australia I made the decision to pursue my dream and study architecture. Without the skills taught at UniSA College I believe I would not have had the skills or confidence to complete my undergraduate degree.

Eventually I overcame my fears and opened up to a new way of study. My approach to life has changed since I came to study at university. Diploma in Allied Health a two year pathway program for people currently working in the allied health industry who are looking to become specialists in physiotherapy, podiatry or occupational therapy. Diploma in Arts a two year program providing a pathway into arts, communication and media, English and creative writing, history and cultural studies, Indigenous cultures and Australian society, international relations, journalism, linguistics, media arts, performing arts, product design, social science (human services), social work, sociology, visual arts and visual communication degrees. Diploma in Business a two year program providing a pathway into accounting, business, economics, finance, human resource management, logistics and supply chain management, management, marketing, sport and recreation, and tourism and event management degrees. Diploma in Science and Technology a two year program providing a pathway into environmental science, health science, human movement, information technology, laboratory medicine, medical science, nursing, nutrition and food sciences, pharmaceutical science, science and software engineering degrees. Diploma in Allied Health Program overview The Diploma in Allied Health provides a pathway into physiotherapy, podiatry or occupational therapy degrees for people who hold a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance and are currently working in a related field. Upon successful completion of the 2 year diploma, students will continue into the second year of a degree in physiotherapy, podiatry or occupational therapy at the University of South Australia, and may go on to be specialists in an allied health field. Foundation Studies Program overview University of South Australia Foundation Studies is a fee-free, one year program for students with no previous qualifications (student amenities fees may apply). Students learn the skills required for successful university-level study. On completion of the program, students can use their grade point average to apply for entry into a university degree or into the second year of a UniSA College diploma. What will I learn? Foundation Studies builds the skills students need to study successfully at a tertiary level. In the first semester, all students undertake general courses to develop their tertiary learning, computing and academic literacy skills. In the second semester, students complete introductory courses related specifically to their future undergraduate degree. Students can specialise in any area of interest, but must ensure to include any prerequisites for their future degree in their Foundation Studies enrolment. What can it lead to? Who is it for? There are no formal qualifications required for entry into the Foundation Studies program. However, applicants must: Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen Be at least 18 years of age before 1 February in the year of intended study for semester one entry, or before 1 July in the intended year of study for midyear entry Applicants who have previously studied at higher education level or completed a TAFE/VET award at Certificate IV or higher will not be considered for admission to this program. Foundation Studies completers have two options for further study. Students can apply for entry into a university degree or progress to a degree through a UniSA College diploma program. Option 1: A university degree Foundation Studies students receive a grade point average (GPA) out of 7, calculated by their average course results. On completion of the Foundation Studies program, students can use their GPA to apply for entry into a university degree. 1 Year Foundation Studies 1 st Year of Degree Option 2: A UniSA College diploma program Upon successful completion of Foundation Studies, students may also apply for entry into the second year of a diploma at UniSA College. This option provides students with additional support as they continue into an undergraduate degree. Fees The Foundation Studies program is fee-free. However, students are required to pay student services and amenities fees. The diploma programs are Commonwealth supported under the HECS-HELP scheme (details below). HECS-HELP How does HECS-HELP work? Australian citizens and holders of permanent humanitarian visas can defer payment of their diploma fees, until they are earning a specified salary (see When do I have to pay it back below). If students choose to defer payment for the full amount of their student contribution, they will not be required to pay any course fees upfront. However, students may be required to pay student services and amenities fees. How do I apply for HECS-HELP? Applications for HECS-HELP are made as part of the enrolment process once a student is accepted into the program. How much will my program cost? The program cost is determined by the Australian Government and is calculated based on the courses undertaken as part of the program. As per the Australian Government guidelines, the student contribution amounts for 2014 are: Band Fields of study 1 EFTSL 0.125 EFTSL Band 1 Band 2 Band 3 Humanities, behavioural science, social studies, foreign languages, visual and performing arts, clinical psychology, nursing and education Computing, built environment, health, engineering, surveying, agriculture, mathematics, statistics, science Law, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science, accounting, administration, economics, commerce $6,044 $755 $8,613 $1,076 $10,085 $1,260 Note: These amounts are for 1 equivalent full time student load (EFTSL) in 2014. The student contribution amounts for 2015 will be advised by the Federal Government in October 2014, and these will be available to view via unisa.edu.au at that time. When do I have to pay it back? Repayments must be made when the student reaches a defined minimum income threshold. For the 2013-2014 income year the minimum threshold is at approximately $51,309 per annum. Repayment is 4% of the student s taxable income for the minimum threshold and up to 8% of the student s taxable income for salaries above $95,288. Voluntary repayments can also be made. Student Services and Amenities Fees All university students may also be subject to Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF) as determined by the Australian Government. In 2014 these fees were capped at $281 per year. 18
UniSA Connect UniSA Connect engages with secondary schools and the community to inspire further study and educational attainment. Secondary school programs UniSA College utilises academic expertise to identify current and emerging Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ideas to develop interactive experiential workshops. Scenario based problem solving is used as a key approach in the programs, with authentic learning links for secondary school students. STEM workshops are delivered at UniSA s Mawson Lakes campus utilising specialised equipment and facilities. The UniSA Connect secondary school programs also connect with careers. The Career Awareness Program is designed to give secondary students (years 10-12) the opportunity to explore career options and pathways. Bookings To book into a UniSA Connect workshop visit unisa.edu.au/unisa-connect Community programs UniSA College partners with many community centres and organisations to run programs for members of the public. Collaboration with community centre staff allows UniSA College to develop working relationships to encourage their clients to re-engage with education and to promote UniSA College Foundation Studies and diplomas.
