Kid and Parent Friendly Content Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics Kindergarten English Language Arts Standards 1.0 Word Analysis I can point to the front cover, back cover and title page of a book. I can read words from left to right and top to bottom. I know that words make up sentences. I know that letters make up words. I can name all my capital letters. I can name all my lowercase letters. I know the sounds of letters. I can blend sounds to make words. I can rhyme words. I can find beginning, middle and ending sounds. I can track words and syllables. I can count the sounds in words and syllables. I can match sounds to letters. I can read words. I can sort words into groups. 2.0 Reading Comprehension I can find the title, table of contents, name of author and illustrator of a book. I can guess/predict what will happen next in a story. (e.g.- ight, -tion) I can read words with many syllables. I can read grade level material fluently, with expression. I can use antonyms (opposites), synonyms (words that mean the same), homophones (words that sound alike but have different meanings), homographs (words that look alike but are pronounced differently and mean different things) to help find the meaning of words. I can use specific words and explain how they relate (dog/mammal). I can use context clues within sentences to figure out new words. I can use the dictionary to learn about new words. I use prefixes and suffixes to find the meaning of new words. 2.0 Comprehension Structural Features of Informational Materials I can find information using a title, table of contents, chapter headings, glossaries, and indexes. I can ask and answer questions using things I already know, knowledge I learned or inferred from the story. I can find answers in the text. I can make and modify good predictions based on information from the text and recall major parts of the text. I can tell the main idea and details from nonfiction text. I can locate information in stories including problems and solutions. I can follow written directions with several steps. 1

3.0 Comprehension Literary Response and Analysis I know the common forms of literature (poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction). I understand basic story plots from stories around the world. I can understand what the characters are like by how the author writes about them. I can figure out the theme or author s message in fiction and nonfiction. I can recognize rhythm and patterns in stories (alliteration, onomatopoeia). I can name the speaker or narrator in a story. 4.0 Writing Strategies Organization and Focus. I can write a paragraph with a topic sentence and details. I write legibly in cursive with correct margins and spacing. I know how to use reference materials (dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, encyclopedia).
