WHAT IS Palazzo Strozzi? Palazzo Strozzi is a microcosm of the whole city and one of its finest expressions. Situated between Piazza Strozzi and via Tornabuoni in the heart of Florence, the Palazzo Strozzi is one of the finest examples of Renaissance domestic architecture. Commissioned by the Florentine merchant Filippo Strozzi, its foundations were laid in 1489 perhaps according to a design by Benedetto da Maiano. A year later the project was given to Simone del Pollaiolo, known as Cronaca, who worked on it until 1504 but the Palazzo was only finally finished in 1538. The Palazzo remained the property of the Strozzi family until 1937, and since 1999 it has been managed City of Florence on behalf of the Italian state. Since the Second World War the Palazzo has been Florence s largest temporary exhibition space. Among the major exhibitions held at Palazzo Strozzi have been The Peggy Guggenheim Collection (1949), 17th century Florence (1986), Cézanne in Florence (one of Italy s most visited exhibitions in 2007), Picasso, Miró, Dalí and Money & Beauty. Bankers, Botticelli and the Bonfire of the Vanities (2011). Both a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture and a living symbol of Florence s new Renaissance, Palazzo Strozzi is a dynamic cultural hub that hosts two major exhibitions 2

a year (such as its acclaimed Bronzino. Artist and Poet at the Court of the Medici exhibition in 2010), a café, a design bookshop, events and shows organised by the Centre for Contemporary Culture Strozzina, contemporary art installations in the Courtyard, concerts, conferences, performances, ballet and fashion shows. In addition to its lively programme of exhibitions and events, the Palazzo Strozzi approach is attracting worldwide attention for its family-friendliness, innovation and creativity. Every exhibition is labelled in English and Italian (with all exhibition texts of major exhibitions available also in Chinese and Russian), there are special labels and audioguides specially for families and children, interactive experiences as well as innovative workshops and kits to actively explore every exhibition. The Fondazione is the city s cultural laboratory, and develops creative new approaches to experiencing Florence s rich legacy, such as the iphone app Florence in your pocket, which guides visitors around the city to discover its hidden treasures using their smartphones. 4fotografia di Martino Margheri

THE fondazione Palazzo Strozzi The Fondazione, founded in Spring 2006 by the City of Florence, the Province of Florence, the Florentine Chamber of Commerce and an association of private partners (APPS), is an innovation on three different levels. At the level of governance, it is exceptional for the formal autonomy of its Board, and the inclusion on the Board of members nominated by both public and private sectors. Its business model is noted for its mix of public and private funding streams, and on its high percentage of earned revenue. Finally, at a cultural level, its approach of visible listening makes it an innovative experiment in sustainable cultural strategy, by inviting fresh new voices into the spaces of the Palazzo. The Palazzo Strozzi s goal is to be a laboratory for the city to experiment with ways to create new opportunities, new synergies and new collaborations.
