3 Population and Households Summary Usual resident population estimated at 220,338 (the 2001 Census found 198,020 people but was later found to have underestimated the population making direct comparison difficult). Most people (96.4%) live in households, but 3.6% of people live in communal establishments such as care/nursing homes or student halls of residence. This is the highest proportion in London and 23 rd nationally. (compared to 95.3% living in households in 2001, 4.7% in communal establishments). Overall sex ratio in Camden is 1.04 females to each male (compared to 1.08 in 2001). Population density of Camden is 101 persons per hectare (compared to 91 in 2001). The best comparison for the usual resident population is to compare the ONS mid- 2001 and mid-2011 estimates. The mid-year estimates show that Camden has grown by 8.6% between 2001 and 2011 (increasing by 17,500 from 202,600 to 220,100). KS101EW

Camden has a higher proportion of residents than Greater London and England & Wales between ages 18-44. England & Wales has a higher proportion of the population in the older age ranges from 60 years plus than Camden and Greater London. Camden's proportion of population is lower than Greater London and England & Wales between 0-17 years. Camden's population is closest in size to Inner London neighbouring Borough's of Westminster (219,396) and Islington (206,125). The percentage breakdown in Camden across the various age bands has stayed fairly similar to 2001 except in the age 18-19 band which has increased from 2.7% in 2001 to 3.3% in 2011 and 20-24 from 9.5% to 9.9%. The age band 25-29 has reduced from 13.1% to 11.8%. 5 Marital and Civil Partnership Status The majority of people aged 16+ in Camden (55%) are single (never married or in a Civil Partnership). This is the 6 th highest proportion in London and in England & Wales. (similar to 2001 when the proportion was 54%). Camden has the 6 th lowest proportion of married people (30%) in England and Wales (5 th lowest in London) but 4 th highest proportion of people in a civil partnership (1%) in England & Wales (3 rd highest in London). Camden has the 12 th lowest proportion of widowed people (4%) in England & Wales and London. Direct comparison with 2001 is not possible as 2011 Census figures include civil partnerships while the 2001 Census did not. KS103EW

Of residents living in couples, just over two thirds (68.7%) are married and just under one third (31.3%) cohabiting. Of residents not living in couples, almost three in four (72.8%) are single. Camden has the eighth lowest proportion of residents living in couples of all London boroughs and the sixth highest proportion of residents who are single. The living arrangements of Camden residents are very similar to those fond across Inner London. When compared with Outer London and England and Wales, a larger proportion of residents in those areas live in couples (52.9% in Outer London and 57.8% in England and Wales). Camden ranks in the bottom of local authorities in England and Wales for the proportion of residents who are married and living in a couple and in the top decile for the proportion of residents who are single. Comparison with 2001 data is not straightforward because, since 2001, since same-sex couples have become able to enter a civil partnership. These couples were counted alongside married residents in the 2011 Census. However, the overall proportion of Camden residents living in a couple has increased slightly, from 39.6% in 2001 (to 41.1% in 2011) and the proportion who are not has decreased from 60.4% (to 58.9%). The distribution of Camden residents who are not living in couple between different households within that group remains similar to that found by the 2001 Census, except for a decrease in the proportion of residents who are divorced (from 7.2 to 6.6%) and widowed (from 5% to 4%). 6

The proportion of single person households in Camden has decreased from 46.1% in 2001 to 40.6% in 2011. 25.6% of single person households comprise an individual aged 65 or over. This is higher than Inner London, lower than Outer London and England and Wales. 22% of all Camden's households contain dependent children, compared with Inner London's 22.6%, Outer London 33.9%, England & Wales 29.1%. Of households made up of one couple or family, 44.6% (18.9% of all households) include dependent children, slightly lower than Inner London's 48.9% or Outer London's 49.5%, but higher than 42.8%. A further 14.6% (6.2% of all households) include nondependent children. 64.1% of households that include a couple who are married or in a civil partnership include children (either dependent or nondependent), compared to 23.5% of households that include a couple who are cohabiting. 27.8% of households that include dependent children (including those classified as "other household types") are lone parent households. This is similar to Outer London's 25.4%, but higher than Inner London's 20.4% and England and Wales's 21.8%. Camden is ranked 29th in London and 208th nationally 9 Households where one person has a long-term health problem or disability 21,795 Camden households (22.3%) contain one or more persons with a long-term health problem or disability, similar to the Inner and Greater London averages. The majority of these households in Camden (18.3%) do not contain dependent children which though 7th highest in London is only ranked 284th in England and Wales. Lone parent households with dependent children 11 Key Findings There were 6,228 lone parent households in Camden, of these 400 were male (6.4%) and 5,828 were female (93.6%). Lone parents not in employment accounted for 3,193 (51.3%) of the total, of these 174 were male (2.8%) and 3,019 were female (48.5%). Compared to other households across England & Wales shows: Lone parent households not in employment in Camden 51.3%, Inner London 50.2%, Greater London 47.8% and across England & Wales 40.6%. There is a large gap between female lone parent households not in employment in Camden at 48.5% when compared to England & Wales at 37.4%. Looking at ranks: Camden is 5 th highest in England and Wales for female lone parents Comparing Camden lone parent households in 2001 to 2011 shows that the percentage of Male lone parents in part time employment has fallen from 11.3% to 1.3% and in full time employment from 36.9% to 2.4% whereas female lone parents in part time employment have increased from 14.8% to 25.1% and in full time employment fallen from 21.6% to 20.0%.
