2 3 Welcome address Welcome to the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlanen-Nurember and especially to the School of Enineerin. Since 1966 this community of enineerin departments has rown into a hihly-reputed centre of technoloical research. We continually develop, advance and interate new technoloy to meet the demands of society. Its five departments: Electrical, Electronic and Communication Enineerin, Chemical and Bioenineerin, Materials Science and Enineerin, Mechanical Enineerin, and Computer Science offer prorammes at Bachelor/Master level; PhD-prorammes are also available in all disciplines. Aainst the backround of a risin demand for internationalization and lobal cooperation in the field of enineerin sciences we have established a variety of international study prorammes in order to make studyin in Erlanen more attractive for youn enineers from around the world and to ive our students the opportunity to study and research in an international environment. A unique feature in Germany is the interation of our School of Enineerin into a traditional university, thus creatin a close-knit network of interdisciplinary collaboration at the very hihest level. 4 5 Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlanen-Nurember School of Enineerin Advance throuh Networks Enineerin Research Teachin The Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlanen- Nurember founded in 1743 with its 26.000 students and more than 400 professors is not only a major national and international player in Academia but also an important economic force in the reion. It is present in all fields of knowlede and science with a wide rane of interdisciplinary courses. The main focus in research and teachin is to be found in interdisciplinary collaboration between Natural Sciences, Enineerin and Medicine in close cooperation with the classical university disciplines. The lively dialoue between five schools, 22 departments and numerous subjects is the University s hallmark and inspired its sloan Advance throuh Networks. Hih-profile national and international awards as well as excellent placements in research rankins are proof of its research achievements. 9 collaborative research centres and 8 raduate research units which are currently sited at the University focus on biomedical, technoloical and natural-scientific fields. On the basis of funds awarded per professor, it ranks continuously amon the leaders for the hihly competitive and prestiious research fundin awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). 8 9 Chemical and Bioenineerin (CBI) Master of Science Chemical and Computational Bioenineerin (CBI) Enineerin (CE) Dr.-In. Chemical and bioenineerin represents the branch of the enineerin sciences which is concerned with the chemical and biochemical conversion of materials and the related technical processes and equipment. The teachin proramme in Chemical and Bioenineerin (CBI) leads consecutively to the derees Bachelor of Science (nominally 6 semesters) and Master of Science (nominally 4 semesters). About half the subjects in the Master proramme are tauht in Enlish, but some knowlede of German is very advisable. The interdisciplinary proramme allows specialisation in one of the fields Biotechnoloy, Technical Chemistry, Process Enineerin and Product Desin, and Thermofluid Dynamics. Possible fields of activity One of the main tasks of chemical and bioenineers is the implementation on a production scale of processes for material conversion developed on a laboratory scale by chemists and bioloists. Throuh the optimization of these processes they work to improve product characteristics and to reduce unwanted by-products and waste. Chemical and bioenineers are found not only in the chemical industry but also in the oil industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the food processin and beveraes industries, plant construction, the automotive industry, enery enineerin and the environmental protection sector. Chemical and bioenineers undertake hihly responsible jobs in the fields of research and development, production, plant desin, construction and operation, marketin and manaement. A ood backround in mathematics and computer prorammin are desirable. Candidates whose underraduate deree is not equivalent to the M.Sc. deree in Chemical and Bioenineerin may be required to take selected lectures or practical work in a preparatory course. A ood command of Enlish is essential and facility in German is recommended. German lanuae classes, if necessary, form part of the preparatory course and the main Ph.D. proramme. 10 11 Computational Enineerin (CE) Master of Science Computational Enineerin (CE) Dr.-In. Computational Enineerin Combinin classical German enineerin skills with hihperformance computin expertise. In addition to the traditional methodoloies of theoretical modellin and experimental exploration, simulation has become an important tool in applications from fundamental research to product development. The International Master Proramme in Computational Enineerin extends beyond classical German enineerin education and applied mathematics to prepare students perfectly for these new challenes. It is desined to allow students to pursue computer science studies toether with an enineerin field of their choice, the so-called Technical Field (TAF): Automatic Control Computational Optics Information Technoloy solid Mechanics and Dynamics Mechatronics Thermo-and Fluiddynamics The students et the basic interdisciplinary knowlede necessary for the computer-scienceorientated technical specialization. Do more et more : As an extension to the reular CE Master Proramme particularly excellent students will have the opportunity of joinin the Bavarian Graduate School of Computational Enineerin from the second semester. They will attend additional courses also at the Technical University of Munich and improve their soft skills to achieve the title Master with Honours within the framework of the Elite Network Bavaria (ENB). Double Deree: After one year of studies in Erlanen students have the possibility to achieve a double deree by studyin two semesters at the renowned Royal Institute of Technoloy (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. Possible fields of activity Simulation of technical processes, scientific visualization, process optimization, virtual product development, desin decisions, and so on. Applicants with outstandin derees in mathematics, computer sciences or in one of the Technical Fields offered in Erlanen are welcome, especially if they have interest in interdisciplinary research. Within the proramme s duration doctoral fellows are expected to present their research at national and international conferences, and to publish their research results in international journals. Due to the focus of this research towards applications, a variety of local, national and international companies and research institutions cooperate with departments of the Erlanen Faculty of Enineerin, e.. Siemens, Lucent, BMW, AUDI, Ericsson, Fraunhofer Institutes. Furthermore, PhD students are expected to participate in university teachin. The proramme includes German lanuae courses. Every PhD student will be assined to an individual supervisor responsible for the scientific aspects of the study. 12 13 Advanced Optical Technoloies (MAOT) Master of Science with honours Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technoloies (SAOT) Dr.-In. / Dr. rer. nat. Optical technoloy is central to scientific and industrial development in the 21st century. The Master Proramme in Advanced Optical Technoloies (MAOT) provides extensive trainin in all applied fields of modern optical technoloies. Erlanen is one of the leadin centres of excellence for optics and optical technoloies in Germany and the world. In addition to the MAOT, the PhD proramme SAOT in Optical Technoloies and the Max-Planck-Institute for Science of Liht is located in Erlanen. The application of optics in medicine is supported by an outstandin hospital infrastructure. Two Fraunhofer Institutes and the Bavarian Laser Centre complete the picture. The 2-year proramme covers six subjects: Optical metroloy Optical material and systems Optics in communication Computational optics Optics in medicine Optical material processin. Students are iven an introduction to all six topics and choose three as major subjects. In the interdisciplinary proramme, lectures are conducted by experts from physics, medicine, computer science and enineerin (electrical enineerin, mechanical enineerin, chemical enineerin). MAOT has its own teachin rooms as well as computer-equipped work stations for their students. Lectures are iven in small roups with a hih level of interactivity. The proramme is part of the Elite Network of Bavaria. MAOT cooperates closely with the SAOT which is located in the same buildin and which has brand new lab facilities. Master and PhD students work toether in classes or in research roups with the SAOT main supervisors. A doctoral proramme starts typically with a course on Fundamentals of Optical Technoloies. Each doctoral student chooses then three of the six application areas metroloy, material processin, medicine, communication and information technoloies, materials and systems or computational optics to acquire broad knowlede in the area of optical technoloy. A research thesis project in one of these fields under the supervision of a SAOT mentor completes the requirements for the doctoral deree. Durin the proramme doctoral candidates have the opportunity to attend academies which foster intensive team work in the solution of optical problems. A credit point scheme encouraes not only the participation in these academies but also the attendance at scientific conferences, workshops and lectures, the publication of scientific papers and the acquisition of soft skills. Research at the SAOT can be undertaken in cooperation with three leadin research centres in Erlanen: the Bavarian Laser Centre, the Fraunhofer Institute of Interated Systems and Device Technoloy and the Max Planck Institute of Optics, Information and Photonics. 14 15 Advanced Materials and Processes (MAP) Master of Science with honours Systems of Information and Multimedia Technoloy (SIM) Master of Science with honours The new curriculum Advanced Materials and Processes at the University of Erlanen is at the cuttin ede of modern breakthrouh technoloies. The contributin institutions belon to the leadin universities in the field. It provides the unique opportunity to couple products with processes for novel and economical production. The interdisciplinary elite Master proramme Advanced Materials and Processes (MAP) is situated between Materials Science and Chemical/Bioenineerin. Dependin on their previous studies students acquire individually composed basic knowlede for the focal subjects durin the first semester. From semester two the students choose two out of four focal subjects: Advanced Processes Biomaterials and Bioprocessin Computational Materials Science and Process Simulation Nanomaterials and Nanotechnoloy The proramme has a remarkably hih proportion of practical and project work. Furthermore the proramme is complemented by various soft skills seminars. In these seminars students learn key competences reardin economics, manaement and self-development. 12 weeks of industrial internships secure important insihts into potential career paths as well as cuttin-ede issues in research and development. The University of Erlanen-Nurember (FAU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) which are hihly respected in information and multimedia technoloy have set up an elite co-operation project includin a well-known Fraunhofer Institute within the framework of the Elite Network of Bavaria. The Master study proramme is based on Bachelor and diploma proramms at FAU and TUM with focus on information and communication technoloy. 16 17 Excellent support for excellent students Important to know Elite Network of Bavaria Best possible support of outstandin talents at Bavarian universities In 2004 the overnment of Bavaria in cooperation with the Bavarian Business association launched a proramme with the aim to support youn academic talents. Nearly all of the international Master prorammes at the School of Enineerin belon to this Elite Network of Bavaria: Advanced Optical Technoloies Advanced Materials and Processes Bavarian Graduate School of Computational Enineerin Systems of Information and Multimedia Technoloy The Elite Network of Bavaria provides ideal conditions for hihly qualified students The special study prorammes entail a remarkably hih part of practical courses (e.. project work). In addition the students are offered soft skill courses in which they learn key competences reardin economics, manaement and personal trainin. Students are also invited to attend summer or winter academies respectively. The courses offered in those academies vary from specific subject related courses to soft skill workshops. The elite proramme runs in parallel to the normal study proramme. Successful students are awarded a Master with honours deree. The Excellence Initiative aims to strenthen science and research in Germany in the lon term, improve its international competitiveness and raise the profile of the top performers in academia and research. Graduate schools such as SAOT at the School of Enineerin serve as an instrument of quality assurance in promotin youn researchers and are based on the principle of trainin outstandin doctoral students within an excellent research environment. Clusters of excellence as the Enineerin of Advanced Materials at the School of Enineerin will strenthen German university locations to establish internationally visible, competitive research and trainin facilities, thereby enhancin scientific networkin and cooperation amon the participatin institutions. (www.eam.uni-erlanen.de) Tuition Fees Tuition fees in Germany are comparatively low. The University Erlanen-Nurember currently (2009/2010) chares 542 per semester. However, Ph.D. students do not have to pay tuition fees for up to six semesters. All university facilities can be used by students free of chare. Exams are free of chare as well. Some specific lanuae courses need to be paid for separately. Scholarships The FAU does not have a eneral scholarshipscheme. However, some of the study prorammes presented in this brochure may offer scholarships (e.. SAOT, MAP, CE, MAOT). The German Academic Exchane Service (DAAD) offers scholarships for international students (http://www.daad.de). Support with first steps in Erlanen The international courses provide special support for the students first weeks in Erlanen. They will assist you e.. with accommodation, reistration or insurances. Additionally the International Office of the School of Enineerin and the Central Office for International Affairs are open for all questions of students from abroad. 18 19 Livin in Erlanen and Nurember School of Enineerin Map of the Campus Work- Life - Balance Erlanen, a town of about 100,000 residents, is situated in in the Franconian reion of Bavaria in southeast Germany. The baroque city centre was built around a manor house (Schloss) with an extensive arden ( Schlossarten ) which is nowadays the domicile of the central university administration. Erlanen is economically dominated by two major entrepreneurs: the Friedrich Alexander University with its university hospitals and the lobal corporation Siemens. Accessibility Erlanen and Nurember can easily be reached by train. There is also an international airport in Nurember. Culture A wide variety of cultural events is offered in numerous cinemas, theatres and the town hall of Erlanen. Especially worth mentionin is the biennial Comic Salon where internationally renowned comic artists have a et-toether, the Lon Niht of Sciences with a hue proramme of lectures and shows throuhout Erlanen, Fürth and Nurember, and, of course, the beautiful Schlossartenfest, an annual black-tie festivity of the university. At Whitsun the famous fair called Berkirchweih attracts thousands of people with music and entertainment. Due to its reater size and its historical backround Nurember disposes of an even bier cultural offerin. The castle above the historical city centre, the Nurember Playhouse, the Opera and the National Museum (amonst many others) are always worth a visit. Those who are more interested in the recent historical backround of the city are stronly advised to visit the Documentation Center. Some of the major annual events in Nurember are the internationally famous music festival Rock im Park, the Blue Niht with a vast variety of music, cabaret and arts, and the Tucher Medieval Games in the historical moat. Visitors who come durin the winter time should, of course, pay a visit to the world famous Christkindlesmarkt durin the Advent season. Leisure time activities Sport clubs, swimmin pools, tennis and squash courts and further sport facilities complete the leisure time possibilities. The university offers its own university sports and music proramme for all students and staff of the university. Moreover, the cities of Erlanen and Nurember with its bars and clubs as well as shoppin malls allow for a reat student day and nihtlife. Traffic The favoured vehicle especially for students is the bicycle that has attracted many fans in this level, bike-friendly town. However, there is a very ood bus network as well. Vicinity Situated to the south of Erlanen and Nurember is the Franconian Lake District with numerous water sport possibilities. The university offers its own sailin facilities there. To the north there is Bamber, a World Heritae Site of the UNESCO.
