Strategic Vehicle Research and Innovation (FFI) Collaboration for strategic vehicle research and innovation Eva Schelin, Programme Director FFI, VINNOVA Sweden s innovation agency Nearly 100 million per year will be invested in Swedish vehicle research and innovation within FFI.
FFI is a partnership between the Swedish government and automotive industry for joint funding of research, innovation and development concentrating on Climate & Environment and Traffic Safety. FFI FORDONSSTRATEGISK FORSKNING OCH INNOVATION VINNOVA.SE/FFI

FFI Energy & environment Adaptation of the transport system is crucial if we are to reduce emissions of exhaust gases and combat other environmental problems. Initiatives include such things as energyefficient vehicles with lower environmental impact, drivetrain systems for renewable fuels and electric power, plus new business and socio-economic models.
FFI Transport efficiency Safe and reliable travel and transportation for members of the public and industry requires efficient and sustainable utilisation of vehicles and infrastructure. The programme promotes cooperation between different forms of transport on logistics and control of personal and goods transportation, various services concentrating on vehicles, plus technological development and improved vehicular concepts. 1994 2011 Environment as core value emerges. Environment is established as core function. CO2-neutral plants. Emissions according to Euro 1. NOx 8,0 and PM 0,36 (g/kwh). Emissions according to Euro V. NOx 2,0 (-75%) and PM 0,02 (-92%). SCR established. Fuel consumption 3,2 l/10km (for a typichal 40-tonne truck). Fuel consuption 2,7 l//10kml (-16 %). Transportlösningar* för ytterligare 20 % lägre CO2utsläpp. Traditional combustion engine. Traditional combustion engine + hybrid operation. Engines capable of many alternative fuels; DME, bio gas, metan-diesel, bio-diesel. Good basic crash properties. Improved basic crash properties. Active safety systems, e.g. lane keeping, fatigue warning, lane change support. Active collision warning Basic road properties. Examples of FFI-funded projects
Energy & environment SEVS - Safe Electric and hybrid novel VehicleS The purpose of SEVS is to explore how safe, efficient and affordable future vehicles should be designed and what research needs to be performed, with special focus on safety and energy consumption. Findings of project: It is technically possible to reduce both energy consumption as well as fatalities and severe injuries by 80%. Project partners: Chalmers, SAFER, SHC, Lunds universitet, KTH, Volvo, Scania, Saab, Autoliv, VTI, SP, Swerea sicomp. FFI FORDONSSTRATEGISK FORSKNING OCH INNOVATION VINNOVA.SE/FFI
FFI Energy and environment Electric car for city traffic The Electric Cars for City Traffic project was funded by FFI. Volvo Cars developed an electric car to serve 90% of day-to-day transport needs for a normal commuter, with very low CO2 emissions and high traffic safety. Prototypes have been developed within the project.
Transport efficiency Longer and heavier vehicle combinations The amount of timber transported on each vehicle combination needs to be increased to reduce CO2 emissions. This can be achieved without higher road damage or decreased safety. In the VETT-project a new modular system with vehicles and trailers is developed. Results so far show decrease of CO2 emission by 20% per tonne km transported wood. Resultat hittills visar att CO2 utsläppen minskat med än 20 % per ton km transporterat virke Foto: Per Pettersson FFI FORDONSSTRATEGISK FORSKNING OCH INNOVATION VINNOVA.SE/FFI
