The Mercedes-Benz Econic NGT Conservation of Natural Resources
Clean, economical, reliable Sustainability and the conservation of resources have long been part of the corporate philosophy at Mercedes-Benz: whether in Stockholm, Athens, Prague, Valencia, Paris or Berlin our environmentally friendly Econic NGT has been in successful international operation since Whether with fossilbased natural gas or biogas the Econic goes well beyond the required standards and ensures clean, environmentally friendly operation in densely populated areas. Stockholm Prague Athens Advantages Mercedes-Benz Econic NGT* Certified in accordance with the EEV emissions standard Effective avoidance of fine dust and particulate emissions 50 % lower noise emissions * versus Truck with diesel engine Freedom to operate in low emission zones and areas where operating bans apply Significantly lower fuel costs Image-builder thanks to high ecological compatibility Reduction or elimination of congestion charging costs, Toll Collect, etc. The Econic NGT is not only able to operate on conventional natural gas in compressed form (CNG Compressed Natural Gas), but also on regenerable biogas as well as liquefied natural gas and biogas. Without any engine modifications what s o ever.
Paris Berlin LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)* LBG (Liquefied )* Econic Hybrid Technology CO 2 -neutral No fine dust and particulate emissions Use of renewable raw materials Great operating range Lower payload penalty Optimised installed volume CO 2 -neutral Extended operating range Lower payload penalty Our research continues: the Econic BlueTec Hybrid with a combination of diesel and electric drive and the Econic NGT Hybrid, which combines natural gas drive with the advantages of an electric motor, is already undergoing operational trials. * versus CNG
as a sustainable fuel Natural, inexpensive and CO2-neutral The technical and economic possibilities of biogas as a sustainable, inexpensive and environmentally compatible drive system in the energy mix have so far remained almost completely unexploited and this represents a potential for our future! All fermentable waste materials are suitable for the production of biogas, for example sewage sludge, biological waste products, agricultural fertilizers and plants or parts of plants that have previously been unused. Many of the raw materials are basically available free of charge, and the average methane content of 95 % generated during fermentation, then refined, makes biogas high in energy and suitable as a CO2 -neutral fuel for all vehicle drive systems. The advantages of biogas: Waste to fuel: Biomass is turned into a CO2 -neutral fuel, saving costs and protecting the environment CO2 -neutral Biomass/Biowaste treatment plant plant (Cleaning and compression of gas; methane content 95 %) (Crude biogas is won by biomass fermentation) CO2 -neutral Cost saving Use of renewable, local raw materials Very low noise: also ideal for night-time operations Fuel costs reduced by up to 50 % Waste disposal, logistics & Urban distribution Freedom to operate in low emission zones and areas where operating bans apply filling station Advantages in vehicle tax, TollCollect, road tolls etc. High image value
The gas-powered Econic Up to 50 % lower fuel costs in day-to-day operation It makes economic sense: the gas-powered Econic combines the technical expertise of Mercedes-Benz with large-scale series production methods and an environmentally friendly drive technology. With a gas drive system, which is much more environmentally compatible compared to diesel drive, the Econic contributes to active environmental protection while producing very little noise another important factor in urban operations, at night or in the early morning. Gas drive systems also offer considerable savings potentials: with considerably lower fuel costs and significant savings in vehicle tax by virtue of low CO 2 emissions. Further developments in the combustion technology of the Econic s gas engine have not only improved start-off characteristics and performance, but also lowered fuel consumption. Practical example: Municipal utility (Speyer/Germany) Econic NGT with EEV certification 50 % lower fuel costs 50 % lower emissions Diesel (at EUR at public filling stations) Fuel costs/100 km EUR EUR Annual fuel costs* 27,500 EUR 14,000 EUR Compressed Natural Gas (at 0.89 EUR at public filling stations) Particulate matter (PM) [g/kwh] Euro 5 (0.03/2.0) EEV (0.02/2.0) Econic NGT (0.004/1.94) Euro 4 (0.03/3.5) Low emission ZONE Total annual savings: 13,500 EUR (by CNG compared with diesel) * A waste collection vehicle covering 25,000 km per year on average Nitrogen oxide NO x [g/kwh] Econic NGT with EEV certification: natural gas produces virtually no particles or fine dust. The Econic with natural gas drive already betters the Euro 5 and coming Euro 6 particulate limits, as well as the EEV limit. Other pollutants such as CO (carbon monoxide), CH 4 (methane) and NMHC (chlorinated hydrocarbons) have been reduced to a minimum.

Shaping Future Transportation The road to the emission-free commercial vehicle We wish to safeguard mobility as a basis for social development for future generations, by making it as sustainable and safe as possible. We have consolidated our efforts in this regard into the initiative Shaping Future Transportation. This guiding theme means conserving resources, reducing emissions of all kinds and at the same time ensuring the greatest possible traffic safety. With efficient, clean drive systems and alternative fuels, we are on the road towards the emission-free commercial vehicle and sustainable mobility. Evidence of our success with this strategy is already on the roads all over the world: more than 10,700 Daimler trucks and buses with alternative drive systems are in operation with customers.
