2 Fuel cells in Sweden There is not any official fuel cell or hydrogen program in Sweden. A typical bottom-up approach Two parallel small fuel cells programs - The stationary fuel cells program initiated by utilities and Elforsk - MISTRA fuel cells for transport mainly PEFC lead by Volvo Both programs have been running for more than 10 years and the subsidies from the Swedish Energy Agency is about 1-2 M per year and the private Industry about 2 M per year Under discussion is a new National Fuel Cell Centre financed and operated by the Swedish Energy Agency, Universities and private companies

3 Fuel cells in Sweden A new program is under development, there is a strong growing interest from several small an large industries Main focus - Export industry, fuel cells, cells, stacks, system, components, materials - Biofuels for stationary fuel cells - APU for trucks, APU for telecom other off-grid and island applications etc 1. The program in Sweden has not yet defined any penetration of fuel cells 2. We have calculated a 10 % reduction of GHG-emissions in Sweden if we have a significant penetration of FCV and buses 3. Obstacles; the drivers for fuel cells are not strong enough, energy prices are still low, the utilities are not really interested 4. The program have to focus on Swedish niche markets and the export industry

5 The official climate vision in Sweden Sweden shall not have any net emissions of GHG year all fossil fuel for heating will be terminated 2030 Sweden transport fleet should be independent of fossil fuels Goals for % renewable energy 10% renewable transport fuels 20% more efficient use of energy 40% reduction of greenhouse gases

6 Swedish Centre of Competence for Fuel Cell Technologies Public Private Partnership financed by the Swedish Energy Agency, the industry and the universities The vision is to contribute to a sustainable society, to create competence and knowledge and strengthen the industry in Sweden, promote international cooperation etc Among the targets are Produce PhDs with fuel cells expertise International leadership in niche areas Create the conditions for a major reduction of GHG emissions Start 2010 in full operation 2012 research part 3 M per year in addition demonstration projects
