Name of Activity: Addition and Subtraction Flashcards using Microsoft PowerPoint Description of Activity: Addition and Subtraction Flashcards: Using PowerPoint, students will create a set of flashcards using simple addition or subtraction facts. This lesson may be adapted for Vocabulary Flashcards. Student Portfolio Work Sample: Slide Sorter View, showing all completed flashcards, either printed or saved to the grade level share drive. Core Curricular Area: Math State Standards: Number Sense 1.1 2.3 Information Literacy Standards: Resources: None Lesson: Pre-activity: Students will create a list of addition or subtraction facts which they will take with them to the computer lab. Computer-based activity: 1. Students will need to take a copy of Microsoft PowerPoint Student Directions and the list of addition or subtraction facts that were created in class. 2. Direct students to open Microsoft PowerPoint by going to the START button. 3. Click CREATE A NEW PRESENTATION 4. Students will type the content of their slide show in OUTLINE form first. 5. Click OUTLINE Click here This will appear Push ENTER to get a new slide. Grade Level: 2 Page 1 of 5

6. Once students have typed in their text, they can click on the slide and begin to format (change) the font size, color, position, etc. Click here to change fonts, backgrounds, etc. 7. To view slide show go to SLIDE SHOW in the tool bar and click VIEW SHOW. 8. Pushing the SPACE BAR will advance the slides. 9. Pushing ESC will take the students out of the slide show and back to the screen where they can edit their slides. Grade Level: 2 Page 2 of 5

10. To delete unwanted slides go to EDIT in the tool bar and click DELETE SLIDE. 11. TO PRINT Go to VIEW in the tool bar and click SLIDE SORTER This changes the view so all slides will be on one page. Go to FILE in the tool bar and click PRINT. When the print box appears, click OK. Saving Student Work: 1. Under the tool bar select File. Scroll down to Save As. The Save As window will open. Save student work to 3 ½ Floppy (A:) or to the appropriate folder on the grade level share drive. Make sure that the correct choice for saving work is visible in the Save in window. 2. Type the title of the project in the File Name box and click Save. 3. Either print out a copy of each student s project or save the project to the grade level share drive or floppy disk as a portfolio activity entry. Grade Level: 2 Page 3 of 5

4. To print, locate and press File. Choose Print from the drop down menu. The print window will open. Check to make sure that the correct printer is selected and click on OK. 5. When the green light turns off and you have closed down the program, eject the disk.
