1 Display Zipped Files within D2L Content Window Some presentations (lectures, interactive exercises etc.) may need to be uploaded into Desire2Learn as zipped files, such as narrated Microsoft PowerPoint files. In these cases, faculty members usually work with the Academic Technology Team to use a compression tool, such as ispring to create the zipped file. Follow these steps to display the presentation within the D2L content display area. 1. BEFORE going into Desire2Learn prepare the slide presentation files by following these steps. a. Use the ZIPPED output from ispring, or zip the files yourself. b. To zip the files yourself, be sure you have access to a set of THREE files for each slide presentation. When PowerPoint is compressed and exported by ispring, there are three files produced as shown below. Note that the large file is the Flash SWF file that holds the content. All three files, however, are needed to play properly on the web. Do not delete any of the files. The HTML file points to the Flash SWF file and the standard jar file facilitates web display. c. Select all three files. Right click and Send to Compressed (zipped) folder d. See a zipped file in the directory. [email protected] Fall 2013, v
2 2. Now you are ready to work within Desire2Learn to first upload the files. Inside your course, go to Edit Course and click the Manage Files link from the list of tools. 3. Create a NEW FOLDER for EACH presentation. Click the New Folder icon and give the folder a name. *This step is highly recommended so that all zipped files can be UNZIPPED within a folder for clarity in the choice of files later in the process. 4. Select the new folder you just created. 5. When it opens it will be empty. Click Upload. 6. Browse to upload the ZIPPED file you prepared earlier. NOTE: You need to prepare a zipped file for EACH of the ispring presentations. 7. Click the Upload button and find the zip file you have saved on your computer and click Save. Wait for the file to upload completely. This may take a few minutes for larger files. See the zipped file listed after it has fully uploaded: [email protected] Fall 2013, v
3 8. Unzip by hovering over the zipped file (do NOT click the file link!) until the dropdown menu arrow becomes visible at the right. Click the dropdown arrow and select Unzip from the menu. 9. Wait for the file to unzip and then see the three files display, as well as the original zipped file. NOTE: Later you may want to delete the zipped file, but keep it until you have set up the presentation fully and verified it displays correctly. 10. Continue to upload any other zipped presentations that will be used in the course. REMNDER: Use a separate folder for each zipped file to uploaded into. NOTE: You are strongly encouraged to create a Viewing Instructions page that displays immediately before the recorded slide presentation. 4 Loading the Presentation 1. Select the module where the presentation is to be viewed. Click New > Add Course Files. 2. Select the correct presentation folder. Click the folder link. 3. See all the files within the folder. Click the check box next to the HTML file and click Add Fall 2013, v
5 REMOVE ZIPPED file(s) from the Manage File area to save storage space. Removing Zipped Files from the D2L Course Files After checking to see that the presentation file plays properly within the D2L display area, return to Manage Files to remove the zipped file. This saves valuable storage space within D2L. 1. Click the presentation folder to view all files within. 2. Click the dropdown arrow at the right of the file name. Select Delete. 3.
