UCON-UART Documentation l 1 UCON-UART USB to Serial TTL-level UART converter board The INEX UCON-UART board is a small development tool based on the FT232RL USB to Serial UART interface chip. INEX created this tool in order to provide microcontroller developers to have easy access to a PC s USB port using the FTDI virtual device drivers. This tool is also a reference design for customer-based applications using the FTDI chip in-circuit. 1. Features Based-on FT232RL USB to Serial TTL-level UART converter chip Single chip USB to asynchronous serial data transfer interface. Entire USB protocol handled on the chip - No USB-specific firmware programming required. UART interface support for 7 or 8 data bits, 1 or 2 stop bits and all parity. Fully assisted hardware or X-On / X-Off software handshaking. Data transfer rates from 300 baud to 3 Megabaud (RS422 / RS485 and at TTL levels) and 300 baud to 1 Megabaud (RS232). 256 byte receive buffer and 128 byte transmit buffer utilising buffer smoothing technology to allow for high data throughput. Full UART pin configuration includes TxD, RxD, DTR, DSR, RTS, CTS, DCD and RI Get power from USB bus and supply power to external not over 100mA Jumper to select the logic level between +3.3V and +5V Interface with any microcontroller to communication iwth computer via USB port. Support the Virtual COM port. Programmer can create the popular visual programming tools such as Visual BASIC, Visual C or Borland Delphi. The latest driver can download from http://www.ftdichip.com

4 l UCON-UART Documentation 3. Driver installation 3.1 Insert your UCON-UART CD-ROM into your computer 3.2 Connect your USB cable to your computer and another end connect to UCON- UART board. 3.3 During your first installation, WinXP may not be able to recognize the UCON- UART device. You will see the below screen and select No, not this time from the options available and then click Next to proceed with the installation. 3.4 Computer will detect the new hardware and request the driver installation. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and then click Next. Select Search for the best driver in these locations and enter the file path in the combo-box or browse to it by clicking the Browse button. Once the file path has been entered in the box, click Next to proceed.
UCON-UART Documentation l 5 3.5 The following screen will be displayed as Windows XP copies the required driver files. Click Finish button to finish the fisrt driver installation. 3.6 After that is USB Serial Port driver installation and request the driver installation again. Do same step 3.4 and wait until the installation complete. Click Finish button.
6 l UCON-UART Documentation 4. Verify the virtual COM port installation 4.1 Open the Device Manager (located in Control Panel\System then select the Hardware tab and click Device Manger ) and select View > Devices by Connection, the device appears as a USB Serial Converter with an additional COM port with the label USB Serial Port. 5. Testing with Hyper Terminal The testing is loop back. By connect TxD with RxD pin. It means sending data from TxD and back to computer via RxD pin. Connect TxD and RxD point together Note : 10-pin female and male header connector do not solder on board. User must fit with yourselves (all connector are bundled in the set). Hyper Terminal is serial communication terminal program. Normally it is installed with Window together.
UCON-UART Documentation l 7 5.1 Select the communication port. 5.2 Set the serial communication format. The default is 9600 8N1. It means Baudrate is 9,600 bit per second, 8-bit data, No parity and 1-bit stop. 5.3 The terminal window will appear. data by type data from your keyboard. All character would be display on terminal window. See the figure below. 5.4 All time of data treanfer, LED at RxD and TxD will blink followig transfer data. INNOVATIVE EXPERIMENT
