Dresden Express 16 template ruler Cutting mat and rotary cutter Batting Quilt finished size: 60 x 60 At the Cutting Table: 1. Cut 7 strips from each of the two fabrics. 2. From each of the 7 maroon and gold fabrics, cut an assortment of 64 panels from the Dresden Express ruler. Cut 32 pieces from each of the two fabrics. Option: Fussy cut the fabric to maintain the pattern within the fabrics. 3. Round off the top of each of the pieces so that the finished look will have a scalloped edge. 4. From the gold print fabric, cut 4 sections that measure 20½ x 20½. 5. From the gold print fabric, cut 8 strips across the width of the fabric 3½ wide. (From the strips cut 12 sections 25 long). 6. From the burgundy floral print, cut 8 strips across the width of the fabric 3½ wide. 7. Cut 9 sections from the burgundy floral print that measure 3½ x 3½. 8. Cut 2½ wide bias strips to fit around the quilt from the burgundy print. Assembly: All seams will be ¼ unless otherwise specified. 1. With right sides together and using a ¼ seam, sew 16 of the panels together to form a scalloped circle. Make 4 scalloped circles. 2. Using temporary spray adhesive, lightly spray the backside on each of the scalloped panels. Center one scalloped panel on each of the four gold sections that measure 20½ x 20½. 3. With the sewing machine set to a zig zag stitch, appliqué around the inside and outer edge on each of the scalloped panels. Press the panels. 4. Sew a 3½ strip of the burgundy floral print to the top and bottom edge of each of the four appliquéd sections. Square off the ends using a straight edge ruler, cutting mat and rotary cutter. 5. To frame each of the scalloped panels, sew a 3½ strip of the burgundy floral print to each side. Square off the ends using a straight edge ruler, cutting mat and rotary cutter. 6. On all four panels sew the 3½ wide gold strips to the outer edge. 7. On two of the sections, sew a gold strip to the inside edge. 8. With right sides together, sew two of the panels together with the gold section in the center. Repeat to make another section. There will be two sections at this time. 9. Cut 12 sections from the gold 3½ strips 25 long. 10. To create three sashing strips, follow the next set of steps. Sew a 3½ square burgundy section to each end of one of the gold 3½ wide strips. Sew a 25 long gold strip to one end of the burgundy squares and then sew another 3½ burgundy square to the end of the gold strip. 11. To piece the quilt top together, sew one sashing section to the top of each of the two appliquéd sections. Baby Lock Project: Dresden Plate Quilt Page 2 of 5
12. Sew the top appliquéd to the bottom appliquéd section, being caerful that the corners are aligned. 13. Sew the last sashing to the bottom edge of the quilt. 14. Following the manufacturer s directions, roll the batting backing and the quilt top onto the frames. Quilting with Quilt Motion: 1. Following the manufacturer s directions, connect the computer to the Quilt Motion unit. 2. Turn on the computer and click on the Quilt Motion icon on the desk top. 3. The first thing we will do is measure the quilt in the program. Click on Baby Lock in the Quilt Cad field. 4. In the Baby Lock field click on Start Remote Display. This will connect to the Jewel. 5. On the Quilt Motion display, click on the ruler and click on Start. Move the Jewel to the left side of the quilt. Next move the Jewel to the Left side of the quilt and click on End. The title bar will show the width of the quilt. You will need to remember this number since the machine will not. Touch on the icon Back to Computer. 6. In the Quilt Motion program, click on Pantograph and then New. Set the quilt size as follows: set the Height to 12 and the Width to 60.5 (This was determined by using the ruler). Set the Columns to 7 and apply. 7. To retrieve the pattern click on Read. Under Windows Explorer, open Continuous Line Patterns as shown in the following illustration. This will be found under the Quilt Cad program file. Select pattern Curlyarcs.gpf and click Open. Baby Lock Project: Dresden Plate Quilt Page 3 of 5
8. With the columns selected, click on Place. 9. To fill the designated area with the pattern, follow the next set of steps: at the bottom of the field, click on By Ends to connect the lines. Click on Max for horizontal placement and Max for Vertical placement. 10. Click on the Baby Lock tab. In this field click on Remove all Trim Lines. This will create one continuous line without stopping. 11. Click on Start Remote Display. 12. Go back to the Jewel quilting machine and set the Safety Area by following the prompts. 13. Click on Sew Pattern. 14. Pull the bobbin thread to the top by following the prompts on the screen. Click on Continue to Sew to quilt the first section 15. Roll the quilt and repeat for the next section. 16. Sew the bias strips together and apply the bias binding to the quilt. Baby Lock Project: Dresden Plate Quilt Page 4 of 5
17. Using the large yo-yo maker, follow the manufactures directions to make four yo-yos. Sew the yo-yos to the center of each of the plates then sew a gold button to the center of the yo-yo.
