A P A PASTORAL MESSAGE FROM FROM FR.. M. MARTIN: We have a Savior You re not Him. W e Catholics have many different ways of engaging in Lent. Some people attend the Stations of the Cross in order to enter into the passion of Christ more deeply. Others will attend the Lenten lecture series to learn how they can grow in virtue in their ordinary lives. Others will participate in the 40 Days for Life. Still others will give up something in particular and offer their alms to the poor. Lent sparks our creativity and challenges us to grow in faith. Lent itself and, indeed, all of our penitential practices are meant to point us to Christ the Savior. We depend on Him for everything in our lives. This is an important lesson for all of us. It s good to know we have a Savior. It s even better to know that I m not Him! What a relief for us to know that, while God allows us to participate in the story of salvation, we re not the author of the story. We re not even the main character. We must take up our cross but it s His cross that really counts. What does this mean for us? It means that the burdens of the world don t have to fall on our shoulders. There s a missing Malaysian plane, armed aggression in Ukraine, government tyranny in Venezuela, and a host of other challenges in our world. You and I can only do so much. That s a fact of life. That s why we need our Savior, because we can t do it alone. While our society tells us that we must do it all, we know that there is great freedom in accepting our own limitations, our weaknesses, and our need for a Savior. So, as we engage our creativity and grow in faith during this penitential season, let us never forget that the Savior has already carried our cross. He has taken the burden off of our shoulders. We have a Savior you re not Him! EILLY PARISH CENTER REILLY 2711 Indian Mound Trail Coral Gables, Florida 33134 Phone: (305) 446-9950 www.cotlf.org Follow us on Facebook and Twitter! 4 TH SUNDAY IN LENT MARCH 30, 2014 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm 23:1 NEW VISION esus proclaimed that he came into the world to J make the sightless see and the seeing blind. A difficult saying! But surely it must mean that Jesus intended to take our ordinary ways of looking at things and turn them inside out. Jesus came to change our perspective. When the prophet Samuel went out to select the new king, he chose a young man who had the look of royalty about him. But God told him not to judge by appearances. God told Samuel and today tells us to change our perspective and to look at things and people differently. We are like the Ephesians, whom Paul urged to live as children of the light. With the light of faith, we have a new way of looking at things, and we are called to bring that new vision to the world around us. This is a great vocation, a calling to wake people up to what s really important. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION f there is such a thing as a Catholic trademark I it is the sign of the cross, first traced on the senses of catechumens as they begin the journey to baptism, or on the forehead of an infant who is brought to the doors of the church at baptism. As early as the third century, Christians were tracing the sign of the cross on their bodies. At first, the cross was traced on the forehead during times of prayer and daily occupations. We use a similar small cross today as we trace the cross over on the forehead, lips, and heart at the Gospel during Mass. Much later, the full-body sign traced from forehead to heart to shoulders took shape, perhaps copying the priest s gesture of blessing with the consecrated host during Mass. Today, this superb baptismal gift is a sign of belonging to Christ and the community, a way of focusing our attention, of asking for God s blessing, of tracing on our shoulders a willingness to find meaning in life s burdens. In the sign of the cross, we have an ever-available means of expressing gratitude for our baptism. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Each talk is preceded by a potluck Catholic Casseroles beginning at 6:30pm. All are welcome. Since COTLF Charities began in October of last year, over $10,000 have been distributed in the aid of our parishioners and local residents in most need. COTLF Charities provides a one-time assistance as a means to help those within our parish, who find themselves in an emergency situation, get back on their feet. From helping with rent to providing basic needs like food, water, and clothing, COTLF Charities is supported completely by the donations of the good people of God here at Church of the Little Flower. If you would like to contribute to COTLF Charities, all donations made to the Poor Box, which is located by the main door of the Church, goes towards this important ministry. All donated food and clothing, which can be dropped off from Friday-Sunday in the vestibule area of the Church, is distributed to those in need, both here at COTLF and at St. John Bosco Parish in Little Havana. Since we cannot stock and maintain a food pantry here at COTLF, all food donations are picked up by the St. John Bosco van on a weekly basis. In order to assist those who are hungry who arrive at our door, we are seeking the donation of Publix Gift Cards. Please consider giving to COTLF Charities this Lent as we continue this very important work of mercy for those who are most in need! Thank you and God bless you.

Jesús vino a cambiar nuestra perspectiva. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
