Sports Appeal and Marketing Why do people spend time & money on sports? People spend time and money on sports because they feel excitement and are entertained by the competition and spectacle of sports. Sports marketers sell sports, games, and services to these fans. 2

Sports Appeal and Marketing The two major components of sports marketing are: Marketing OF sports (think the core product) Marketing THROUGH sports (think nike, goodyear, redbull) What is Sports Marketing? All the marketing activities designed to satisfy the needs and wants of sports consumers 3

Categories of Sports Sports and sporting events can be classified into the following 4 Main Categories: Amateur Sports High school Sports College/University Sports Professional Sports 4

Amateur and Professional Sports Sports consumers are not attracted to only professional sporting events, such as Leafs, Raptors, Blue Jays, TFC (DeFoe rules) A sports consumer finds interest in the sport and not just the classification or level of sport. Any examples? do you follow any amateur sports/teams? 5

Amateur Sports High school, college, university or any recreational player is considered an amateur athlete. amateur athlete a person who does not get paid to play a sport Amateur sporting events attract a large number of fans, attention, and money. Any examples? 6

High School Sports In Canada, high school teams compete locally, then regionally, and finally at OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) OFSAA is committed to the philosophy of education through sport. 7

College & University Sports Sporting events at the college level are very popular and extremely competitive in all regions, whether Canada or the USA CIS Canadian Interuniversity Sport a national organization that governs all university sports. What is the NCAA? National Collegiate Athletic Association. A national organization that governs college athletics and oversees important decisions pertaining to athletics 8

College & University Athletes College & University athletes are not paid, they are not compensated despite helping their school earn money from the sporting event College & University athletes are not permitted to sign endorsement deals or receive any compensation for their talents College Revenues at a glance Do you think this is appropriate & fair?

Professional Sports The income of a professional athlete is paid for by their employer, which is the team or organization. Kessel paid by the Leafs RGIII paid by the Redskins Professional athletes also have the opportunity to earn income from outside their sport. Examples? Endorsements, Entertainment, Media Events Professional Athlete an athlete has the will and ability to earn an income from a particular sport. Having the will can be just as important in anything you do 10

Professional Sports Are professional teams considered businesses? Yes! Teams in professional sports are considered fully functional businesses, and operate like any other business for a profit It is the main purpose of teams to; get the best players in order to win their events attract fans who will purchase tickets and merchandise all in the effort of earning a profit for the corporation 11
