B.Sc (NURSING) PROSPECTUS 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 MR.Omayal Achi MR.Arunachalam Trust is a Public Charitable Trust founded in the year 1976, in memory of Late Mr.MR.Arunachalam, a well known business man and his mother Mrs.MR.Omayal Achi, who lost their lives in a tragic air crash at Bombay in 1976. The legal heirs have donated the entire wealth of the deceased to this Trust. 1.2 In furtherance of its objectives in the areas of Education and Health care, the Trust has started the Omayal Achi College of Nursing in 1992. The College of Nursing is designed to meet the ever growing need for qualified nurses in the country, where at present the number of trained nursing personnel is woefully inadequate. This College offers a four year B.Sc (N) program, two year M.Sc (N) program, PhD Nursing Programme and also offers one year specialization program in Post Basic Diploma in Oncology Nursing. 1.3 The college is located at No.45, Ambattur Road, Puzhal, Chennai-66. The College is known for its excellence in preparing nurses with competence and quality. The College has built a magnificent infrastructure in 1, 00,000 Sq ft only for Nursing Education and is first of its kind in India. 1.4 The infrastructure includes various preclinical laboratories, spacious Class Rooms, two storied library, Conference Halls, Examination Hall and a high tech - 612 Seated Auditorium. The other facilities include Hostel for girls, Mess, Dining Hall, Recreational Room, Guest Room, Visitors Lounge, Common network areas. The College offers transport facilities to commute students to clinical practice areas. 1.5 The College has its parent hospital Sir.Ivan Stedeford Hospital, Ambattur, run by its sister Trust, A.M.M. Foundation. This hospital with various specialties has at present bed strength of 250. An intensive Care Unit with 10 beds, NICU, Dialysis Unit has been commissioned. In addition to this, the students gain hands on practice at Vijaya Hospital & Health Centre, Vadapalani; Sundaram Medical Foundation, Anna Nagar; Southern Railway Hospital, Perambur; Cancer Institute, Adayar; Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk; Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital, Chetpet are also utilized. The College has its own rural Community Health Centre at Arakkambakkam which provides comprehensive health care services to the community and facilitates enriched experience in Community Health Nursing for the students. The Primary Health Centre at Avadi and IPH (Institute of Public Health) - Poonamalle is also available to our students for Community Health Care Service Training. 2. VISION STATEMENT Our vision is to advance the body of Nursing Knowledge through education, innovative technological approaches, integrating theory, research and practice to transform Nursing care Locally, Nationally and Globally. 3. MISSION STATEMENT The Omayal Achi College of Nursing pursues Excellence in Nursing Education by preparing students to be competent, committed, Quality focused and value based professional Nurses with the motto Love to Serve. 4. PHILOSOPHY 4.1 The faculty of this College believe that the Professional Nursing Degree Course is based and built on sound Scientific Educational theory and practice; prepare our students to provide comprehensive health care with true compassion. 4.2 We also accept that there is a need to prepare nurses, who can make independent decisions to protect the rights and facilitate individuals and groups to pursue health; function in the hospital, community, and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. 1

4.3 We recognize the need to prepare nurses to assume the role of Educator, Supervisor & Manager in a Clinical / Public health & Education setting. 5. OBJECTIVES On completion of the Basic B.Sc (N) Programme the graduate will be able to: 5.1 Apply knowledge from physical, biological, and behavioral sciences, medicine including alternative systems and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities. 5.2 Demonstrate understanding of life style and other factors, which affect health of individuals and groups. 5.3 Provide nursing care based on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individual and groups. 5.4 Demonstrate critical thinking skill in making decisions in all situations in order to provide quality nursing care. 5.5 Utilize the latest trends and technology in providing health care. 5.6 Provide promotive, preventive and restorative health services in line with the national health policies and programmes. 5.7 Practice within the framework of code of ethics and professional conduct, and acceptable standards of practice within the legal boundaries. 5.8 Communicate effectively with individuals and groups, and members of the health team in order to promote effective interpersonal relationship and teamwork. 5.9 Demonstrate skills in teaching to individuals and groups in clinical/community health settings. 5.10 Participate effectively as members of the health team in health care delivery system. 5.11 Demonstrate leadership and managerial skills in clinical/ community health settings. 5.12 Conduct need based research studies in various settings and utilize the research findings to improve the quality of care. 5.13 Demonstrate awareness, interest, and contribute towards advancement of self and profession. 6. SCOPE 6.1 Scope of Nursing practice encompasses provision of Promotive, Preventive, Curative and Rehabilitative aspects of care to people across their life span in wide variety of health care settings. Practice of Nursing is based upon application of basic concepts and principles derived from the Physiological, Biological and Behavioral Sciences, Medicine & Nursing. 6.2 This programme provides a solid foundation for continuing professional development and for postgraduate study of Nursing, which can pave way to achieve M.Phil (N) & Doctoral Degree in Nursing & Post Doctoral Fellowships. 7. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 7.1 Application Form: Application form and Prospectus can be obtained from the Admission Officer, Omayal Achi College of Nursing, No. 45, Ambattur Road, Puzhal, Chennai-600 066 on payment of 2

Rs.500/- by cash / DD drawn in favour of Omayal Achi College of Nursing or can be downloaded from our website www.omayaln.com 7.2 Eligibility: (i) Only female, single candidates are eligible. (ii) Minimum Age should have completed 17 years of age as on 31 st December of the year of admission. (iii) Candidates should have passed 10+2 of schooling. They should have passed either the higher secondary examination conducted by the Government of Tamilnadu or an equivalent examination accepted by the Governing Council of the Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University. In the qualifying Examination, they must have taken the following subjects- Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and obtained a minimum of 45% Aggregate marks. (iv) The candidates shall be medically fit to undertake the 4 year B.Sc (N) Programme (v) The Selection Committee constituted by Government of Tamilnadu and the Governing Council of Omayal Achi College of Nursing shall finalize the selection and allot the candidates as per 65%: 35% Quota ratio. 8. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION 8.1 The Sanctioned annual intake of the College is 50. 35% of these seats are filled by the Management. 8.2 Any unfilled vacancies remaining after the cutoff date prescribed by the Selection Committee shall also be filled up by the Management. 8.3 This will be done on the basis of application received from the candidates specifically for being selected against Management quota and unfilled vacancies. 8.4 The intending candidates must submit their applications in the prescribed form to the Admission Officer, Omayal Achi College of Nursing, No.45, Ambattur Road, Puzhal, Chennai-600 066. 8.5 Two self addressed envelopes of size 28 cm by 13 cm should be enclosed with the application & affixed with five Rupees postage stamp each. 8.6 Xerox copies of the mark sheets and other documents should be enclosed with the application in the following order. 8.7 Certificates and Documents: (i) 10 th Mark Sheet (ii) 12 th Mark Sheet (iii) Transfer Certificate (iv) Conduct Certificate from the Head of the Institution, wherein the applicant studied her qualifying examination. (v) Community Certificate (if applicable). (vi) Medical fitness certificate from authorized Medical Practitioner (vii) Hepatitis B & Typhoid Vaccination certificate 3

8.8 Application with incomplete information and not accompanied by documents required as above will be rejected. 8.9 Candidates called for the interview should bring with them all the above Certificates and mark sheets in original. 8.10 Candidates who have appeared for examination other than the Tamilnadu State Board Examination have to produce the Eligibility Certificate from the Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University, No.69, Anna Salai, Guindy, Chennai-32. 8.11 Candidates who have appeared for examination other than the Tamilnadu State Board examination have to produce Migration certificate from the Board wherein the applicant studied her qualifying examination. 9. SELECTION OF CANDIDATES 9.1 A list of eligible candidates in the order of merit will be prepared by the College Selection Committee on the basis of an interview. 9.2 The unfilled vacancies remaining after the cutoff date will be filled up with candidates in the list so prepared in the order of merit. 9.3 Admission granted is provisional subject to: (i) Supreme Court / Tamil Nadu Government Norms. (ii) The payment of College & Hostel fees. (iii) Submission of original certificates including Eligibility Certificate & Migration Certificate. 10. PROGRAMME OF STUDY 10.1 The B.Sc (Nursing) Programme is a four year course and it includes 3 ½ years course along with 6 months integrated practice. Examination will be conducted by the Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University during the month of August every year. 11. INSTRUCTIONAL FACILITIES 11.1 The qualified nursing, medical and non-medical faculty of the College of Nursing provides high quality programme of study. Method of instruction includes formal lectures, group discussions, laboratory sessions, field work and planned clinical experience, under faculty guidance. Provision is also made for individual guidance and various clinical experiences. A well organized counseling department also helps the student for their self development. 11.2 The minimum requirement is 100% attendance in Clinical experience including Community Health Nursing experience and 100% attendance in Theory in each subject in each year. 11.3 Absence in the Clinical area without prior permission will be counted as two days of absence and will have to be compensated. 11.4 Students will be permitted to enter the IV year course only after they have passed all the subjects of I, II and III year and any student with more than 3 subject arrears will not be promoted to next year. 11.5 Academic Progress: A high academic performance is expected from the students of our quality oriented Institution. To this effect regular assessment and progress reports will be maintained and the parents/guardians will be intimated as and when found necessary. Students who do not show any progress or who fail repeatedly in the internal examinations may not be allowed to appear for University examination or even to continue the course. 4

11.6 Annual Examinations and Results: As per the regulations of the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University. 11.7 On successful completion of the programme and convocation, the student register with the Tamilnadu Nurses and Midwives council. 12. COLLEGE FEES 12.1 Each candidate selected for admission should pay the fees during admission. Then, at the beginning of each academic year the student should comply with all the admission requirements and pay all the fees for the year, failing which fine would be collected for delayed payments. 12.2 In any circumstances the student voluntarily wishes to discontinue should pay the tution fee for the remaining years. 13. UNIFORM 13.1 Students are required to wear the uniform prescribed by the College during clinical experience. 13.2 Students should have their hair put up and should wear only prescribe foot wears. 13.3 Students are not allowed to wear any jewellery except small ear rings during the clinical experience. 14. VACATIONS 14.1 Vacations are given according to the programme of study; one month vacation is split during December & May respectively. Students are not permitted to have any other kind of leave or absenteeism during the study period. 14.2 Disciplinary action will be taken if students remain absent as per the guidelines laid in the disciplinary hand book. 14.3 A Medical Certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner must be produced within 3 days in the event of illness. 15. STUDENTS ACTIVITIES 15.1 Students are expected to participate in all the activities organized by the College. Students are encouraged to become members of the Students Nurses Association. The Student Nurses Association will provide a means of personal and professional development for the nursing student. 15.2 To use leisure time creatively and effectively, they are provided with facilities for indoor and outdoor games. 15.3 Picnics are arranged for the students every year. Educational trips will be arranged during the course and students will have to bear the full expense of the trip. Free conveyance may be available for short distances. 16. CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE 16.1 Students are responsible to the Principal for the behavior both in and outside the College. 16.2 Students should maintain silence in the class, library and in the corridors. 16.3 Students should make every effort to take care of the College, Hostel and Hospital property. 5

16.4 Any willful damage done to the property of the College, Hostel and Hospital will be dealt with as a breach of discipline. 16.5 Students are required to abide by the rules and regulations laid by the hospital, hostel and College authorities. Violation of rules will entail disciplinary action as laid down by the disciplinary committee of the college. 16.6 Students are required to maintain ethical and professional standards and behaviors. Ragging in any form will lead to expulsion. 16.7 Students will not involve themselves in any religious activity publicly within the campus during their tenure in the College. 16.8 Students who are found to have major health problems viz., cardiac problems, epilepsy, psychiatric problems or any other major illness will have to discontinue their course and the fees paid will not be refunded. 16.9 Voluntary withdrawal: Students who voluntarily withdraw from the college shall be required to pay full fees for the entire course. The fees already paid will not be refunded. 16.10 The Disciplinary action will be taken by the Management as per the guidelines given in the disciplinary hand book. 17. HEALTH PROGRAMME 17.1 Each student will undergo an annual medical check-up. Students will be immunized against infectious diseases as and when necessary. If illness occurs during their course they will be treated at Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital. 18. HOSTEL 18.1 All students are required to live in the hostel located in the campus. 18.2 Rooms are provided with furniture. The list of things the students should bring for their stay at the College will be given at the time of joining. 18.3 They should not bring any valuable jewellery. The College will not take any responsibility for loss or theft. 18.4 Food will be provided in the Mess attached to the Hostel. The charges for each month will be communicated every year and must be paid before the 10 th of every month. 18.5 Parents and students are required to read and sign the rules of the hostel formed by the Management. The same will be given to the student at the time of selection. 18.6 Mobile phones are strictly not permitted. 19. ANTI RAGGING COMMITTEE 19.1 If any incident of ragging comes to the notice of the authority, the concerned student shall be given liberty to explain and if her explanation is not found satisfactory, the authority would expel her from the Institution. 20.
