Transcription:

This guide will walk you through how to export citations from some of the most commonly used health sciences databases and resources into EndNote X7. Many of these examples are for an entire platform (ex: Medline on the Ovid platform). The instructions for other databases on the same platform will be the same. If you have further questions please contact an Informationist at hs- library@columbia.edu for more assistance. In this guide you will learn how to export from the following databases: PubMed Ovid (Medline) Embase EBSCO (CINAHL) Web of Science AccessMedicine Scopus Cochrane Library ProQuest WorldCAT Google Scholar Individual Journals (Selected Examples) How to import citation files into EndNote: When exporting citations into EndNote, it is strongly advised to use Firefox as your browser. When using Firefox, the file that is created during the export can be quickly and seamlessly imported into EndNote using the pop- up window that asks how to open a file. From the pop- up window, be sure to select Open with EndNote X7. You can also check off the box that says Do this automatically for files like this from now on, for more efficient exporting from databases you use the most. 1

PubMed: PubMed is the most frequently used biomedical literature database in the world. In order to export citations from PubMed into EndNote, you can collect citations in the Clipboard (as shown below), or simply select the citations from the results list you want to export, and then select the Send to button from the Results list page and follow the same steps. Check of the articles you wish to export. Go to Send to: Clipboard, and add the items to your clipboard. The Clipboard is a place to store citations temporarily, so you can do another search and still keep them saved together to export later. This saves you time because you only have to export once. Once all the articles are sent to the Clipboard, open the Clipboard by clicking on it in the top right corner. From the Clipboard, select Send to: Citation Manager. If you have more than 20 citations, be sure to select a large enough number to send. Then click Create File. 2

Ovid (Medline): Medline is one of many databases on the Ovid platform. All Ovid databases have the same exporting steps. Check off the articles you wish to export. Select the Export button. From the Export Citation List page, be sure to select EndNote as the software you want to export to. Always select Complete Reference for the display fields. This ensures that all the citation information will be brought in, including the abstract. 3

Embase: Embase is an internationally scoped biomedical literature database. It s a vital resource for anyone doing systematic reviews or research that needs a global perspective. To export citations from Embase, select the results you wish to export, and then use the Export button found in the blue Results bar. Be careful not to use the blue History bar above. From the Export page, select RIS format as the export format. There is no Output needed. The RIS format will include all the information listed for each citation in EndNote. 4

EBSCO (CINAHL): EBSCO is another large platform that has dozens of different databases. One of the biggest health sciences databases on the EBSCO platform is CINAHL, the nursing and allied health literature database. In order to export citations from EBSCO, you must first add the citations you wish to send to the folder, by clicking on the Folder icon to the right of the citation. Once you have put all of your citations in the folder, you can go to the Folder View. From the Folder, you can select Export. Be sure to select Direct Export in RIS Format to send the citations to EndNote. 5

Web of Science: Web of Science is a collection of resources and databases, including the Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index (now called the Web of Science Core Collection), Journal Citation Reports, InCites, and more. Because Web of Science and EndNote are both owned by the same parent company (Thompson Reuters), the two programs work fairly seamlessly with one another. This allows quicker and more direct exporting into EndNote. It also can send citations to EndNote Online (previously EndNote Web). Be careful to select the correct EndNote when you are exporting. There are two ways to export citations from Web of Science. The first way is a direct send, where you check off the citations you want to send and immediately select Save to EndNote Desktop. Be sure to select Full Record when you export from here. The second way gives you more control over what is exported. This involves sending the citations to the Marked List first. By sending citations to the Marked List first, you gain access to the exporting features in the Marked List. 6

AccessMedicine: AccessMedicine is a comprehensive online medical resource that incorporates core clinical textbooks, multimedia library, differential diagnostic tool, quick reference tools for guidelines, diagnostic tests, and Dx & Rx, self- assessment tools and clinical cases, patient information, and more. It is an ideal database to export book chapters from clinical textbooks, because each chapter has it s own page and export tool. To export a book chapter from AccessMedicine, click on Get Citation from the chapter you wish to export. From there select EndNote. It will be imported into EndNote as a Book Section with the proper citation styling including the chapter author and title, book title and book editor. 7

Scopus: Scopus is the largest abstract and citation index of peer- reviewed literature, including scientific journals, books, and conference proceedings in the areas of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities. To export citations from Scopus, select the citations you wish to export and click on the Export button. From the export options, choose RIS Format and be sure to select All available information, so that you will get the most complete citation possible brought into EndNote. 8

Cochrane Library: Cochrane Library is home to several databases, including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), and the CENTRAL Database of Clinical Trials. It is a widely used resource for clinicians to find high levels of evidence thanks to its gold standard reputation for comprehensive and detailed systematic reviews. To export citations from Cochrane, select the references you wish to export and click on the Export selected button. You can also select Export all. The export options ask you to select your operating system (Mac, PC, or Linux) for the export type, and the file type should always be the most inclusive, which is Citation and Abstract. 9

ProQuest: ProQuest is a broad- based platform with many databases in the arts, sciences, and technology, including newspapers and peer- reviewed literature. To export from ProQuest, check off the citations you wish to export. The Export/Save button is a drop- down menu, from there select EndNote, Citari, or Reference Manager. For the export options, be sure to have the output style as EndNote, and the content as Citation, abstract, and indexing. This will make sure that you get the most comprehensive citation brought into EndNote. You can also check off the Deselect items when done to make the next search easier. 10

WorldCAT: WorldCAT is essentially the world s library catalog. It has records for books, journals, and multimedia from academic, research, and public libraries across the world. It not only allows you to identify what institutions house a specific text, but it s also a very efficient way to export book citations into EndNote. Be sure you have selected the correct edition for the book you want to export. You can locate other editions from the View all editions link on the results page. To export, simply click on the Cite/Export link. From the export page, select Export to EndNote. WorldCAT does not have individual book chapters, so when you export a book from WorldCAT into EndNote, it only brings in the complete book. If you need a specific chapter from that book, the easiest thing to do is to go into the record in EndNote and change the citation type from Book to Book Section, and enter in the chapter information manually. If your book is on a platform such as AccessMedicine you can export book chapters. 11

Google Scholar: While it may seem easy to export citations from Google Scholar, it s often not the best option. Google Scholar can export citations, and at times it may be the only way to directly export something into EndNote. However, Scholar only exports the most basic citation information, so if you can find the source in another database, the citation information will likely be more comprehensive there than from Google Scholar. To export from Scholar, select the Cite button found under the citation. From the cite page, select Import into EndNote. You can also select the remember my bibliography manager, so the next time you want to send a citation to EndNote from Scholar, Import to EndNote will appear where the Cite button currently is under the citations. 12

Individual Journals (Selected Examples): There may be instances where you want to import citation into EndNote but you re not in a database, instead you re in the actual article on the journal s website. While it s impossible to give an exhaustive list of journals and how to export from them, here are a couple examples that can give you an idea of what things to look for when you re in a journal to identify how to export that citation into EndNote. Be on the lookout for words like: Citation, Download, Export, Citation Manager, Bibliographic Manager, EndNote, etc. 13
