Scopus covers all major peer reviewed STM titles and is integrated with Scirus web search to cover the scientific web It is updated daily Note the Scopus database is geared towards scientific and technical subjects OPENING THE SCOPUS DATABASE You can access the Scopus database through the University of Sydney Library Either type into your web browser Search for Scopus in the Library Catalogue Open from the Databases and Electronic Resources page (see below) - 1 -

2 Go to the USYD library homepage Click Databases and Electronic Resources Under Databases by Title select S Scroll down until you find the Scopus entry

3 Click Scopus Accept the conditions - 3 -

4 Before you can access the Scopus database you might be asked to enter your UniKey and UniKey password OR your library details. If so, fill in whichever is appropriate and click the relevant login button. FINDING PUBLICATIONS You can search for publications by Author Affiliation or University Author Search Click the Author Search tab - 4 -

5 Enter the author s name into the name fields Click Search Select the check box next to the author s name - 5 -

6 If there is more than one matching author then select the box next to the correct one. If the author has more than one entry select ALL the relevant entries. Click Show documents to view their publication details - 6 -

7 This displays the publication details for the author: title, all authors, date and the number of times the publication is cited by other publications in the Scopus dataset Affiliation or University Search Click the Affiliation Search tab - 7 -

8 Type University of Sydney into the Affiliation box Click Search This search will bring up a number of affiliations. Select the University of Sydney

9 Look at the other affiliations some may be part of USYD and should be included. In the example below No.9 University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine should be included As at 20-Oct-2008 the University of Sydney affiliations listed separately are: University of Sydney University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine Save Sight Institute Kolling Institute of Medical Research University of Sydney Faculty of Health Sciences Select all the relevant affiliations Click Show documents - 9 -

10 Alternatively you can quickly pull the all the USYD affiliations by entering the following into the Search field on the Advanced Search Tab: (AF-ID("Kolling Institute of Medical Research" ) OR AF- ID("Save Sight Institute" ) OR AF-ID("University of Sydney Faculty of Health Sciences" ) OR AF- ID("University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine" ) OR AF- ID("University of Sydney" ) ) Then click Search

11 This will display all the publications in the Scopus database with a USYD author You can refine the search by journal, author, year, document type or subject area

12 CITATION ANALYSIS About Citations Citations are a widely used, conventional measure of research strength. A citation is a reference to one academic publication in the text of another. The more citations a publication receives the better it is perceived to be, the more highly cited papers a university publishes, the stronger it can be considered to be. It should be noted that the Scopus database has a strong emphasis on medical and life sciences and on institutions from countries where the principal language is English To get citation details for a publication select its checkbox and click Citation tracker To get all the citation details for an author select All publications checkbox You can modify the citation analysis in various ways

13 The results can be graphed For example, an individual s publications by year in the Scopus database

14 Or the number of times they are cited by year

15 Note the citation tracker holds a maximum of 5,000 documents so it cannot be used for large searches EXPORTING THE RESULTS On the Publication results page select the records you want to export (Click All to export all of them) Click Output

16 Chose an appropriate export format RIS format (i.e. Reference Manager, Endnote) Comma Separated file (.csv e.g. Excel) There is a limit of 2,000 entries for the Bibliography formatted exports (i.e. Endnote), so CSV format is the most appropriate for an Affiliation export

17 Use the Output dropdown box to modify and select fields for export The default citation only includes Author(s) Document title Year Source Title Volume, Issue, Pages Citation count Source and Document Type Click Export The report may take several minutes to download The CSV export should look like this Note the number of citations for each publication is listed IMPORTANT POINTS TO CONSIDER Scopus database is geared towards scientific and technical subjects There does not appear to be any allowance made for the number of authors on a publication. This may skew results and tends to favour those contributing to articles with lots of other authors The database is updated daily. Recreating earlier results may not be possible GETTING HELP
