Win in Africa with Africa Specific measures and improved skills Ever since the election of Joseph S Blatter as President in FIFA s development work has become more and more diverse particularly in Africa The Financial Assistance Programme the Goal projects and more recently the Win in Africa with Africa initiative which has a budget of USD million are just three prime examples of FIFA s work in this area Win in Africa with Africa is part of the legacy that FIFA intends to leave for the entire African continent through the FIFA World Cup in South Africa This initiative includes a number of specific and complementary measures that will all contribute towards improving the quality of football in Africa in the long term install highquality artificial turf pitches (one for each CAF member with the exception of South Africa); help to professionalise football by supporting elitelevel clubs (evaluations and advice to improve domestic competitions organisation of various courses provision of equipment implementation of a system to manage player licences and competitions reparation of a club licensing system); provide support for training camps ahead of the FIFA World Cup ; train sports managers (CIES); implement a medical research and awareness programme; provide support for CAF s th anniversary celebrations and most notably for the creation of a DVD package on African football history; organise a gala match in South Africa in honour of Nelson Mandela; provide support with the organisation of the FIFA U and U World Cups in Egypt and Nigeria respectively most notably by providing the finance for the artificial turf pitches to be used during the competitions; organise seminars for African media with a view towards their coverage of the FIFA World Cup (the main target groups for these seminars will be writtenmedia journalists photographers TV commentators and video content producers); One of FIFA s main objectives for its work in Africa will be to improve skills and help those involved in football to become more professional National and regional courses have been organised to help national technical directors club coaches referees coaching instructors association and club presidents and the medical and paramedical staff of the member associations to meet their African counterparts and exchange experiences and gather information about new approaches techniques and practices Those who have benefited directly from the courses have been able to pass on their knowledge and knowhow to many more people who are also involved in football at both regional and community level In other words every single player whether amateur or professional and fan on the African continent has benefited indirectly from improvements in the quality of football and all of its virtues FIFA s determination to bring a greater level of professionalism to everyone involved in football in Africa has also included other professions that contribute to the success and popularity of the game Journalists in the written media match commentators photographers and even video content producers of African origin will be invited to seminars in various regions of Africa that will be led by some of the world s leading experts in order to improve the quality of coverage of the game and competitions and to help amateurs to take even more pleasure from the game Finally the sports management course in Africa created in conjunction with the International Center for Sports Studies (CIES) is proof positive of FIFA s determination to pass on its skills and knowledge to Africa For the last two years four African universities (two in South Africa one in Senegal and another in Egypt) have been offering their students basic sports management courses in English French and Arabic that have been adapted to regional issues
