Natural Color and Scent for your Natural Soap When I take the time to make all natural soap, it s important to me to keep all of the ingredients natural. I think it s a shame when I see handmade soap that has fragrance oils added to it. Most Fragrance oils are made from petroleum based chemicals. I choose to use Essential Oils. They are plant based scents and come straight from nature. When it comes to Cold Process Soap Making, many of the essential oils are too delicate to survive the chemical reaction that soap goes through. When we make Hot Process Soap, we cook the soap batch and induce the chemical reaction, and then we are free to add whatever we like to the soap without losing any of the benefits. Let s begin looking at some of the natural colors available to us for hot processing. There are many more, this is just the beginning. First it s important to prepare your ingredients.
Caution!!!! When you are using herbs or oatmeal, please be sure you grind it very fine, to a powder. When I first began making soap, I made a really nice batch of soap with honey, oatmeal, vanilla and lots of cocoa butter. It looked and smelled fantastic. But... when I went to use it to try it out, the oatmeal in the soap was hard and very sharp. It actually broke my skin. This is really important to remember, and be sure you grind it very fine. It needs to be able to pass through a sifter. This rule also applies to herbs. Some herbs, such as the stem of rose buds, can be like little daggers. Make sure you either remove these, or grind them very fine. Grind the herb or oatmeal powder form Pass the herb/oatmeal through a sifter There are 2 ways to color your soap. You can do a complete color, or you can do a swirl. For a complete color, where the soap is a solid color, you add the color when you add your essential oils and special oils. You mix it in well, and then you put
your soap in the mold. For a color swirl, you add your color after you have mixed in your essential oils and special oil. You lightly swirl it, then put it in your soap mold. Regardless of which coloring you want to do with your soap, you should prepare your color into a liquid form. The liquid should be the consistency of honey. Not too runny, but thin enough to make a nice swirl and not be a big blob in your soap. For a 2 pound batch of soap, your should use 2 teaspoons of color to 1 teaspoon of oil (the oil you use is completely up to you. I use either olive oil or sweet almond oil). You might need to add a bit more oil; it really depends on what the color is made of. Herbs Honey Manuka honey is so fragrant! It comes from New Zealand and the honey is made from the flower of the Tea Tree Bush. Jasmine Flowers, Lavender Flowers, rose petals, any other flower petal.
Lime Leaves Micas a mineral that comes from all over the world. It is a natural color and I suggest using only a teaspoon per 2 pound batch of soap. Use a smaller amount of oil to give it the consistency of honey. DON T BE FOOLED. When you purchase mica, you should not be able to see the particles. If you can see bigger specs, this means that it has glitter added. Do not purchase it.

Do not over scent. These are very powerful strong scents. Please read information on the use of essential oils. Some oils, such as peppermint, should not be used during pregnancy.
