Speaker Profiles Paul Shenton, Managing Director, Just Costs Solicitors Paul founded Just Costs in 2006. He is dual qualified as a Barrister and a Solicitor, completing his pupillage at Hardwicke Building in London before moving to Eversheds in 1992, where he was a partner for 9 years. Whilst at Eversheds, Paul established and developed their national costs team to a turnover of approximately 2 million per annum. In addition to being the Managing Director, Paul also heads up the successful Advocacy Team and has been involved in a number of high profile cases. Karen Troy, Exchange Chambers Karen was called to the Bar in 1981. She joined Exchange Chambers in September 2011 after three years at Forbes Hare, a law firm in the British Virgin Islands, where she was a Partner and Head of Litigation. Karen s practice focuses on commercial (including chancery commercial) litigation covering most aspects of domestic and international commercial law. Matthew Williams, Head of AmTrust Law, AmTrust Financial Services Inc Matthew attended Brunel University between 1983 and 1987, obtaining a BSc in Law & Politics. He then went to the College of Law in London and qualified as a solicitor (England & Wales) in 1990. Having completed his legal training at the British Coal Corporation, Matthew spent the next four years in private practice. Since then he has worked in the insurance industry for twenty years (the last eleven as an underwriter). He joined GE Capital in 1994 and worked within its payment protection (creditor insurance) division. In 1997 he went to Eastgate which provided specialist services to insurance companies and Lloyd s Syndicates. In 2001 he moved to Brit Insurance and was appointed Class Underwriter for legal expenses insurance. In February 2010 he joined AmTrust Financial Services Inc. as Head of AmTrust Law, underwriting specialty legal expenses insurance business both in the UK and overseas. Matthew is regarded as an innovative leader whose business philosophy is underpinned by a passion for excellence and a commitment to communicate in a timely and no-nonsense manner. Nick McDonnell, Director and Northern Regional Manager, Just Costs Solicitors Nick is a Director, Northern Regional Manager and Costs Lawyer with Just Costs Solicitors. Nick graduated from Cambridge University in 1998 and subsequently went into Civil Litigation with a Solicitors firm in Lancashire where he also took up an interest in costs. Nick proceeded to develop his interest in costs working with some of the key costs firms within the industry before joining Just Costs Solicitors at its inception in January 2006. Nick developed within Just Costs where he conducted high value and complex costs matters and became responsible for all technical and practical training throughout the business offices nationwide. Nick is now a Director who continues to handle a high value and complex caseload with an emphasis on Commercial, Intellectual Property, Civil and Catastrophic Injury litigation, including costs management & budgeting, case end detailed assessment proceedings as well as handling appeals up to the Court of Appeal and assessments pursuant to the Solicitors Act 1974. Nick also has extensive experience as an advocate at costs hearings and is a qualified mediator. Neil Purslow, Chief Investment Officer, Therium Neil Purslow is Chief Investment Officer and one of the co-founders of Therium. Neil sits of the board of the Association of Litigation Funders, the self-regulatory body for the litigation funding industry in England and Wales, of which Therium is a founding member. Neil speaks regularly at conferences and is often quoted in the media on issues related to litigation funding. Prior to founding Therium, Neil was in-house Litigation Counsel for Marsh & MacLennan Companies, Inc. (MMC) and prior to that, he was in practice in the City of London and with US firm Reed Smith. Neil gained an MA in jurisprudence from the University of Oxford.
