Seinäjoki UAS was founded in 1992 to bring higher education to the region of South Ostrobothnia. The mission of the institution is solidly linked to regional development. Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences Degree programmes 20 bachelor degree programmes and 7 master degree programmes History The Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences was founded in 1992 through a merger of various institutes each of which had a history of up to 100 years. A joint municipal authority was appointed to govern the new institution. Today, Seinäjoki UAS is run by 20 municipalities in the region of Southern Ostrobothnia. Strategic aims We are a cooperative partner whose activities are characterized by excellent professional know-how and entrepreneurial spirit, a higher education community that provides incentives and promotes welfare, and a central body, innovator and catalyst for internationalisation. Applicants In recent years, approximately 16 % of applicants have been admitted after entrance examinations to study at Seinäjoki UAS. Approximately 60 % of the students come from the surrounding area. Number of full-time students The number of full-time students is about 4,600. Graduates More than 750 students graduate annually. Personnel Seinäjoki UAS employs 400 people: 200 academic staff and 200 other staff members. Budget The total budget for operating expenses in education amounts to about EUR 31 million and in R&D about EUR 7 million. Government financing is approximately 72 %. R&D Seinäjoki UAS conducts research and development with a distinctly practical emphasis, serving teaching and supporting industrial SMEs and service production within the region.

Research and Development Services R&D is carried out in co-operation with regional and national enterprises and organizations. Student involvement in R&D projects is vital to their studies and their objectives of becoming acknowledged experts in their fields. Over 50 man-years have been invested in R&D work. Approximately 80 % of the R&D funding comes from external sources. Many R&D projects involve partners from foreign countries. Library and Information Services Library services include the main Academic Library, located in the Campus Area in Seinäjoki, and separate libraries located in each educational unit of Seinäjoki UAS. The libraries provide literature and magazines that support studies and thesis work. The university encourages students and staff to independently search for information. National and international databases and access to the Internet are available for both students and staff. Student Union SAMO The student union (SAMO) at the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences is an association established and run by the students. The union s diverse objectives range from monitoring the standards of instruction and networking with the Finnish Government to organizing student parties and other leisuretime activities. SAMO and Seinäjoki UAS work together for the well-being of our international students.

Internationalization: a part of daily life Seinäjoki UAS has created international relations all over the world and has about 200 partner universities in 44 different countries. The Ministry of Education has awarded Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences for its work in international activities. The latest university charter from the European Commission was received in 2007. The international ECTS evaluation was implemented in 2006 and an international auditing in 2009. Objectives Students of Seinäjoki UAS will develop strong professional self-esteem and readiness to work in a multicultural and constantly changing environment through teamwork and applying the latest technology. Joint international research and development projects with companies and the public sector promote regional development. The internationalization of education and research also promotes cultural sensitivity and enables students and staff to work in an international and challenging environment. Student mobility Each year, approximately 150 students attending the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences study or do their one-semester internship abroad. More than 300 students go abroad for a shorter period. Approximately 200 long-term exchange students arrive yearly from Europe, Asia, the United States, Latin America and Africa. Academic and staff mobility Approximately 250 outgoing and 140 incoming professors and experts are involved in academic exchange every year. Teaching in English The amount of teaching in English is approximately 900 ECTS each year. The Degree Programme in International Business, Master s Programme in International Business Management and the Degree Programme in Nursing are taught exclusively in English. Seinäjoki UAS has also double degree programmes, which are offered in co-operation with universities abroad. In addition, about ten one-semester programmes in various fields of study are offered in English. International degree students Totally around 100 international degree students study in both the degree programmes taught in English and in the Finnish degree programmes. Conferences and seminars Seinäjoki UAS hosts one international conference and one or two international seminars annually. International projects At the moment, the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences is coordinating or participating in about 20 international research and development projects. Funding The budget for international activities taking place within the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences amounts to approximately EUR 2.3 million.
