Designed specifically for children and young people, NIDA offers a fun and supportive learning environment that unlocks creative potential and builds confidence. During the school term, each term focuses on a particular area: Term 1: Improvisation & Performance Craft Term 2: Voice & Movement Term 3: Devising & Contemporary Performance Term 4: Script Work & Staging Whether you are looking for an opportunity to participate in an intensive skills-focused program, the chance to try something new, build confidence or simply have fun, NIDA Open adult courses are the perfect choice. Courses run over eight weeks. Please choose from: Beginner courses : these courses teach you skills to build fundamental techniques. No previous training is required. Intermediate courses : these courses extend your skills to develop and apply existing techniques. Previous training is required. NIDA is Australia s National Institute of Dramatic Art, a centre of excellence in education and training for theatre, film and television. Since 1959 we have offered a variety of exceptional educational experiences through a range of full-time and short courses. TERM CLASSES Drama for grades 3 4 Practical skill-based learning in the performing arts led by industry experts with a focus on personal and creative development. Term 1: The Bestest Ever Invention 7 Feb 20 Mar Inspired by the crazy and unlikely scenarios from the pen of Andy Griffiths (writer of the Treehouse and Just! series), let your imagination run wild as you create the most exciting adventures and incredible inventions. Learn improvisation and creative storytelling techniques to unlock your imagination and step into the world of your wildest dreams. Term 2: Radio Star 1 May 19 Jun Turn up the volume and share your voice with the world! Investigate soundscape storytelling and radio plays through eight weeks of acting and voice training. Create a short voice and character presentation to share with family and friends. Term 3: In-Animate 31 Jul 18 Sep What if chairs could talk and fish could fly? If clothes could walk and paintings cry? Make everyday objects move and bring still pictures to life in this exciting adventure to animate the ordinary with an extraordinary life. Use your body to create moving characters inspired by still objects. Term 4: Stand By 16 Oct 4 Dec Acting, movement and vocal skills combine as you explore short scenes, especially selected for your age group. Discover how to interpret scripts and learn lines effectively. Create a fully developed character, rehearse and perform to the best of your ability. Term 1: Ready, Steady, Act! 7 Feb 20 Mar Improvisation is a fabulously fun performance skill and a fundamental actor s tool. It can also be the scariest thing you ever do on stage! Learn improvisation techniques to entertain an audience without a script in sight. Develop your confidence and spontaneity to give you the creative edge. Term 2: The Object of My Story 1 May 19 Jun Inspired by the world around you and objects from every day life, create new and inspiring stories for the stage, then work with a NIDA expert to turn these stories into short voice-over and radio plays. This term includes a session on accents and vocal techniques. Term 3: Compose your Scene 31 Jul 18 Sep Throw yourself into a world of storytelling through movement and sound inspired by the music of composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. Create larger than life characters and act out extraordinary scenes inspired by the music. Be introduced to physical and contemporary theatre to develop your performance skill and confidence. Term 4: Act Out 16 Oct 4 Dec Acting, movement and vocal skills combine as you explore short scenes and monologues, especially selected for your age group. Discover how to read and interpret scripts quickly and effectively. Create a short showcase of scripted work to present to family and friends. Next Stage for grades 4 6, 7 10 Next Stage provides a supportive and creatively challenging environment for young artists serious about their artistic development. Courses run across a semester (two terms) and students work towards group performance outcomes. Course work includes an introduction to a variety of disciplines and stage craft in a holistic approach to performance training. Get ready for the next stage of your creative training! To enrol, students must have previously participated in at least three NIDA term or holiday courses, or be able to provide evidence of appropriate training. Semester 1: Adaptation for the Theatre 7 Feb 20 Mar and 1 May 19 Jun Work with a NIDA director to adapt a well-known literary work for the stage. Select a text and learn the skills of adaptation for performance. This semester includes a masterclass with a playwright. Create and perform your new work for family and friends. Semester 2: Scriptwork and Staging 31 Jul 18 Sep and 16 Oct 4 Dec This is your chance to shine. Work on a fully-scripted performance chosen especially for your group. Work with a NIDA director to develop a fullyrealised character for performance then present the rehearsed work in a studio setting to family and friends. This semester includes a design and staging masterclass. Learn fundamental short and long form improvisation skills then showcase your skills in an entirely made-up, off-the-cuff, seat-of-your-pants performance at the end of the term. Start with nothing, risk everything and learn how to shine on stage in every moment. Term 2: Voiceprint 1 May 19 Jun Every voice is different and an artist can be defined by their individual sound. Get heard above the crowd and learn how to use your unique voice to the best of your ability. Work with a voice and accent specialist on characters from a diverse range of backgrounds to understand language, accent and rhythm patterns. Rehearse a short scene or monologue to showcase your new vocal skill. Term 3: Stand Tall 31 Jul 18 Sep Find your physical presence as you explore exciting and challenging contemporary and physical theatre techniques with industry experts. Explore a variety of performance styles and develop a short original theatre presentation for the stage. Term 4: On Scene 16 Oct 4 Dec An actor, a stage and a willing audience is all you need to create compelling and engaging performance. Work on scenes and monologues, practise your acting technique and learn how to hold your audience till the very last word. Participate in a mock NIDA audition and showcase your skills to family and friends at the end of the term. Term 1: Told by an Idiot 7 Feb 20 Mar Utilise a variety of improvisation techniques to create characters, develop plots and tackle the challenges you encounter in creating unique and compelling stories. Script, rehearse and perform your extraordinary tales under the direction of a NIDA specialist. Term 2: 1 May 19 Jun Three Characters in Search of an Actor Extend your range as an actor as you explore and apply a variety of vocal and physical techniques to a selection of monologues. Rework and fuse these speeches to create a dynamic solo performance where you transform from one character to another before an audience. Term 3: Pushing Boundaries 31 Jul 18 Sep Find your physical presence as you explore exciting and challenging contemporary and physical theatre techniques with industry experts. Explore a variety of performance styles and develop an original piece of theatre. Term 4: Brave New World 16 Oct 4 Dec Explore an international play through elements of a rehearsal process. Research the world of the play and explore how your discoveries affect the decisions you make on the rehearsal floor. Use a variety of techniques and accent work to bring characters to life in a selection of scenes to be performed to an invited audience.
