Cardiff U3A Walking Group Walking Programme from October 2016 to April 2017 Tuesday 4 th October 2016 coastal walk from Llantwit Major to Marcross Description of walk This is a 4.5 to 5 mile linear walk along the coast, with spectacular views and a variety of stiles. Return journey to Llantwit Major by bus. Parking Meet in the Town Hall car park at 10.30, but it is worth arriving early to secure a parking place. Directions Follow the one way system to the centre of Llantwit Major, ignore the signs for the sea and bear right and then left into the Town Hall car park. Lunch The Horseshoe Inn, Marcross Tuesday 18 th October Cefn Onn Park to the Maen Llwyd, and back to Cefn Onn Park after lunch Description of Walk This is a 5+ mile walk which can be shortened by only walking one way and then making car arrangements to be driven back. The walk includes a climb at the start but the rest of the walk is easy walking to the Maen Llwyd. Parking Meet in the Cefn Onn car park at 10.30 Directions The entrance to the park is between Thornhill and Lisvane, off a roundabout, near Lisvane railway station. Lunch The Maen Llwyd
Tuesday 1 st November circular walk in the Ogmore area Description This is a 4.5 mile walk along the coastal path and then inland along the Mari Flanders valley. Parking Meet in the coastal car park, near the Pen y Bont Surf Club building at 10.30. Directions Ogmore can be accessed from the M4 via the Pencoed exit or via the A48 or via the Barry road. The car park is on the sea side of the road and is a PAY and DISPLAY car park. Lunch The Watermill Tuesday 15 th November Ruperra Castle Description This is a 4 mile circular walk with moderate difficulty. Parking Meet in the small car park on the left of The Hollybush at Draethen at 10.30. Directions Follow the signs for Lisvane and leave Lisvane on the Rudry road. After a few miles, turn right when you see the Maen Llwyd across the junction and then follow the signs for Draethen. The car park is on the right. Lunch The Maen Llwyd Tuesday 6 th December circular walk in the Dinas Powys area Description This is a 4.5 relatively easy walk. Parking Meet in the Star Inn, Dinas Powys, car park at 10.30 Directions Follow the signs for Dinas Powys out of Cardiff and turn right at the traffic lights outside Dinas Powys school. Follow the residential road to a junction and turn left. Proceed up the hill to a junction and go across the junction. The Star Inn is on the right and the car park entrance is up a narrow entrance on the left of the building. Lunch The Star Inn
Tuesday 3 rd January 2017 Description circular walk across the barrage and around Cardiff Bay Description This is a flat walk of 4.5 to 5 miles. Parking Meet in the El Puerto car park at 10. 30. and not the public car park, which is a pay and display car park. The El Puerto car park is free for customers. Directions Follow the signs for Penarth Marina, go past Tesco and El Puerto is on the right, near the barrage. Lunch El Puerto Tuesday 17 th January in and about Welsh St Donats Description This is a 4 mile circular walk with a number of stiles. Parking Meet near St Donats church at 10.30 and park roadside near the church. Directions The village of Welsh St Donats can be accessed off the A48 going west out of Cardiff. Lunch to be arranged Tuesday 7 th February woodlands, park and coast around Barry Description This is a 5 mile walk down the Cwm Cidi valley to Porthkerry Park and along the coast to Barry. There are a few climbs en route. Parking Meet in the car park on the right hand side of the Toby Carvery Rhoose at 10.30.Post Code = CF62 3 BA Directions Follow the signs towards Cardiff airport, through the top of Barry and the Toby Carvery Rhoose is on the left hand side of Port Road West before reaching the airport. The old name for the carvery was Cwm Cidi. Lunch Toby Carvery Rhoose
Tuesday 21 st February Cowbridge, Stalling Down and Aberthin Description This is a 4+ mile circular walk out of Cowbridge and over the Down. Parking Meet in The Bear car park at 10.30. The car park can be accessed down a lane on the right of the main street, past The Bear. It is a narrow lane and easy to miss. Directions Follow the A48 westwards out of Cardiff and follow the signs for Cowbridge. Lunch The Bear Tuesday 7 th March over the Garth mountain from Pentyrch Description The circular walk is approximately 5 miles but the walk can be shortened by only walking one way. The walk is moderately difficult. Parking Meet near the bus stop, close to Pentyrch shops, at 10.15. For those travelling by bus, the bus arrives in Pentyrch before 10.15. The X bus leaves Cardiff at 9.30 and leaves Whitchurch at 9.45. Directions by car Follow the A470 north of Cardiff and bear left at the roundabout below Castell Coch. Bear right at the next roundabout and follow the road for 2 miles uphill to Pentyrch. The shops and parking area are on the right when you arrive at a junction. Lunch The Gwaelod, Gwaelod y Garth
Tuesday 21st March walking in the vale around Peterston Description This is a 4 mile circular walk with plenty of stiles. Parking Meet in the car park of the Sportsman s Rest, Peterston Super Ely at 10.30. Directions Either turn off the M4 at the Llantrisant slip road and bear left through Pendoylan or follow the A48 through St Fagan s. Lunch the Sportsman s Rest Tuesday 4 th April Llandegfedd Reservoir Trail Description This is a 6.5 mile circular walk, but an alternate walk of 4 miles will be available. There are steep sections on the longer walk. Parking Meet in the Visitors Centre car park at 10.30. Directions Follow the M4 eastwards and leave at junction 26. Follow the A4051 signed to Newport, Cwmbran and Caerleon. At roundabout, take the third exit on to the A4042 and stay on the A4042 at the next roundabout. At the next roundabout, exit on to Treherbert Road. After a short distance turn left and then left again onto Wellfield Road. Park in car park. The reservoir is badly signed so allow time for getting lost!! Lunch please bring a packed lunch for the longer walk. Food is also available in the Visitors Centre. Tuesday 18 th April coastal walk from Sully to Penarth Description easy walking on the coastal path Start of walk Meet at the Sully bus stop at about 10.30 Directions Either park in Penarth and catch the 94 bus to Sully at 10.16, from the Windsor Arcade bus stop, or catch the Sully bus from Cardiff and then back to Cardiff from Penarth. Lunch to be arranged
