HBIA Criteria for Educator Award 2016 Purpose of Award This annual Award is designed for individuals to reward and celebrate exemplary teaching. This Award recognizes the efforts of teachers who have made a broad and deep contribution to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning of their students. Eligibility for nomination (RTO Award) This Award is open to full time or contract teaching and academic staff who must have completed at least two years employment (0.5 time fraction or greater) at a Registered Training Organization neither the private and public sector. Eligibility for nomination (Salon Educator Award) This Award is open to anyone employed within a Salon for the purpose of training and educating staff. Educator Award Criteria Approaches to teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students. Encouraging student engagement through the enthusiasm shown for learning and teaching. Inspiring and motivating students through high-level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. Development of curricula and resources that reflect a command of the field may include developing and presenting coherent and imaginative resources for student learning. Approaches to assessment and feedback that foster independent learning may include integrating assessment strategies with the specific aims and objectives for student learning. Providing timely, worthwhile feedback to students on their learning; using a variety of assessment and feedback strategies. Individual or team teaching and learning skills: Types of evidence may include examples of: team teaching; movement into different roles; taking up leadership opportunities; facilitating learning in others; engaging with other professionals; working outside area of experience; contributions to body of knowledge ; sharing and re-evaluation of teaching practice; further academic studies. Positive outcomes achieved by students, attributed to candidate s contribution: Types of evidence may include examples such as: student testimonials; inspiring students to further learning; support for students with learning difficulty (disadvantaged, disabled, etc.); employer testimonials. Knowledge and standing in relation to the industry covered by their area of vocational education expertise. Types of evidence may include examples such as relevant industry testimonials; journal writings or contributions to course materials. In assessing nominations, the Selection Committee will take into account the following: The extent to which the claims for excellence are supported by formal and informal evaluation: The information contained in student questionnaires, references and selected teaching materials submitted by the nominee. The panel of judges or team members of the HBIA may contact nominees and/or referees for clarification or further information. All award submissions must be forwarded directly to the Kristy Nimmo at HBIA and included must be: A completed application form A written statement addressing the criteria of no more than 4 A4 pages. Clear evidence and information should be provided under each of the assessment criteria. (4 hard copies and also an electronic copy). Two written references of no more than one A4 side each, to be provided by people who are able to comment on the applicant s contribution to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching. Selected materials supporting claims against the selection criteria may be included. The relevance of any such material must be made clear in the written statement and should be selected to validate, but not repeat, claims made in the written statement.
