07 Delivery Unless specified, all full-time programmes are based at our Canterbury campus starting in September for a full academic year. All learning on the programme is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study is informed by and from practice. All PGCE pathways cover the following main areas: Professional Practice You will spend a minimum of 120 days in school during your PGCE, based in two or more contrasting schools or educational settings, and working under the expert guidance of school-based partnership tutors and mentors. This will support you to develop a wide range of teaching skills and the understanding and knowledge to enable you to meet and go beyond the requirements of The Teachers Standards. Professional Studies You will learn about broader aspects of education, its role in society and communities and how education policy and practice has an impact on schools and educational settings. Key principles and values in education will be explored as you develop your own theories of education and reflect critically on others. Curriculum Studies You will develop your understanding and knowledge of the relevant curriculum, pedagogy and resources to support the teaching of your chosen subject or age phase. As you progress through your studies and can apply your learning to practical teaching situations, you will be introduced to a wider range of critical perspectives on teaching and learning in your chosen subject(s). Enhanced Studies You will have the opportunity to choose a particular aspect of education and to study that in greater depth. This could include aspects of particular curriculum areas, aspects of learning which cross curriculum boundaries; the option you take could include an opportunity to undertake work experience in non-school settings, some of which could be outside the UK. Our extensive portfolio of PGCE options are detailed in this brochure. Please note: our offering is subject to Government allocations and an annual review of our provision. Faculty of EDUCATION
Postgraduate routes into TEACHING PGCE PRIMARY FULL-TIME ROUTE Lower Primary (3-7), Upper Primary (5-11) Upper Primary plus Languages: French German Spanish Upper Primary with Mathematics specialism The PGCE Primary aims to enable student teachers to become confident, competent classroom practitioners who can enable children to learn effectively across the whole curriculum. The programme also develops student teachers understanding of the demands of the National Curriculum, the Curriculum for the Foundation Stage and other Government initiatives. Two age phases are available for students to study, 3-7 or 5-11 year olds. In addition students can also opt to express an interest in Languages in the Upper Primary course. By doing so, students will follow the same Upper Primary (5-11) pathway but will have some additional opportunities to engage with Language learning and teaching, including a self-funded research opportunity in a French, Spanish or German Primary school setting. Students can also opt to follow the Upper primary 5 11 programme with mathematics specialism. This programme is designed to support you in reaching the Standards to be a Qualified Teacher, with a focus on primary mathematics. It is written for anyone who enjoys learning mathematics and wants to teach children to fully understand and be fascinated by it. The programme will enable you to be a generalist primary class teacher but will also prepare you to be a specialist teacher of primary mathematics, who leads mathematics across the school, teaching more mathematics than other subjects. You will study primary mathematics in depth, exploring the most effective ways of teaching mathematical ideas. You will also gain a strong understanding and experience of teaching other subjects. The Primary route works very closely with our partnership schools to provide a range of experiences. In our model for PGCE placement, a student is allocated to a partnership school for the full PGCE year and you may be allocated to one or two classes. This one longer placement is structured into individual days and two block placements in the Autumn and Summer terms. In addition students are required to undertake a contrasting school experience for a minimum of 15 days. This should take place in a different school setting and should provide a contrasting experience to your base school, including: size; urban or rural locations; infant or juniors; use of specific curriculum. PGCE 7-14 (KS2 and KS3) English Geography History Mathematics Modern Foreign Languages Physical Education Religious Education Science Music Design and Technology The PGCE 7-14 pathway is an innovative and unique pathway that enables students to be educated across two distinct sectors; primary and secondary. This experience and education enables the students to gain a broad knowledge and understanding of education from EYFS through to KS5. Students will engage with observation in EYFS, KS1 and KS5, are encouraged to engage in some teaching at KS4 but will teach predominantly in KS2 and 3. The underpinning rationale of the pathway is to engage with issues that occur from the year 6-7 transfer and develop through experiencing best practice in both settings. 08 If you have any questions email: education@canterbury.ac.uk
09 The pathway works with a group of primary, secondary and special schools in order to bring a dedicated partnership approach to all aspects of the pathway from planning to joint teaching and learning experiences. Whilst in secondary settings you will have a specialist subject you will be expected to teach across the National Curriculum in primary. The pathway offers a wide range of experiences such as a devoted week to SEN with 3 days in a special school. From this pathway student teachers can gain employment across primary and secondary settings and are highly sought after with several students gaining interesting roles working across both a primary and secondary school. PGCE 11-18 Art and Design Biology Citizenship Chemistry Computer Science Design and Technology English Geography History Mathematics Modern Foreign Languages Music Physics Physics with Mathematics Physical Education Religious Education The 11-18 age range offers a fantastic opportunity to work with creative, vibrant and dynamic young people with a focus on teaching the subject you are passionate about. You will learn to teach your subject across the 11-18 age range whilst understanding how it fits within the wider curriculum. You should experience two contrasting secondary school placements which may include: Independent; Grammar; Foundation, Academy; and Secondary High Schools. On placement you will be supported by a Professional Mentor, Curriculum Mentor and University Tutor. You will develop a wide range of strategies to teach, support and develop learners from KS3 through to GCSE and A Level. Each specialism maximises your potential to become an imaginative and creative teacher who understands the wider importance of 11-18 education in society. There are unique features to each subject specialism and to read more about each please visit: www.canterbury.ac.uk/courses/prospectus/pgce/11-18.asp PGCE 11-18 INSPIRE Physics Chemistry Mathematics Physics with Mathematics in partnership with Imperial College London The INSPIRE pathway aims to enhance science teaching in schools by bringing those with significant research experience in physics, chemistry or engineering into schools in and around London. It is open to those with at least an MSc in one of those subjects and attracts an enhanced bursary. Based at Imperial College London, the INSPIRE programme builds on tailored versions of the Curriculum Studies and Professional Studies modules with a dedicated Enhanced Studies module, which draws on expertise from Imperial College and Canterbury Christ Church. The skills and understanding developed underpin four weeks of INSPIRE activities delivered by our students in partner schools, in addition to the teaching and workshops run in two placement schools. This is a challenging but highly rewarding route into teaching for those dedicated to enhancing education in the physical sciences and mathematics. Faculty of EDUCATION
