WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA We want you to enjoy your time in our country. We know that living in Australia will be different. Your host family will pick you up at the airport. They will also take you to collect your College uniform and open your personal bank account. The house in which you are going to live is a family home in which you are invited to live as a family member whilst you are studying in our College. It is the wish of your host family that you are comfortable and enjoy your stay. This is not a boarding house or hotel but a home, which means that there is some flexibility regarding individual student needs, providing there is agreement between the host parents, the student and the student's parents. Here are some guidelines to help you enjoy your time with your host family. Please read the following carefully and if you are happy with it, sign the agreement at the end. GENERAL RULES AND CONDITIONS 1. The student is expected to keep his or her own room clean and tidy. 2. The host parent will wash your clothing. It is the student's responsibility to place all clothes requiring washing in the basket provided before washing day. 3. Ironing and dry cleaning are the student's responsibility (exceptions may be made in discussion with host family). 4. Clean bed linen, towels and soap will be provided each week by the host parents, but the student will be expected to make their own bed. 5. Morning showers must be short, as others also need to use the bathroom. You may also shower in the evening. 6. No alcohol or drugs are permitted at any time. Smoking is not allowed in the house. 7. If a student wishes to invite a friend for a meal or longer period, this must be organised with the host family in advance. 8. Students are generally responsible for their own transport to and from school and outside school hours. However, the host family will assist whenever possible. 9. If a student wishes to go out in the evening or on the weekend, this must be in agreement with the host family. The host family must be informed of where the student is going, and return times agreed upon in accordance with the wishes of the student's parents. 10. If the student is sick and unable to attend school, the host parent must be informed and the College contacted. The host family will seek medical assistance as required. 11. Students will be expected to pay for STD and ISD calls (which are itemised on each telephone account). If a large number of local calls are made, the host family may make arrangements for the student to record these and pay for them. 12. If a student is responsible for any significant damage beyond normal wear and tear in the home (eg unremovable carpet stains etc) they will be expected to take responsibility for cost incurred (unless such damage is covered by the host family's insurance policy). 13. Students will not be permitted to sleep at another house unless the host family is certain that responsible adult supervision will be provided. 14. The student's breakfast, lunch and evening meal will be provided and also snack foods between meals (as required). (The host family will discuss meal times with you when you arrive, and also your likes and dislikes.) 15. If the student will not be at home for any meal, the host family must be notified in advance.
RULES AND CONDITIONS CONTINUED PAYMENT OF HOMESTAY MONEY 1. Payment is made in advance to the College and the College Business Manager will pay the host family monthly in advance. 2. If a student returns to their home country for the holidays during the school year (eg 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd term holiday breaks), half homestay money for those weeks must be paid in order to secure their room. Arrangements for holding a room during the long end of year holiday break are negotiated direct between parties. Any fee charged would be at a nominal rate. 3. If a student wishes to move from a homestay situation 4 weeks notice should be given. If notice given is less than 4 weeks, then 4 weeks homestay is payable from the end of the week of the date that notice is given. 4. Host parents cannot take responsibility for the student's personal property. (Therefore, we suggest that if you have valuable items it would be wise to take appropriate insurance.) 5. Homestay money does not include personal spending money, for example. entertainment, personal items, clothing. Therefore students should open a bank account in Australia into which their parents can deposit personal spending money. PLEASE NOTE 1. Families with whom students are placed, wish the student to become a part of their family. There will therefore be negotiation with the student to ensure the most satisfactory conditions for both parties. 2. Students are expected to give proper respect to the host family, to obey their guidelines and fit in with the family routine. They, in turn, will treat the student as they would treat their own child. This will produce harmony and a happy environment. 3. If a student continuously disregards the agreed expectations of the host family, the College may dismiss the student and return them to their home country and any homestay money prepaid (maximum 4 weeks) to the family will not be refunded. 4. If a student and host family are not compatible (not as a result of refusal to comply with rules) the College will attempt to find another family for the student. In this situation, host families will continue to host the student until another host family is found. 5. Students should always attempt to speak English when they and their friends are with the host family. This agreement is applicable when the homestay arrangement is managed and paid through Emmaus Christian College. When a homestay arrangement is made direct between the student/agent and a homestay family we suggest a homestay agreement contract is in place.
